Beeks struck out two and gave up a solo home run in two-thirds of an inning Friday, recording his first save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Pirates.

With Justin Lawrence (paternity leave) away from the team, Rockies manager Bud Black called on Jake Bird to get the final out of the eighth inning and the first of the ninth, but the right-hander needed 25 pitches to do it and left a runner on base when he exited. Black then turned to Beeks to close things out, but the southpaw made things dicey by immediately serving up a two-run shot to Oneil Cruz before finally getting the job done. Lawrence should be back by the end of the weekend, and Beeks has never recorded more than two saves in a season in his career, but he appears to have earned a spot in Colorado's high-leverage crew. Through 14 appearances and 16 innings, he's posted a 2.81 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 12:8 K:BB.

The Marlins placed Hoeing (hamstring) on the 15-day injured list Friday, retroactive to May 2.

Hoeing was off to a strong start to the season with a 1.83 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB over 19.2 innings. It's unclear whether his left hamstring strain will keep him on the shelf beyond the minimum. The Marlins recalled right-hander Darren McCaughan from Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move.

McCaughan has a 1-2 record over five starts for Jacksonville, posting a 6.14 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 22:8 K:BB over 22 frames. Right-hander Bryan Hoeing (hamstring) was placed on the 15-day IL in a corresponding move.

Treinen (chest) could be activated from the 15-day injured list during this weekend's series against Atlanta, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Treinen appeared in back-to-back games with Triple-A Oklahoma on Wednesday and Thursday, allowing one hit over two scoreless frames while striking out three. Treinen's return to the Dodgers' bullpen would be a welcome one, as Joe Kelly is dealing with a right groin injury.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Friday that Nelson (shoulder) will likely be out for the rest of the 2024 season following surgery, which is scheduled for May 6, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Nelson was transferred to the 60-day IL on Tuesday after injuring his left shoulder. Nelson received multiple opinions on how to proceed, but it was ultimately recommended that the southpaw undergo thoracic outlet surgery. Any hope that he would be able to return late in the season is now gone. Nelson appeared in 11 games for Arizona before his injury, posting a 4.22 ERA and 1.13 WHIP over 10.2 frames.

Diamondbacks manager Torrey Lovullo said Friday that Sewald (oblique) is expected to join the team for a road trip beginning Tuesday, John Gambadoro of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Sewald's rehab program was paused after the right-hander experienced soreness following an appearance with Triple-A Reno earlier this week. He was able to throw a bullpen session Wednesday though, and the right-hander is slated to pitch in an extended spring training game Saturday, per Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com. If all goes well, Sewald could be back with the team as soon as Tuesday in Cincinnati. He registered 34 saves last season, posting a 3.12 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over 60.2 innings with Arizona and Seattle.

Wesneski didn't factor into the decision Friday against the Brewers, allowing three hits and two walks over 6.1 scoreless innings. He struck out eight.

Wesneski was dominant, shutting out Milwaukee while matching his career high with eight punchouts. However, the Cubs bullpen couldn't maintain the 1-0 lead Wesneski handed off. The 26-year-old right-hander has allowed just one earned run over 10.1 innings in two starts. Overall, he's 2-0 with a stellar 0.54 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB across 16.2 innings in a swing role this season. While Justin Steele (hamstring), Kyle Hendricks (back) and Jordan Wicks (forearm) are all nearing returns, Wesneski has certainly made a compelling case to remain in Chicago's rotation.

Megill earned the save Friday in a 3-1 win over the Cubs, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning.

Megill set down the four, five and six batters in the Cubs' order Friday after Joel Payamps faced the top of the lineup in the eighth. Megill and Payamps both figure to see their share of ninth-inning work with Devin Williams (back) likely out until the All-Star break. The 30-year-old Megill lowered his ERA to 1.17 with a 0.91 WHIP and 7:3 K:BB through his first 7.2 innings this season.

Middleton (forearm) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Middleton has been on the 15-day IL since the start of the season after sustaining a right forearm strain in mid-March. He recently extended his throwing distance to 110 feet with no setback, and the right-hander has progressed enough to take the next step in his rehab program. Middleton will likely need multiple bullpen sessions without issue before beginning a rehab assignment.

Beck (arm) has been cleared to begin a throwing program, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Beck had surgery back in early March to address an aneurysm in his upper right arm. He is facing a slow build-up, with a return not expected until after the All-Star break.
