  • Michael Tonkin RP | MIN

Twins' Michael Tonkin: Contract selected by Twins

Tonkin had his contract selected by the Twins on Tuesday.

Tonkin will rejoin the big club after being designated for assignment by the Twins back in May. He posted an impressive 1.73 ERA and 61:13 K:BB through 41.2 innings with Triple-A Rochester, but his 6.55 ERA across 11 big-league innings this season will likely limit his opportunities to lower-leveraging situations. J.T. Chargois (elbow) was shifted to the 60-day disabled list to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for Tonkin.

  • Blake Treinen RP | LAD

Athletics' Blake Treinen: Takes second straight loss Monday

Treinen (1-3) took the loss in Monday's 11-9 extra-inning defeat at the hands of the Angels, allowing two earned runs on a hit and a walk over two innings. He also recorded three strikeouts.

Treinen certainly had his moments over his pair of frames, but the two-run triple he surrendered to Kole Calhoun in the 11th inning was the difference in the contest. The 29-year-old right-hander has now taken losses in each of his last two trips to the mound, but he's been an asset since arriving in Oakland. Despite the recent stumbles, he boasts a 2.36 ERA, four holds and seven saves over 22 appearances, along with a 29:8 K:BB.

  • Ryan Garton RP | SEA

Mariners' Ryan Garton: Perfect one-inning stint in loss

Garton fired a clean ninth inning in Monday's 6-2 loss to the Astros.

Garton needed just nine pitches to dispose of the potent trio of Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa and Josh Reddick. The 27-year-old right-hander has put together two perfect appearances with the Mariners thus far after a rough pair of stints with the Rays before being traded on Aug. 6. He'll serve as another bullpen option for manager Scott Servais for the balance of the regular season.

  • Royals' Scott Alexander: Picks up one-out save

Alexander picked up a one-out save Monday against the Tigers, his third of the season.

Alexander cleaned things up for Brandon Maurer, who handed him the ball with the tying run at second base in a one-run game. The 32-year-old reliever needed just four pitches to end the contest, inducing a game-ending groundout from the only batter he faced (Mikie Mahtook). This marked Alexander's second save in the past four games, and it appears he could be in line for more opportunities with Kelvin Herrera (forearm) and Joakim Soria (oblique) both on the shelf with injuries. He has posted a 2.18 ERA and 49:22 K:BB in 57.2 innings out of the bullpen this season.

  • Jakob Junis RP | TEX

Royals' Jake Junis: Collects fifth straight win

Junis (7-2) collected the win after allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out three across five innings Monday against the Tigers.

Junis has now allowed three or fewer earned runs in all five of his starts since rejoining the rotation at the beginning of August, a stretch over which he's picked up four wins and owns a healthy 2.40 ERA and 27:1 K:BB. Despite his recent success in the rotation, Junis remains on a pitch limit; he's failed to complete six innings or toss 80 pitches in each of his previous three outings. The 24-year-old will look to keep things up in his next scheduled start, which is set for Saturday against the Twins.

  • Zac Curtis RP | PHI

Mariners' Zac Curtis: Cast off 40-man

Curtis was designated for assignment by the Mariners on Monday.

Curtis was cut loose to clear room on the roster for Jacob Hannemann and Seth Frankoff, who were both claimed off waivers from the Cubs. The 25-year-old appeared in three games for the big club this season, allowing three unearned while striking out two in 4.2 innings of work. While he doesn't have much major-league experience, he compiled a respectable 3.51 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 51.1 innings for Double-A Arkansas this season, so it's possible he'll draw some interest on waivers.

  • Carson Smith RP | BOS

Red Sox's Carson Smith: May not be activated Monday

Smith (elbow) may not be activated from the 60-day disabled list Monday after he was struck by a line drive in the leg during his final rehab outing with Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday, Christopher Smith of The Boston Globe reports.

Since Smith was still able to walk off the field under his power upon departing Sunday, it doesn't sound like he's dealing with a significant setback, but it could nonetheless delay his season debut with the Red Sox. The right-hander, who was limited to just three appearances with the big club in 2016 before requiring Tommy John surgery, isn't expected to be deployed in a high-leverage role once he rejoins Boston after he struggled to regain velocity in his rehab outings. With a full offseason to build his arm back up, the Red Sox believe that Smith can carve out of a more substantial role in the bullpen in 2018.

  • Rangers' Nick Martinez: Available out of bullpen

Rangers manager Jeff Banister said that Martinez was available out of the bullpen for Sunday's game against the Angels, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports.

Though Martinez ended up going unused Sunday, it's expected that barring injury, he'll remain in a relief role for the rest of the season after the team acquired Miguel Gonzalez from the White Sox last week to fill out the rotation. Much like Austin Bibens-Dirkx, Martinez will likely serve as a long man in the bullpen, mopping up during blowout contests or covering multiple innings when any of the team's rotation members turn in abbreviated starts.

  • Ryan Borucki RP | SF

Blue Jays' Ryan Borucki: Shines in Triple-A debut

Borucki pitched six scoreless innings, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out six during his Triple-A debut with Buffalo on Thursday.

The 23-year-old lefty has been impressive this season, moving through three levels of the organization. Between High-A Dunedin and Double-A New Hampshire, he's managed quality starts in 20 of his 25 outings. Borucki remains a year or two away from a possible big-league role, but his stock has risen immensely in 2017, and he'll certainly be a player to watch when next spring rolls around.

  • Emilio Pagan RP | CIN

Mariners' Emilio Pagan: Grabs fifth hold in win

Pagan was credited with his fifth hold in Sunday's 10-2 win over the Athletics, allowing an earned run on two hits over an inning-plus. He also recorded a strikeout.

Pagan has been a bit more hittable as of late, as he's now allowed an earned run in three straight games and five out of the last six overall. He continues to see plenty of work, however, as manager Scott Servais appears to value his ability to eat up multiple innings. Pagan also offers solid strikeout upside, as evidenced by his 43:7 K:BB over 41 frames.
