Mariners' Cody Bolton: Returns to action Friday

Bolton (ankle) struck out one over a perfect inning of relief Friday in the Mariners' 9-5 loss to the Cubs in Cactus League play.

Bolton's appearance was his third of the spring but his first since Feb. 29 after a bout with ankle discomfort prompted the Mariners to hold him out for a few days. The 25-year-old looks like he'll be ready to go for the start of the regular season, but it's unclear if he has the inside track for a spot in Seattle's bullpen. He still has two minor-league options remaining and was hit hard in his first taste of the big leagues with Pittsburgh in 2023, logging a 6.33 ERA and 2.11 WHIP over 21.1 innings.

  • Mariners' Joey Krehbiel: Back in action at spring training

Krehbiel (neck) gave up three earned runs on two hits and one walk while striking out one over an inning of relief in Friday's 9-5 loss to the Cubs in Cactus League play.

Krehbiel had been scheduled to make his third appearance of the spring Wednesday versus the Royals, but he was scratched from that outing two days later due to a neck strain. The veteran reliever was quickly able to move past the issue, but he was hit hard in his return to the mound Friday, with both of the hits he allowed leaving the yard. Krehbiel is attending camp as a non-roster invitee and looks like a long shot to win a spot in the Mariners' Opening Day bullpen.

  • Chris Martin RP | TEX

Red Sox's Chris Martin: Downplays injury

Martin said his groin tightness is a minor concern and that he's playing catch Sunday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.

The veteran right-hander was unable to throw his scheduled live bullpen session Saturday due to right groin tightness, but it's apparently not a serious issue. Assuming there's no further problems, Martin should be back on a mound within the next couple days.

  • Tyson Miller RP | CHW

Mariners' Tyson Miller: Draws praise from Servais

Miller, who has yet to allow an earned run through three Cactus League appearances, has drawn praise from manager Scott Servais for his mechanics and performance, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.

Miller was most recently on the mound Friday against the Cubs, firing two perfect innings during which he recorded a strikeout. The 28-year-old posted a 1-0 record, 4.70 ERA and 1.24 WHIP across 10 appearances for the Mets, Dodgers and Brewers in 2023, and he's working with a four-pitch arsenal that features a fastball and slider the Mariners particularly like. Miller could break camp as a multi-inning relief option if he continues impressing, and Servais notes the right-hander compares favorably in certainly ways to a recent effective Mariners late-inning option. "I really liked what I saw out of Miller." Servais said. "He has a lot of release point characteristics, pitch characteristics that Paul Sewald had as far as how he does it."

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Throws bullpen Friday

Santos (lat) threw a light bullpen Friday, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.

It was an important benchmark for Santos as he works back from being shut down with lat soreness in mid-February. Drayer notes the session appeared to go well, but there's not yet an indication of when the Mariners may be willing to allow Santos to test himself out in Cactus League action.

  • Shane Greene RP | TEX

Rangers' Shane Greene: Removed due to broken nail

Greene was removed from Saturday's game against the Dodgers while warming up due to a broken nail on his right middle finger, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

A trainer was looking at Greene's hand and pulled him before Greene got a chance to pitch in Saturday's game, but the issue doesn't appear to be anything too serious. Greene has surrendered one earned run in four innings this spring while striking out five batters and walking one.

  • Shane Greene RP | TEX

Rangers' Shane Greene: Leaves game following warmups

Greene (hand) did not pitch in Saturday's spring training game against the Dodgers, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Pitching coach Mike Maddux and a trainer checked out Greene's throwing hand during warmups before they all walked back to the dugout. Diego Castillo entered the game in Greene's place.

  • Carson Coleman RP | NYY

Rangers' Carson Coleman: Lands on 60-day IL

The Rangers placed Coleman (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Saturday.

Coleman underwent surgery on his right elbow in April of 2023 and will officially miss the first few months of the regular season as he continues to recover. His 40-man roster spot will be filled by Jose Barrero, who was claimed off waivers from Cincinnati on Saturday.

  • Chris Martin RP | TEX

Red Sox's Chris Martin: Dealing with groin tightness

Martin, who was scheduled to throw a live bullpen session Saturday, left warmups due to right groin tightness, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.

Martin walked to the clubhouse after throwing two warmup pitches Saturday, and he will not participate in his scheduled bullpen session. He appeared in 55 games for the Red Sox last season and posted a 1.05 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 46:8 K:BB over 51.1 innings.

  • Garrett Hill RP | DET

Tigers' Garrett Hill: Reassigned to minor-league camp

Hill (lat) was reassigned to minor-league camp by the Tigers on Friday.

Hill has been dealing with a lat strain since mid-February, which has interrupted his spring training routine. The righty will now look to get healthy in the minors before potentially returning to Detroit as a bullpen option at some point. Hill made 26 appearances for the Tigers over the last two seasons, including eight starts, and has a career 5.09 ERA.
