Peters won't start Friday's game at Cleveland but will follow an opener, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Peters was expected to work as a traditional starter Friday, but he'll instead work behind opener Taylor Cole. Peters has a 3.06 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 14:7 K:BB through 17.2 innings this season.

Maton was called up from Triple-A Columbus on Friday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.

Maton was acquired by the Indians from the Padres in mid-July and is set to make his big-league debut with his new organization. The 26-year-old had a 7.77 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 20:6 K:BB over 24.1 innings with the Friars prior to the trade.

Mengden was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday.

Mengden is the odd man out with the Athletics adding Tanner Roark at the deadline. He wasn't terrible during his time on the roster, but his 4.85 ERA and 16.8 percent strikeout rate in 55.2 innings were each far from impressive. He remains one of the top options to return to the rotation if a gap opens up.

Peters is scheduled to start Friday's game against the Indians.

Peters re-entered the rotation last weekend for a home start versus Baltimore but didn't impress, working only four innings and giving up five runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks. Despite the underwhelming outing, Peters will get another chance to start with the Angels still requiring a replacement in the rotation for the injured Andrew Heaney (shoulder).

Rogers struck out the side during the ninth but allowed the Marlins to tie the game and force extra innings during a loss Tuesday.

Rogers entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs while the Twins were clinging to a two-run lead and allowed two inherited runners to score on a single, but then he struck out the side while mixing in an intentional walk against the next four batters. All of his numbers improved except his WHIP, but Rogers now has six blown saves versus 16 saves this season. He also owns a 2.15 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 65 strikeouts in 50.1 innings.

Hendriks picked up the save against the Brewers on Thursday, tossing a scoreless ninth inning without allowing a baserunner to close out a 5-3 win for the Athletics. He struck out two.

The All-Star had blown saves in three of his last four appearances, but he was able to bounce back with a clean effort in this contest and pick up his 10th save of the season in 14 opportunities. He seems to have kept his grasp on the closer role for the time being, but he could start to cede opportunities to Blake Treinen if he hits another prolonged rough patch.

Thornton (4-7) earned the win over Baltimore on Thursday, hurling six innings and allowing one run on five hits and no walks while striking out two.

Thornton was coming off a 10-day stint on the injured list with right elbow inflammation but showed no signs of injury or rust, limiting the Orioles to six baserunners on five singles and a hit batsman while tossing 58 of 87 pitches for strikes. He was successful despite missing few bats, as he whiffed only two hitters and induced a mere six swinging strikes. The victory comes on the heels of a pair of rough post-break outings in which the rookie surrendered nine earned runs in 4.1 combined innings. Thornton now carries a 4-7 record along with a 5.23 ERA and 102:45 K:BB over 105 innings and is next scheduled for a road start against the Rays on Tuesday.

Abreu was optioned to Double-A Corpus Christi on Thursday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Abreu returns to the minors just one day after tossing a scoreless inning in his major-league debut Wednesday. The 22-year-old carries an ERA of 4.86 with a 92:38 K:BB in stops between High-A and Double-A this season. Zack Greinke, Aaron Sanchez and Joe Biagini were added to the major-league roster in a corresponding move.

Giles (elbow) played catch Thursday, Mike Wilner of Sportsnet 590 The Fan reports.

Manager Charlie Montoyo said Giles felt great in what was his first throwing session since receiving a cortisone shot in his elbow earlier in the week. The skipper noted Giles could return to action Sunday or Monday if all goes as planned over the next couple of days.

Adam had his contract selected from Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday.

Adam will provide the Blue Jays with bullpen insurance after the team traded away a pair of relievers in Daniel Hudson and Joe Biagini on Wednesday. The righty has made eight appearances with Buffalo since July 11, posting a 3.60 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB in 10 innings during that stretch.
