Tigers' Michael Fulmer: Will get skipped or pushed back to protect innings

Fulmer will receive additional rest between starts and may have starts skipped as his innings continue to mount, reports the Detroit Free Press. So far, he has thrown 135.1 innings between Triple-A and the major leagues.

Earlier in the season, the team mentioned a 20-to-30 percent increase in innings over last year (124.2) was the target, so that would have capped him at about 170 innings. Now, Tigers' manager Brad Ausmus said, "We don't really have a hard cap" on innings for the big starter, but added, "We're going to have to do something, push him back, skip him or something. If he keeps pitching like this, we might have to do it more than once because we'd like to have him all the way through." Fulmer has been a key contributor to the Tigers' success this season, as well as to that of many fantasy owners. News of skipped starts or pushed back days will wreck havoc for head-to-head owners who are nearing postseason play. Weekly lineup cutoffs for fantasy owners might be a roll of the dice with such a fluid situation in Detroit.

  • Edwin Diaz RP | LAD

Mariners' Edwin Diaz: Picks up seventh save against Angels

Diaz tossed a perfect ninth for his seventh save Monday against the Angels.

Diaz has allowed just one run in eight innings and is now a perfect 7-for-7 in save opportunities. He struck out another batter Monday night to raise his total to 11 against just one walk since taking over as closer. Diaz and his blazing 97.1 mph average fastball look perfectly capable of handling the closer's role so far.

  • Tony Zych RP | NYY

Mariners' Tony Zych: Pitches one inning at Double-A Jackson

Zych (shoulder) struck out two and walked one during Monday's one-inning rehab appearance with Double-A Jackson.

Zych likely needs a couple more solid outings like this one before a return to the Mariners becomes a real possibility. The 26-year-old made just 10 MLB outings prior to landing on the DL with shoulder tendinitis back in early May.

  • Daniel Norris RP | CLE

Tigers' Daniel Norris: Suffers first loss Monday

Norris (1-1) gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits and four walks over 5.1 innings while striking out just one in Monday's loss to the Royals.

Norris managed to limit the damage considering the large number of baserunners he allowed, but a 4:6 K:BB ratio in two starts since being recalled from Triple-A Toledo doesn't bode well for his chances of maintaining a luck-fueled 3.47 ERA. The southpaw is a risky play against a dangerous Red Sox offense next time out.

  • Yankees' Dellin Betances: Earns fifth save of season

Betances earned his fifth save of the season on Monday, allowing a hit and a run in his scoreless ninth against the Blue Jays.

Betances is five-for-five in save opportunities since the All-Star break, but has been living dangerously. The righty has allowed eight baserunners in seven innings this month, though his 13 strikeouts help to keep those runners from scoring. Betances now has a 2.20 ERA and 1.01 WHIP for the season.

  • Chad Green RP | TOR

Yankees' Chad Green: Dominates in return to Yankees

Green (2-2) earned the win in his return to the Major Leagues on Monday, shutting out the Blue Jays over six innings. He allowed just two hits, didn't walk anyone, and struck out 11.

Green was recalled earlier on Monday to take the rotation spot of Luis Severino and has seemingly done enough to warrant keeping the job for now. The 25-year-old had a sterling 1.52 ERA in Triple-A, but it hadn't translated to the majors until Monday night. Green will now carry a 4.05 ERA and 1.26 WHIP into his start Sunday against the Angels.

  • Justin Wilson RP | BOS

Tigers' Justin Wilson: Receives cortisone injection

Wilson received a cortisone injection in his elbow before Monday's game, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.

Manager Brad Ausmus confirmed that the injection was in response to a nerve issue and that Wilson would still be available if needed. The left-hander leads the Detroit bullpen with 48 appearances this season, but has allowed six earned runs over his last 2.1 innings.

  • Liam Hendriks RP | CHC

Athletics' Liam Hendriks: Awesome since return from DL

Hendricks has allowed six earned runs in 28.1 innings of work (1.91 ERA) since returning from the disabled list June 19.

Before his DL stint due to an elbow injury, Hendricks owned an 8.27 ERA and 1.77 WHIP. The injury must have been hampering him badly because he has since overwhelmed hitters with a 0.92 WHIP to go along with a 26:6 K:BB.

  • Michael Tonkin RP | MIN

Twins' Michael Tonkin: Downhill period of rollercoaster year

Tonkin has allowed seven earned runs -- including three homers -- over his last 10 appearances, spanning 14.1 innings.

The 26-year-old has been inconsistent this year, posting a 0.88 WHIP in July, but a 1.61 mark in May and 2.14 so far in August. He also hasn't gotten the opportunity to pitch in close games, earning just two holds in three chances this year.

  • Drew Pomeranz RP | CHC

Red Sox's Drew Pomeranz: Wins first game with Sox

Pomeranz (1-2) earned the win Monday afternoon by holding the Indians to two runs over 7.2 innings. He allowed five hits, walked two and struck out six.

On the whole, Pomeranz hasn't been as dominant with the Red Sox as he was with the Padres, but has gotten on track this month. In three August starts, Pomeranz has allowed a total of five earned runs, although his nine walks are already more than he surrendered in all of July. He'll make his next start Saturday against Detroit.
