  • Padres' Brett Sullivan: Back in majors

The Padres recalled Sullivan from Triple-A El Paso on Friday.

After being optioned to Triple-A on Aug. 2, Sullivan will return to the majors as extra catcher depth behind Gary Sanchez and Luis Campusano. Sullivan has slashed just .170/.184/.298 in 49 major-league plate appearances and is unlikely to see consistent playing time.

  • Gary Sanchez C | MIL

Padres' Gary Sanchez: Takes seat Friday

Sanchez is not in the lineup Friday versus the Giants.

Luis Campusano will start at catcher while Manny Machado takes a turn as the Padres' designated hitter and Matthew Batten covers third base. Sanchez is sitting on a four-game hitting streak and has tallied 18 homers and 44 RBI in 68 games for San Diego.

  • Sean Murphy C | ATL

Braves' Sean Murphy: Gets breather Friday

Murphy is not in the lineup Friday against the Dodgers.

Travis d'Arnaud will do the catching for Atlanta and bat sixth. Murphy has been getting more rest in recent weeks as the runaway NL East leaders look ahead to October.

  • Ryan Jeffers C | MIN

Twins' Ryan Jeffers: Heads to bench Friday

Jeffers is not in the starting lineup Friday versus the Rangers.

Jeffers will get a breather after he went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts Wednesday versus the Guardians. Christian Vazquez will start behind the plate and bat eighth in the opener with Texas.

  • Reds' Tyler Stephenson: Breather in second game

Stephenson is not in the starting lineup for the second game of Friday's doubleheader with the Cubs.

Stephenson will head to the bench after he went 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout in the team's 6-2 loss to Chicago in the matinee. Luke Maile will start behind the plate and bat ninth in the nightcap.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Recalled from Las Vegas

Oakland recalled Soderstrom from Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday.

Soderstrom gives the Athletics a third option at catcher as they expand their roster from 26 to 28. The 24-year-old entered the 2023 campaign as a consensus top-100 prospect but has slashed just .165/.237/.247 through his first 27 major-league games.

  • Royals' Salvador Perez: Returns to lineup Friday

Perez (back/neck) is starting at first base and batting third Friday versus the Red Sox.

Perez was held out of Wednesday's series finale against the Pirates due to back/neck tightness, but he'll return to action heading into the Royals' three-game weekend series versus Boston, although he'll get a lighter defensive assignment. Freddy Fermin is catching Friday and Nick Loftin will make his MLB debut as the Royals' designated hitter.

  • Sam Huff C | BAL

Rangers' Sam Huff: Recalled from Triple-A

Texas recalled Huff from Triple-A Round Rock on Friday.

Huff will give the Rangers a fourth option at catcher as rosters expand from 26 to 28. The 25-year-old former top prospect has slashed .237/.275/.368 in 40 plate appearances this season at the major-league level.

  • David Fry RF | CLE

Guardians' David Fry: Activated from 10-day IL

Cleveland activated Fry (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list Friday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.

Fry is not in the starting lineup for Friday night's series opener against the Rays, but he'll be available off the Guardians' bench following a four-week absence to heal a left hamstring strain. The 27-year-old has slashed .250/.308/.429 with four homers and two steals across his first 42 major-league games this season.

  • Austin Wells C | NYY

Yankees' Austin Wells: Called up to big leagues

The Yankees selected Wells' contract from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday.

Wells slashed .243/.335/.446 with 16 home runs and seven stolen bases between Double-A Somerset and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season, which included an .841 OPS with five homers in August for S/WB. Questions remains as to whether the 2020 first-round pick is a viable catcher defensively in the long run, but he has plenty of potential with the bat and the Yankees should give him a long look over the final month.
