  • Orioles' Adley Rutschman: Registers first steal

Rutschman went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Tuesday's 3-0 loss to the Nationals.

Rutschman had one of the Orioles' three hits in Tuesday's loss. He's gone 8-for-25 (.320) with four extra-base hits and four RBI over six games in May. Rutschman's steal was his first of the year -- speed is the one tool that doesn't show up much in his game. He's still putting together another excellent season with a .322/.359/.469 slash line, five home runs, 22 RBI and 20 runs scored over 34 contests, even with a walk rate at a career-low 5.3 percent.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Joins major-league roster

The Athletics recalled Soderstrom from Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday.

Soderstrom has slashed .245/.353/.529 with seven home runs over 27 games at Las Vegas this season. The 22-year-old managed just a .472 OPS and 31.2 percent strikeout rate with the Athletics in 2023. Soderstrom will give Oakland a third catcher, and he could also see some action at first base and/or designated hitter.

  • Ivan Herrera C | STL

Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Set for primary catching role

Herrera will serve as the Cardinals' designated hitter and cleanup batter in Wednesday's game against the Mets.

Though he'll be included in the lineup in a non-defensive role Wednesday, Herrera is expected to serve as the Cardinals' primary backstop for the foreseeable future after Willson Contreras was placed on the 10-day injured list with a fractured forearm, an injury that will likely keep him out for 6-to-8 weeks. Pedro Pages was called up from Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move and will start behind the plate Wednesday, but Herrera should see the bulk of the work at catcher while Contreras is on the shelf. Herrera has logged 76 plate appearances so far this season, hitting .232 with three home runs, 11 RBI and seven runs.

  • Tomas Nido C | DET

Mets' Tomas Nido: Retreating to bench Wednesday

Nido is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Nido will get a breather for the day game after he started behind the dish in both of the first two contests of the series. Omar Narvaez will form a battery with starting pitcher Jose Quintana on Wednesday.

  • Will Smith C | LAD

Dodgers' Will Smith: Not in Wednesday's lineup

Smith is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins.

The Dodgers are playing a day game after a night game, so it makes sense for manager Dave Roberts to give Smith the afternoon off to rest his legs. Austin Barnes will handle the catching duties Wednesday as the Dodgers go for the series sweep.

  • Kyle McCann C | COL

Athletics' Kyle McCann: Impressive pop in Tuesday's loss

McCann went 2-for-4 with a double, a solo home run, a walk and two additional runs in a loss to the Rangers on Tuesday.

The reserve backstop continues to parlay his occasional opportunities into standout offensive production, with Tuesday's impressive day pushing his average and OPS to .393 and 1.235, respectively, across 33 plate appearances. While the small-sample caveat certainly applies, it's difficult to dismiss how quickly McCann seems to have acclimated to big-league arms after displaying impressive bat skills at both the Double-A and Triple-A levels the last two seasons. Shea Langeliers remains the top backstop at the moment and certainly has the edge in terms of knowledge of the pitching staff, but given the expansive gulf in offensive performance between the two thus far, it's conceivable McCann could progressively carve out more consistent opportunities.

  • Jason Delay C | BOS

Pirates' Jason Delay: Catches bullpen session

Delay (knee) caught a bullpen session Wednesday, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

It would appear to be the first time he's done so since undergoing surgery in mid-April to repair the meniscus in his right knee. Delay is expected to miss most, if not all, of the rest of the first half as he recovers.

  • Pedro Pages C | STL

Cardinals' Pedro Pages: Recalled and in Wednesday's lineup

The Cardinals recalled Pages from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday.

Pages will make his first major-league start Wednesday versus the Mets, serving as the Cardinals' catcher while batting eighth. He will serve primarily as Ivan Herrera's backup over the next several weeks after Willson Contreras (forearm) was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Sent to IL with forearm fracture

The Cardinals placed Contreras on the 10-day injured list Wednesday.

Contreras fractured his left forearm when he was struck by J.D. Martinez's bat on a catcher's interference call during Tuesday's 7-5 loss. He will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair the fracture and is expected to miss 6-to-8 weeks. Ivan Herrera will be the Cardinals' primary catcher while Contreras is out, while Pedro Pages has been recalled from Triple-A Memphis to take Contreras' roster spot and serve as the team's No. 2 backstop.

  • Royals' Salvador Perez: Getting breather Wednesday

Perez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Brewers.

Perez will receive a rare breather during the afternoon game. Freddy Fermin will fill in at catcher while Perez gets some rest.
