Jesse Chavez RP | ATL
Athletics' Jesse Chavez surrenders four runs in loss Thursday
Athletics pitcher Jesse Chavez took the loss Thursday, giving up four earned runs on seven hits and three walks in five innings while striking out five in his team's 6-5 loss to the Angels.
Chavez (0-2) issued three walks for his second straight start since joining the rotation, and unlike his previous one-hit outing, the Angels were able to knock him around. The starter gave up just one run through four innings before things came apart in the fifth, loading the bases with one out before surrendering a two-run single and another run on a fielder's choice in his final inning of work.
Chavez owns a 2.55 ERA and 18:7 K:BB ratio in 17 2/3 innings. His next start is scheduled for Tuesday against the Twins in Minnesota.

Fernando Rodney RP | ARI
Busy Mariners closer Fernando Rodney to rest Thursday
Lloyd McClendon seemed to be stating the obvious when he told the Tacoma News Tribune it's "highly unlikely" that Mariners closer Fernando Rodney will make it to the mound Thursday in Houston. After all, Rodney has pitched four straight days.
Rodney has been lights-out after a brutal start to the season. He has not given up a run in his last seven appearances, notching five saves in the process. The result is an ERA that has shrunk from 16.20 to 5.23.

Twins place Casey Fien on DL, promote Michael Tonkin
The hope of the Twins that key reliever Casey Fien could avoid a stint on the disabled list has been dashed, FoxSportsNorth is reporting. The right-hander has been placed on the 15-day DL with a shoulder injury sustained during his ninth-inning appearance Wednesday against Detroit.
Fien has had two poor performances since his three scoreless, hitless appearances to start the season. His ERA catapulted from 1.93 to 4.35 when he allowed three runs on five hits to the Tigers.
His replacement is fellow righty Michael Tonkin, who has been promoted from Triple-A Rochester. Tonkin pitched in 25 games for Minnesota a year ago and had yielded just two earned runs with 10 strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level in 2015.

Yankees' Dellin Betances (toe) not expected to miss time
Yankees manager Joe Girardi indicated Wednesday that pitcher Dellin Betances is dealing with a blister on his big toe, the New York Daily News reports.
"It's not an issue," Girardi said, adding that Betances isn't expected to miss any time with the injury.
Betances pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning Wednesday, striking out two in his team's 3-2, 13-inning loss to the Rays. He's yet to allow an earned run this season while racking up 19 strikeouts and seven walks in 12 1/3 innings. The righty has walked just one batter in his last eight appearances.

Tommy Layne RP | STL
Red Sox promote two, demote two in Wednesday moves
John Farrell announced Wednesday that the Red Sox have made a slew of moves, including the demotion of outfielder Jackie Bradley back to Triple-A Pawtucket a day after he had been brought up.
Farrell also told WEEI that Anthony Varvaro has been designated for assignment and that fellow right-handers Dalier Hinojosa and Tommy Layne have been recalled from the minors.
Bradley is still trying to display his potential at the big-league level after batting .198 in 384 at-bats with Boston a year ago. Varvaro punched his ticket back by giving up four runs on eight hits in his last 3 1/3 innings pitched.

Ryan Webb RP | SF
RHP Ryan Webb up, OF Jerry Sands down for Indians
The Indians have announced the promotion of veteran right-hander Ryan Webb in an attempt to bolster their battered bullpen. Outfielder Jerry Sands has been designated for assignment to create a roster space.
"We just got to the point because of some early exits (by our starters) and some inconsistencies in our bullpen that we felt we needed another arm," manager Terry Francona said, per the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "We did not want to designate Jerry. He kind of grew on everybody. But the fact of the matter is we needed the arm and Swish (Nick Swisher) is on the horizon. I'm not talking about tomorrow, but sometime we need to look at the big picture when it comes to making decisions and we did. It was not a lot of fun telling Jerry that because he's such a good kid."
The 29-year-old journeyman pitcher has been impressive at Triple-A Columbus with one run and four hits allowed in 8 1/3 innings.
The latest disaster by the Indians bullpen was Tuesday night when it gave up eight runs from the sixth inning on to blow a 5-3 lead.

Rays place RP Kirby Yates on major-league DL
The Rays placed reliever Kirby Yates on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday due to a right pectoral strain. Yates apparently suffered the injury before being demoted to the minors April 14.
Yates made three appearances for Triple-A Durham following his demotion. He went 0-1 with a 10.13 ERA over those three outings. However, his first two appearances were scoreless outings before allowing three runs in two-thirds innings Sunday.
