Rangers' Jonah Heim: Sits with illness

Heim was unavailable for Tuesday's 12-inning loss to the Athletics due to an illness, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

Heim likely would have made an appearance off the bench Tuesday if available given the length of the contest, but he was off limits due to the ailment. It's unclear if the 27-year-old will be cleared to play in Wednesday's series finale.

  • Ryan Jeffers C | MIN

Twins' Ryan Jeffers: On bench Tuesday

Jeffers is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Brewers, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports.

Gary Sanchez will form a battery with starting pitcher Josh Winder while Jeffers gets a breather. Jeffers was behind the plate for three of the Twins' last four games and went 6-for-13 with two home runs, a double, five RBI and three runs over that stretch.

  • Elias Diaz C | TEX

Rockies' Elias Diaz: In timeshare with Serven

Diaz is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Padres, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.

Diaz and Brian Serven appear to have settled into a timeshare behind the plate. The two have alternated starts at catcher in every game over the past week, entering the lineup on four occasions apiece.

  • Guardians' Austin Hedges: Takes seat for Game 2

Hedges is out of the lineup for the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader with the White Sox.

He'll give way to Luke Maile behind the plate after going 1-for-3 with a run scored while catching all nine innings of Shane Bieber's complete game in the front end of the twin bill.

  • Phillies' Rafael Marchan: Called up Tuesday

Marchan was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old will join the big-league club for the two-game series in Toronto this week since starting catcher J.T. Realmuto is unable to enter Canada due to his vaccination status. Marchan has a .632 OPS in 20 big-league games this year and should fill a backup role behind Garrett Stubbs.

  • Phillies' J.T. Realmuto: Lands on restricted list

Realmuto (personal) was placed on the restricted list ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the Blue Jays.

Realmuto, Alec Bohm (finger), Aaron Nola and Kyle Gibson are all apparently unvaccinated, so they're unable to travel to Canada for the two-game series in Toronto this week. All four players should be reinstated to the active roster ahead of Friday's series opener against the Marlins. In the meantime, Garrett Stubbs should operate as the Phillies' primary catcher, while Rafael Marchan was promoted to handle backup duties.

  • Jason Delay C | BOS

Pirates' Jason Delay: Picks up another start vs. lefty

Delay will start at catcher and bat ninth in Tuesday's game against the Marlins.

Delay will be rewarded with his third start in a row behind the plate after he went 4-for-8 with a pair of doubles and a run scored between the previous two contests. All three of the righty-hitting Delay's starts have come against left-handed pitchers, so it's too early to conclude that he's usurped the lefty-hitting Michael Perez as the Pirates' preferred catcher.

  • Pirates' Michael Perez: On bench against lefty again

Perez is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Marlins.

The lefty-hitting Perez is on the bench for the third game in a row with the Pirates set to face yet another southpaw starter (Daniel Castano). Jason Delay will get another turn behind the plate at Perez's expense.

  • Tigers' Tucker Barnhart: Sitting Tuesday

Barnhart isn't in the lineup Tuesday at Kansas City.

The veteran has gone 4-for-18 with a pair of doubles and four walks since the start of July. Eric Haase will catch in Barnhart's place Tuesday.

  • Jonah Heim C | ATH

    Rangers' Jonah Heim: Sitting Tuesday

Heim is on the bench for Tuesday's game versus Oakland.

Heim went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs Monday and is now hitting .364 in 10 games this month. Sam Huff is catching Tuesday.
