  • Emmanuel Clase RP | CLE

Guardians' Emmanuel Clase: Earns 47th save

Clase earned the save against the Reds on Wednesday, allowing one hit and two walks with one strikeout in a scoreless ninth inning.

Clase was called upon to protect a 5-2 lead in the ninth frame and worked out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs to secure his 47th save of the season. While he was a bit shaky, the closer has not allowed an earned run in 10 September outings. He owns a microscopic 0.61 ERA, 0.65 WHIP and 66:10 K:BB across 73.1 innings and is in a tightly contested battle with Ryan Helsley of the Cardinals for the major-league lead in saves.

  • Pirates' Aroldis Chapman: Earns 12th save

Chapman earned the save against the Brewers on Wednesday, allowing one hit and striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning.

Chapman was called upon to protect a 2-1 lead in the ninth and secured his 12th save when Willy Adames was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double. Since allowing four earned runs in a blown save Sept. 7, Chapman has locked down six consecutive chances with eight strikeouts. On the season, the southpaw owns a 3.90 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 95:39 K:BB across 60 innings.

  • Luis Ortiz SP | CLE

Pirates' Luis Ortiz: Goes seven strong in win

Ortiz (7-6) earned the win against the Brewers on Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits and one walk with five strikeouts over seven innings.

Ortiz allowed a solo home run to Jake Bauers in the second inning but rebounded with five scoreless frames to end his 2024 campaign with a victory. Over his final 10 outings, the 25-year-old compiled four quality starts while yielding two earned runs or fewer five times. He'll finish the season with a solid 3.32 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 107:42 K:BB over a career-high 135.2 innings as both a starter and reliever.

  • Cole Irvin RP | LAD

Twins' Cole Irvin: DFA'd by Minnesota

The Twins designated Irvin for assignment Wednesday.

Irvin allowed five earned runs over just 3.2 innings during his brief time with the Twins, and he's now been DFA'd by two teams within the last 10 days. The left-hander carries a 5.11 ERA and 1.45 WHIP through 111 innings on the year and would not be eligible for the postseason if a contender claims him.

  • Brent Headrick RP | NYY

Twins' Brent Headrick: Back in minors

The Twins optioned Headrick to Triple-A St. Paul on Wednesday.

Headrick logged one appearance during his four-day stint in the big leagues, giving up one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out five batters over three innings. He'll now be sent back across the Mississippi River in favor of Jorge Alcala, who was recalled from Triple-A.

  • Jorge Alcala RP | TOR

Twins' Jorge Alcala: Up from St. Paul

The Twins recalled Alcala from Triple-A St. Paul on Wednesday.

Alcala owns a 6.75 ERA and 1.30 WHIP across 20 innings in the majors since the All-Star break, but he'll be called upon to give the Twins a fresh bullpen arm as they fight to secure a wild-card spot. He'll take the place of Brent Headrick, who was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

  • Justin Topa RP | MIN

Twins' Justin Topa: Returns from injured list

The Twins reinstated Topa (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Wednesday.

Topa has been on the injured list all season while working his way back from a torn patellar tendon he suffered during spring training and an elbow issue that appeared during a rehab assignment in August. He surrendered three earned runs over two innings after restarting his minor-league assignment Friday, and he's now been given the green light to return to Minnesota's bullpen for the team's final playoff push. Given the amount of time he's missed, the 33-year-old righty will likely be limited to middle relief. Cole Irvin was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

  • Chris Roycroft RP | STL

Cardinals' Chris Roycroft: Rejoins big-league bullpen

The Cardinals recalled Roycroft from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday.

He's taking the roster spot vacated by JoJo Romero (forearm), who landed on the 15-day injured list. Roycroft has compiled a 4.01 ERA and 33:15 K:BB across 33.2 innings this season during his time in the Cardinals bullpen.

  • JoJo Romero RP | STL

Cardinals' JoJo Romero: To IL with forearm inflammation

The Cardinals placed Romero on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with left forearm flexor inflammation.

Romero doesn't appear to be dealing with any structural damage to his pitching arm, but the injury will prematurely end his 2024 campaign. The setup man enjoyed a successful season, finishing with a 3.36 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 51:16 K:BB over 59 innings. He scooped up seven wins and was credited with 30 holds and one save.

  • Brett de Geus RP | PHI
