  • Jeanmar Gomez RP | CHW

White Sox's Jeanmar Gomez: Contract purchased from minors

Gomez had his contract selected from Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday.

In a corresponding move, Bruce Rondon was designated for assignment. Across 30 appearances with Charlotte this year, Gomez has logged a 2.03 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with a 35:13 K:BB in 40 innings of relief. He will likely be deployed as a middle-inning reliever during his time with the team.

  • Alan Busenitz RP | CIN

Twins' Alan Busenitz: Recalled from minors

Busenitz was called up from Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday, Brandon Warne of Zone Coverage reports.

Busenitz was promoted back to the big leagues with Addison Reed (triceps) placed on the disabled list. Across just six appearances with the Twins this year, Busenitz has allowed five earned runs on 13 hits in just seven innings of relief. Look for him to serve in low-leverage situations while with the team.

  • Jason Adam RP | SD

Royals' Jason Adam: Recalled from Omaha

Adam was called back up from Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday.

Just a day after being optioned to the minors, Adam will rejoin the big-league club as Ian Kennedy (oblique) was placed back on the 10-day DL. Adam has appeared in 18 games for the Royals in 2018, posting a 4.66 ERA and 1.34 WHIP with a 20:9 K:BB across 19.1 innings of relief.

  • Ryan Yarbrough RP | NYY

Rays' Ryan Yarbrough: Could be primary reliever Wednesday

Yarbrough seems likely to serve as the Rays' primary reliever Wednesday against the Tigers once Tampa Bay's opening pitcher, Hunter Wood, departs from the contest.

With none of three full-time members of the Tampa Bay rotation (Blake Snell, Chris Archer and Nathan Eovaldi) available to start on normal rest, the Rays will use an "opener" for the second straight day. It was expected that Yarbrough would be in line for extended work behind Ryne Stanek on Tuesday, but the Rays instead used a combination of four relievers to cover the final seven innings following Stanek's exit. Since he hasn't pitched since June 6, Yarbrough is more well rested than any arm in the bullpen, so he should be ready for an ample workload Wednesday once manager Kevin Cash pulls the plug on Wood. Wood hasn't worked more than three innings in any of his appearances in the majors or minors this season, so that likely represents his limit in his first MLB start.

  • Rays' Andrew Kittredge: Returns from minors

The Rays recalled Kittredge from Triple-A Durham on Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Two days after being optioned to the minors, Kittredge will rejoin the Rays with the team in need of a reliever following Jose Alvarado's placement on the family medical emergency list. Kittredge has made 14 appearances with the Rays this season, accruing an 8.68 ERA and 1.93 WHIP across 18.2 innings.

  • Jose Alvarado RP | PHI

Rays' Jose Alvarado: Out through break for family reasons

Alvarado was placed on the family medical emergency list Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Per Topkin, Alvarado won't rejoin the Rays until after the All-Star break.

The Rays recalled Andrew Kittredge from Triple-A Durham to fortify the bullpen while Alvarado is away from the team for the next five games. The temporary departure of Alvarado, who picked up the win while working two scoreless innings Tuesday against the Tigers, should clear the way for Sergio Romo to pick up any save chances that may be available through the weekend.

  • Brian Johnson RP | BOS

Red Sox's Brian Johnson: Bullpen scheduled Wednesday

Johnson (hip) participated in pitcher's fielding practice Tuesday ahead of a scheduled bullpen session Wednesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Johnson landed on the 10-day disabled list over the weekend, but the transaction is retroactive to July 5, so he could return before the All-Star break. If he comes out of Wednesday's session without incident, he's the likely starter for Sunday against the Blue Jays.

  • Ryne Stanek RP | STL

Rays' Ryne Stanek: Two scoreless innings as opener

Stanek allowed one hit while striking out two with no walks across two scoreless innings as the opener Tuesday against Detroit.

Stanek threw 16 of 23 pitches for strikes as he retired six of seven batters faced in this strong showing. While he's been effective in small doses, Stanek seems likely to see a strict workload cap for the time being, and his unconventional role doesn't endow him with much fantasy appeal.

  • Joe Palumbo RP | TEX

Rangers' Joe Palumbo: Moves rehab to Down East

Palumbo (elbow) has been assigned to High-A Down East to continue his rehabilitation assignment, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.

Palumbo began his rehab assignment with three starts for the Rangers' entry in the Arizona Rookie League and will make his first start for Down East on Friday. It was at Down East in 2017 where he tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow.

  • Ken Giles RP | ATL

Astros' Ken Giles: Part of ninth-inning meltdown

Giles allowed three runs on three hits without getting an out in Tuesday's 6-5 extra-inning win over Oakland.

Giles was handed a 4-0 lead when he came on to pitch the ninth inning, but allowed three consecutive singles and was yanked for Hector Rondon, who was unable to squelch the Athletics' brewing rally. This was not a save situation for Giles, so he still remains without a blown save this season, but it was an ugly outing that should leave a bad taste. Over 86 batters faced in plate appearances during non-save situations, Giles has allowed 17 earned runs and 29 hits.
