Pirates' Braxton Ashcraft: Dazzles in combined shutout
Ashcraft (4-2) picked up the win in Friday's 9-0 rout of the Rockies, allowing one hit and one walk over five scoreless innings. He struck out six.
Making his third straight start, Ashcraft delivered the best performance of his young career as he combined with fellow rookie Bubba Chandler on the shutout. Ashcraft racked up 14 swinging strikes on only 65 pitches (47 total strikes) as he set a new personal best in Ks, and since moving into the rotation the 25-year-old righty has a 1.35 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 15:2 K:BB over 13.1 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in St. Louis.

Ryan Thompson RP | ARI
Diamondbacks' Ryan Thompson: Throws sim game
Thompson (shoulder) threw a simulated game Friday, MLB.com reports.
Thompson has been throwing regularly the last two weeks and has graduated to sessions that mimic a game environment, meaning he's getting up and down multiple times. The next step is expected to be a minor-league or a camp game before the right-hander is activated.

Daniel Palencia RP | CHC
Cubs' Daniel Palencia: Perfect for 19th save
Palencia earned the save in Friday's victory over the Angels, striking out two in a perfect ninth inning.
The right-hander entered with a one-run lead and slammed the door on Los Angeles to secure his 19th save of the season. Palencia had allowed at least one run in four of his previous six outings, but Friday's performance was a clean rebound effort. On the year, the 25-year-old has been a steady force at the back end of Chicago's bullpen, posting a 1.93 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 51:14 K:BB across 46.2 innings.

Robert Suarez RP | ATL
Padres' Robert Suarez: Shaky in save Friday
Suarez allowed two hits and struck out two in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Friday's 2-1 win over the Dodgers.
Suarez had little margin for error, and he was able to escape a two-out situation with runners on the corners to pick up his first save since Aug. 11. This was the Padres' first save chance since that game. Suarez had allowed one run and racked up six strikeouts over four innings between save chances. For the season, he's up to 34 saves with a 3.09 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 59:14 K:BB through 55.1 innings.

Joey Wentz SP | ATL
Braves' Joey Wentz: Poor showing in fourth loss
Wentz (4-4) took the loss Friday against the Mets, allowing six runs on nine hits and two walks in 3.1 innings. He struck out three.
It was one of the worst outings of the year for Wentz, who tied a season high in runs allowed and set a season worst in hits allowed. The 3.1 innings were also the left-hander's fewest in a start this season. With Chris Sale (ribs) on a rehab assignment, Wentz could soon revert back to the bullpen. Wentz has a 3.94 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 34:14 K:BB over 38 frames for Atlanta, and his next appearance tentatively lines up to come on the road against the division-rival Marlins.

Ryan Brasier RP | CHC
Cubs' Ryan Brasier: Lands on IL with groin strain
The Cubs placed Brasier on the 15-day injured list Friday due to a left groin strain.
The injury may explain Brasier's recent struggles out of the bullpen, with the veteran right-hander allowing eight runs on 11 hits and two walks while striking out three batters across five innings in his last six outings. He'll undergo further tests to determine the severity of the injury, but he'll be out of action until at least Sept. 6. In a corresponding move, the Cubs recalled Javier Assad from Triple-A Iowa, and Assad will start against the Angels on Friday.

Tinoco will have the surgery in early September and could miss the entirety of the 2026 campaign. The 30-year-old ends the 2025 season with a 5.12 ERA and 10:8 K:BB across 19.1 innings.
