  • Mike Mayers RP | TOR

Cardinals' Mike Mayers: Called up by St. Louis

Mayers was recalled by the Cardinals on Wednesday and will serve in a relief role.

The young right-hander was moved to a permanent relief role earlier this week in hopes of accelerating his path to the majors, and the Cardinals will waste little time giving him an opportunity in the bullpen. Mayers made two appearances as a reliever in an earlier stint this season, allowing two earned runs over four innings, but should continue to see chances in low-leverage situations for the time being. Luke Weaver is still expected to take over Adam Wainwright's (back) spot in the rotation.

  • Mets' Robert Gsellman: Set for rehab start

Gsellman (hamstring) is slated to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Binghamton on Thursday.

Gsellman has been slowly working his way back from a left hamstring strain suffered during a June 27 outing and finally seems able to return to live action. It's unclear how many rehab appearances the right-hander will require before he's able to return to the Mets, but he should slot back into the injury-hampered rotation upon his activation. Gsellman racked up a 6.16 ERA over 17 games (14 starts) and a .303 BAA prior to being sidelined.

  • J.J. Hoover RP | WAS

Diamondbacks' J.J. Hoover: Sent down to Triple-A

Hoover was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Tuesday.

The right-hander surrendered four runs (three earned) while recording just one out in Tuesday night's contest, leading to an unfortunate ouster from the big league roster. Hoover certainly hasn't put together the most consistent 2017 campaign, racking up an ugly 4.82 ERA and 2.07 WHIP in his first year with the D-Backs, but should have plenty of opportunities to work things out at Triple-A. Rubby De La Rosa was reinstated from the 10-day DL to take his bullpen spot.

  • Diamondbacks' Rubby De La Rosa: Reinstated from DL

De La Rosa was reinstated from the 10-day disabled list Wednesday.

The right-handed reliever was slated to make a final rehab appearance Wednesday, but the team elected to have him return a tad earlier than expected. After missing the better part of July while recovering from shoulder inflammation, De La Rosa will likely slot back in as a middle reliever in the Arizona bullpen, where he posted a 5.40 ERA over just five innings before being sidelined.

  • Luis Ortiz RP | NYM

Brewers' Luis Ortiz: Impressive in back-to-back starts

In his last two starts, Ortiz allowed one earned run and posted a 13:0 K:BB over 13 innings.

Ortiz owned a 4.12 ERA and 1.27 WHIP as recently as July 13, but thanks to his last two outings, he now sits with a 3.57 ERA and 1.13 WHIP through 17 starts this season. He remains one of the top starting pitching prospects in the Brewers organization.

  • Andrew Chafin RP | CIN

Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Serves up two homers Tuesday

Chafin gave up two runs on two hits and two walks over an inning of relief in Tuesday's 8-3 loss to the Braves.

The game was tied at 2-2 entering the top of the seventh inning, but the Braves broke it open against J.J. Hoover and Chafin, who combined to give up three home runs. The last two blasts were back-to-back solo shots given up by Chafin, who hadn't allowed a home run prior to that since his first appearance of the season. It's only the third time in his last 23 outings that Chafin has conceded a run, so despite the poor showing Tuesday, he'll remain locked into a seventh- or eighth-inning role for the Diamondbacks in most contests.

  • Carl Edwards RP | DET

Cubs' Carl Edwards Jr.: Grabs another hold Tuesday

Edwards recorded his 15th hold of the season in Tuesday's win over the White Sox. He pitched a perfect sixth inning with two strikeouts.

Edwards and three other Chicago relievers pitched four scoreless innings in relief of starter John Lackey. Outside of a three-run blowup on Friday, Edwards hasn't been scored on in 8.2 innings this month, and he's recorded 15 strikeouts. The young right-hander should continue to provide good ratios, along with plenty of strikeouts and holds.

  • J.J. Hoover RP | WAS

Diamondbacks' J.J. Hoover: Savaged for four runs by Braves

Hoover (1-1) gave up four runs -- three earned -- on three hits and a walk while recording just a single out against the Braves on Tuesday.

He entered a tie game in the seventh and promptly sent things spiraling out of control, although catcher Chris Iannetta's throwing error certainly didn't help. Despite a career-best strikeout rate (by far), Hoover's been anything but an asset in his first season as a member of Arizona's bullpen after washing out of Cincinnati last year, as he now owns an atrocious 2.07 WHIP. If he can't improve on that, and fast, he may ultimately find himself cast off the roster.

  • Nick Pivetta SP | SD

Phillies' Nick Pivetta: Strikes out seven in Tuesday's loss

Pivetta (3-6) coughed up five runs on six hits and a walk over six innings while striking out seven in Tuesday's 5-0 loss to the Astros.

He was locked in a pitcher's duel with Charlie Morton through five innings before things unraveled for Pivetta in the sixth. Although the right-hander continues to maintain a K/9 north of 9.0, he's now given up 17 runs in his last 16.1 innings thanks mainly to his difficulty in keeping the ball in the park -- Tuesday's start was his first since June 15 in which he didn't allow a homer. Pivetta will next take the mound Monday at home against the Braves.

  • Brock Stewart RP | LAD

Dodgers' Brock Stewart: Will start Wednesday

Stewart has been named as the starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Twins, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.

Stewart will get his first shot in the Dodgers' rotation this season after spending his time in long relief recently. The 25-year-old was plagued by an illness this weekend but has recovered and will have a 50-to-60 pitch limit during Wednesday's game. He has a chance to stick in the rotation if he performs well.
