  • Connor Brogdon RP | CLE

Angels' Connor Brogdon: Selected to MLB bullpen

The Angels selected Brogdon's contract from Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday.

With Andrew Chafin (triceps) headed for the injured list, Brogdon will rejoin the big club after being designated for assignment in mid-August. The 30-year-old righty has given up three earned runs in 7.1 innings since being sent to Salt Lake and is likely ticketed for low-leverage work with the Angels.

  • Andrew Chafin RP | MIN

Angels' Andrew Chafin: Placed on injured list

The Angels placed Chafin on the 15-day injured list Friday, retroactive to Thursday, with left triceps inflammation.

Chafin has been effective out of the bullpen since joining the Angels at the trade deadline, posting a 1.98 ERA and 1.17 WHIP alongside an 18:7 K:BB over 13.2 innings. However, he'll now be unavailable for the next two weeks after coming away from his latest appearance with a triceps issue, leaving just enough time for him to potentially come back for the final weekend of the regular season. Connor Brogdon was selected from Triple-A Salt Lake to fill the opening in the Halos' bullpen.

  • Jose Castillo RP | BAL

Mariners' Jose Castillo: Designated for assignment

The Mariners designated Castillo for assignment Friday.

Castillo's run with the Mariners will end after just nine days, during which he gave up one unearned run in three innings across three appearances. Casey Legumina will come up from Triple-A Tacoma to fill the vacancy in Seattle's bullpen.

  • Casey Legumina RP | SEA

Mariners' Casey Legumina: Back with Seattle

The Mariners recalled Legumina from Triple-A Tacoma on Friday.

Legumina has fired 5.2 shutout innings while striking out eight batters since being sent down to Triple-A in mid-August. He'll now return to Seattle to take on a middle-relief role and replace Jose Castillo, who was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

  • Josh Hader RP | HOU

Astros' Josh Hader: Yet to resume throwing

Hader (shoulder) has yet to resume throwing, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Hader has yet to resume throwing since being shut down Aug. 15 due to a left shoulder capsule injury. The 31-year-old previously indicated that he'd need roughly three weeks to ramp up once cleared to throw. It's unclear when he'll start throwing at this point, but his postseason availability will be threatened if he doesn't begin soon.

  • Tigers' Sawyer Gipson-Long: Placed on injured list

The Tigers placed Gipson-Long on the 15-day injured list Friday against Miami due to neck stiffness.

Gipson-Long gave up seven runs in 2.1 innings in a start Thursday, and he'll now head to the injured list. Gipson-Long will be eligible for reinstatement Sept. 27, one day before the Tigers' final regular-season contest. Detroit activated Jose Urquidy (elbow) from the injured list in a corresponding move, but it's unclear who'll take Gipson-Long's spot in the rotation.

  • Beau Brieske RP | DET

Tigers' Beau Brieske: Recalled, placed on 60-day IL

The Tigers recalled Brieske (forearm) from Triple-A Toledo on Friday and placed him on the 60-day injured list.

Brieske has already been ruled out for the remainder of the 2025 campaign due to a right forearm strain, so the Tigers will perform a bit of roster manipulation that will allow the team to give the 27-year-old's 40-man spot to the newly activated Jose Urquidy (elbow). Sawyer Gipson-Long (neck) was also placed on the 15-day IL as part of Friday's roster moves.

  • Jose Urquidy SP | PIT

Tigers' Jose Urquidy: Returns from injured list

The Astros reinstated Urquidy (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Friday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

Urquidy has spent the entire season working his way back from a Tommy John procedure he underwent last June. The 30-year-old righty began a rehab assignment in early August and has since turned in a 3.20 ERA and 0.86 WHIP across 19.2 innings between Single-A Lakeland and Triple-A Toledo. Now cleared to pitch in the majors for the first time since 2023, he will presumably work out of the bullpen for the final few weeks of the regular season and aim to return to the starting rotation in 2026. Sawyer Gipson-Long (neck) was placed on the 15-day IL to make room for Urquidy on the active roster, and Beau Brieske (forearm) landed on the 60-day IL to free up a spot on the 40-man roster.

  • Jordan Hicks RP | CHW

Red Sox's Jordan Hicks: Could return later this month

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Friday that Hicks (shoulder) could return before the end of the season, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Hicks landed on the 15-day injured list one week ago with right shoulder tendinitis. It's unclear whether he has resumed a throwing program, but it seems he's progressed enough in his recovery that his manager believes Hicks can rejoin the bullpen later this month. Hicks holds an 8.20 ERA and 15:12 K:BB over 18.2 innings during his time with the Red Sox.

  • Justin Topa RP | MIN

Twins' Justin Topa: On IL with oblique injury

The Twins placed Topa on the 15-day injured list Friday due to a left oblique strain.

Topa was removed from Sunday's game with left knee discomfort, but he'll head to the injured list Friday with a different ailment. The 34-year-old has been serving as a high-leverage arm since Jhoan Duran was dealt to the Phillies. He's blown two of his six save chances during that stretch and has allowed seven runs (six earned) across his last nine appearances. Cody Laweryson was brought up from Triple-A St. Paul in a corresponding move. Cole Sands, Kody Funderburk and Michael Tonkin are candidates for save chances.
