  • Mets' Jimmy Yacabonis: Outrighted to Triple-A

The Mets outrighted Yacabonis to Triple-A Syracuse on Monday, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.

Yacabonis was designated for assignment Saturday and passed through waivers unclaimed. The 31-year-old right-hander owns a career 6.08 ERA and 107:75 K:BB in 131.2 total major-league innings.

  • John Curtiss RP | ARI

Mets' John Curtiss: Recalled, goes on 60-day IL

The Mets recalled Curtiss from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday and placed him on the 60-day injured list with a loose body in his right elbow, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.

The transaction is a procedural move to clear out a 40-man roster spot for Sam Coonrod, who has been activated from the 60-day IL following a five-month absence to heal a high-grade lat strain. Curtiss is presumably done for the season.

  • Sam Coonrod RP | NYM

Mets' Sam Coonrod: Activated from 60-day IL

The Mets activated Coonrod (lat) from the 60-day injured list Monday, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.

Coonrod is finally ready to make his Mets debut, five months after being diagnosed with a high-grade lat strain. The righty reliever posted a 4.82 ERA and 12:7 K:BB over 9.1 minor-league rehab innings (10 appearances) between Single-A St. Lucie and Triple-A Syracuse.

  • Zack Thompson RP | STL

Cardinals' Zack Thompson: Moving into rotation

Thompson will join the Cardinals' rotation after Steven Matz landed on the 15-day injured list Monday with a left lat strain, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Matz could be in danger of missing the remainder of the 2023 season, so this will be a big opportunity for Thompson as the out-of-contention Cardinals look ahead to 2024 and beyond. The 25-year-old southpaw struck out eight batters over four innings of one-run ball in a spot start Aug. 6 against the Rockies and carries an overall 3.96 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 25 innings (17 appearances) this season for St. Louis.

  • Gus Varland RP | WAS

Dodgers' Gus Varland: Getting call to majors

Varland will be selected to the Dodgers' major-league roster Tuesday, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Varland was plucked away by the Brewers in the 2022 Rule 5 Draft, but they designated him for assignment in May and he has pitched to a 2.16 ERA and 39:8 K:BB across 33.1 innings with Triple-A Oklahoma City since being returned to the Dodgers' system. The 26-year-old right-hander figures to fill a middle relief role for Los Angeles.

  • Bryan Hoeing RP | SD

Marlins' Bryan Hoeing: Recalled from Jacksonville

Hoeing was recalled Monday from Triple-A Jacksonville, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

The 26-year-old right-hander will replace Huascar Brazoban, who has landed on the 15-day injured list with a left hamstring strain. Hoeing carries a 4.57 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 35:18 K:BB across 45.1 innings (six starts, 17 relief appearances) this season in the majors.

  • Marlins' Huascar Brazoban: Placed on 15-day IL

Brazoban was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday with a left hamstring strain, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

Brazoban suffered the injury while working in relief Sunday against the Yankees and will be sidelined through at least Aug. 29. Bryan Hoeing is joining the Marlins in a corresponding roster move.

  • George Soriano RP | STL

Marlins' George Soriano: Heads back to bullpen

Soriano struck out six and allowed two hits and three walks over 3.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in Friday's 9-4 loss to the Yankees.

Soriano made a three-inning start in his prior appearance Aug. 5 in Texas, but he ended up moving back to the bullpen with the Marlins calling up Eury Perez from Double-A Pensacola to fill out the No. 5 spot in the rotation. Because starter Jesus Luzardo was roughed up for seven runs in 3.1 innings before departing the contest, Soriano ended up making an extended mop-up appearance to help save the rest of the Miami bullpen. The 24-year-old right-hander is expected to continue serving in a multi-inning relief role, though he's pitched well enough this season to garner consideration for higher-leverage spots.

  • Edwin Diaz RP | LAD

Mets' Edwin Diaz: Throwing from base of mound

Diaz (knee) recently began throwing from the base of the mound, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Diaz will continue the process for another week or so and could progress to full mound work after that, although Mets general manager Billy Eppler would not commit to that. "Let's just really focus on the process," Eppler said. "What are we doing today, and was today successful? Will we repeat today? And how many days would we repeat before we move to the next phase? When we get a chance to get some objective data as well as subjective data -- feedback from the player -- then we can see what comes next." Diaz has been holding out hope for a late-season return from patellar tendon surgery, but it's not a guarantee it will happen. With his team turning the page to 2024, they might decide it's not worth pushing Diaz to return this season.

  • Reed Garrett RP | NYM

Mets' Reed Garrett: Returns to Triple-A

The Mets optioned Garrett to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday.

Garrett was up as the 27th man during Saturday's doubleheader versus Atlanta and was rocked for six runs over 2.1 innings in the first game. The 30-year-old holds an 8.91 ERA and 23:27 K:BB over 34.1 career relief innings in the big leagues.
