  • Tristan Beck RP | SF

Giants' Tristan Beck: Called up Wednesday

Beck was called up from Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Beck will join the Giants ahead of their series finale against the Marlins, replacing Alex Wood (hamstring), who was added to the 15-day injured list. Beck had been starting for Sacramento, producing a 3.38 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with nine punchouts over 13.1 innings. Though the Giants have an opening in the rotation with Wood on the shelf, Ross Stripling is expected to get the first chance to replace the southpaw, so Beck may be on hand with the big club as a long-relief option.

  • David Bednar RP | NYY

Pirates' David Bednar: Earns fifth save

Bednar allowed one hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Tuesday against the Rockies.

Bednar was tasked with protecting a two-run lead and was successful to earn his fifth save of the season. He served up a two-out double but managed to strike out C.J. Cron to end the game. Bednar has allowed only one earned run across eight innings to begin the campaign while also maintaining a 10:1 K:BB.

  • Miguel Castro RP | CHW

Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Records first save

Castro recorded his first save of the season Tuesday, allowing one walk in a scoreless ninth inning against the Cardinals.

Castro entered the game to protect an 8-7 lead after Andrew Chafin gave up three runs at the beginning of the ninth inning. The 28-year-old bounced back from a one-out walk, retiring Dylan Carlson to end the game and record his first save of the year. With a 2.25 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over eight innings, Castro is expected to continue sharing high-leverage opportunities late in games.

  • Drey Jameson RP | ARI

Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Solid in second start

Jameson did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Cardinals, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out three.

Jameson continues to provide valuable innings on the mound for Arizona. The 25-year-old has acquired two impressive wins and a save on the season, posting a 2.25 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 16 innings between the rotation and bullpen. While he did not factor into this decision, Jameson limited the Cardinals' batters to two runs on four hits before being relieved in the fourth inning. He figures to get another start in the upcoming series with San Diego while Zach Davies (oblique) remains sidelined.

  • Reds' Casey Legumina: Dispatched to minors

The Reds optioned Legumina to Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday.

Legumina was sent back to the minors to clear a spot on the 26-man active roster for right-hander Levi Stoudt, who was activated from the taxi squad ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday versus the Rays. During his first taste of the majors, Legumina made two appearances out of the bullpen, striking out four over 4.1 innings while allowing one run on three hits and one walk.

  • Andrew Chafin RP | CIN

Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Rocked for first time

Chafin allowed three runs on two hits and one walk over a third of an inning in Tuesday's 8-7 win over St. Louis.

Chafin was brought in to finish off the Cardinals in a non-save situation, then created a save opportunity for Miguel Castro, who finished the game. The outing was the first blemish for Chafin, who was 3-for-3 in save chances and had not allowed a run in seven innings prior to Tuesday.

  • Joe Mantiply RP | TOR

Diamondbacks' Joe Mantiply: Makes season debut

Mantiply allowed one run on one hit while striking out one over 1.1 innings in Tuesday's 8-7 win over the Cardinals.

Mantiply was activated off the injured list earlier in the day and made his season debut in what was low-leverage spot -- the Diamondbacks were leading, 7-3, at the time. The lefty later gave up a home run to Willson Contreras. Mantiply has been very good at keeping balls in the park since joining Arizona, giving up just seven homers over 102 innings (0.7 HR/9) entering the 2023 season. He was an All Star in 2022 and is expected to be part of the trusted, high-leverage relief crew.

  • Jose Alvarado RP | PHI

Phillies' Jose Alvarado: Nails down first save

Alvarado struck out two in a perfect ninth inning during the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the White Sox, recording his first save of the season in a 7-4 win.

The Phillies' bullpen was outstanding in the matinee, as Gregory Soto, Craig Kimbrel, Seranthony Dominguez and Alvarado each fanned two in perfect innings of relief. Alvarado has been the best of the high-leverage quartet in the early going, striking out multiple batters in seven straight appearances and posting a stunning 18:0 K:BB through 7.1 innings to go along with his 1.23 ERA and three holds. No Philadelphia hurler has more than one save yet, but the southpaw appears to be staking a claim to being the team's relief ace, if not its full-time closer.

  • Jake Junis RP | TEX

Giants' Jakob Junis: Takes loss in relief outing

Junis (2-1) allowed three runs on six hits and no walks while striking out one over 2.2 innings, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Marlins.

Junis was responsible for Jazz Chisholm's three-run home run in the fourth inning, and the Giants' offense didn't bounce back from it. With starter Alex Wood (hamstring) likely headed for the injured list, one of Junis or Ross Stripling, who both pitched Tuesday, should get a look in the rotation. Stripling is a bit more stretched out, having covered 12.1 innings over four games compared to Junis' 12.2 innings in five appearances. Junis has struggled to a 4.26 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 12:5 K:BB this season while filling a swingman role.

  • A.J. Puk RP | ARI

Marlins' A.J. Puk: Earns third save

Puk picked up the save Tuesday against the Giants. He allowed one hit while striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning.

Puk worked around Wilmer Flores' leadoff single, striking out a pair to secure his third save of the season and his second in as many days. The left-hander has pitched seven consecutive scoreless innings since allowing a run in his first outing of the season. Puk appears to have claimed the lead closing job in Miami, with Dylan Floro pitching the eighth Tuesday. The 27-year-old Puk is 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 8:1 K:BB through eight innings to start the year.
