  • Jose Castillo RP | NYM

Padres' Jose Castillo: Sent back to Triple-A

Castillo was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Friday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Castillo made his season debut with the Padres this past Tuesday against the Angels and was charged with four earned runs while recording only one out. He missed the first three months of the year with a shoulder injury and doesn't seem to be fully back into form.

  • Alek Jacob RP | SD

Padres' Alek Jacob: Arrives in majors

The Padres selected Jacob's contract from Double-A San Antonio on Friday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Jacob fell to the 16th round of the 2021 MLB Draft following a four-year NCAA career at Gonzaga, but he's done nothing but dominate minor-league hitters to the tune of a 1.82 ERA and 138:25 K:BB in 104 professional innings. The 25-year-old right-hander could prove to be a weapon in relief for the Padres as he completes his swift ascent to the big leagues.

  • Joe La Sorsa RP | BOS

Nationals' Joe La Sorsa: Optioned to Triple-A

The Nationals optioned La Sorsa to Triple-A Rochester on Friday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

La Sorsa was lit up for four runs on six hits and two walks over two innings during his last appearance Wednesday against the Reds. As a result, he'll head back to the minors. Joan Adon was promoted to Washington in a corresponding move.

  • Joan Adon SP | WAS

Nationals' Joan Adon: Recalled from Rochester

The Nationals recalled Adon from Triple-A Rochester on Friday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

Adon hasn't been spectacular in Triple-A with a 4.81 ERA and 1.59 WHIP through 76.2 innings, but he'll be called upon to bolster Washington's pitching staff. Adon has been used almost exclusively as a starter throughout his career, but the Nationals could deploy him in a multi-inning relief role. Joe La Sorsa was optioned to Rochester in a corresponding move.

  • Nick Burdi RP | NYM

Cubs' Nick Burdi: Slated for bullpen session

Burdi (abdomen) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

It will be a "touch and feel" bullpen session, so he won't be going all out. Burdi has been sidelined since late May following an emergency appendectomy and is eligible for activation toward the end of July.

  • Robert Garcia RP | TEX

Marlins' Robert Garcia: Recalled from Triple-A

The Marlins selected Garcia's contract from Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

Garcia has had a solid season in Jacksonville so far, putting up a 2.95 ERA and 1.41 WHIP with 54 strikeouts through 36.2 innings. The 27-year-old southpaw will be making his MLB debut when he gets into a game, and he could be in the mix for some high-leverage outings down the line if his impressive strikeout rate translates to the majors. Jeff Lindgren was designated for assignment to make room for Garcia on the 40-man roster.

  • Tony Santillan RP | CIN

Reds' Tony Santillan: Wins in return

Santillan (1-0) picked up the win in Thursday's game against Washington. He allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth inning in a 5-4 extra-inning victory.

Santillan was activated off the 60-day injured list earlier in the day and made his season debut. He was one of six Reds relievers to work Thursday. Santillan is expected to be a key bridge to Alexis Diaz and the high-leverage crew.

  • Alexis Diaz RP | TEX

Reds' Alexis Diaz: Picks up 25th save

Diaz picked up the save Thursday against the Nationals. He allowed one run on one hit while striking out one over one inning.

Diaz didn't get off to a great start after entering the game in the bottom of the 10th with a two-run lead, allowing Alex Call to advance to third on a wild pitch before giving up an RBI single to Lane Thomas. The right-hander then hit Jeimer Candelario with a pitch before finally settling down and retiring the next three hitters to secure his 25th save, tying him with Camilo Doval for the National League lead. Diaz has now converted his last three save attempts, though he has allowed at least one hit in each of his last four appearances.

  • Alex Vesia RP | LAD

Dodgers' Alex Vesia: Fires perfect inning for save

Vesia struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Thursday's 5-2 win over the Pirates.

It was clean work for Vesia in his return to the major-league roster after two weeks at Triple-A Oklahoma City. He'd given up six runs (five earned) over 3.2 innings across his five appearances prior to getting sent down, but he was sharp in his return. Save chances are likely to be sparse for Vesia -- Evan Phillips had pitched three times between July 2-4, so he was likely getting a little extra rest. Brusdar Graterol picked up a hold in the eighth inning and Caleb Ferguson should also be in the mix for saves, which will likely keep Vesia in a middle-relief role. He has a 7.20 ERA, 2.30 WHIP and 31:12 K:BB through 20 innings this season while adding three holds and an 0-4 record.

  • Jordan Hicks RP | CHW

Cardinals' Jordan Hicks: Snares sixth save

Hicks picked up the save in Thursday's 3-0 win over the Marlins. He struck out one over a perfect inning.

Hicks grabbed his sixth save of the campaign Thursday, each of which has come since No. 1 closer Ryan Helsley (forearm) was placed on the 15-day IL on June 12. Since Helsley's injury, Hicks has handled closing duties and owns a 2.00 ERA and 12:2 K:BB through nine appearances (nine innings).
