  • Robert Suarez RP | ATL

Padres' Robert Suarez: Reaches 40-save milestone

Suarez struck out two batters in a perfect inning to earn a save against the White Sox on Sunday.

Suarez needed just 11 pitches (eight strikes) to mow through the White Sox's 2-3-4 hitters. He hit the 40-save mark for the first time in his career and has converted eight straight chances. During that span, he's registered a 2.45 ERA over 18.1 innings. For the year, Suarez owns a 3.06 ERA and a 72:16 K:BB through 67.2 frames.

  • Tony Santillan RP | CIN

Reds' Tony Santillan: Collects seventh save

Santillan earned the save in Sunday's 1-0 win over the Cubs, allowing two walks and zero hits while striking out two batters in one scoreless inning.

With Emilio Pagan being dispatched in each of the last two games, Santillan was brought out for the ninth inning to preserve the Reds' shutout bid. It wasn't an easy outing, as Santillan issued two walks while tossing 23 pitches (12 strikes), but he finished things off by striking out two of the last three batters he faced. He has yielded just one earned run across his last 17 outings and has a 1.35 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 26.2 innings since the All-Star break.

  • Joey Cantillo SP | CLE

Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Fans five in no-decision

Cantillo did not factor in the decision during Sunday's loss to Minnesota. He allowed a run on four hits and two walks over 4.1 innings while striking out five.

Cantillo gave up his lone run in the third inning. He loaded the bases in the fifth but was not charged with any runs after Erik Sabrowski cleaned up the mess. Cantillo has given up fewer than two runs in six consecutive outings; during that span, he's produced an impressive 1.32 ERA across 34 frames. However, he's also walked 12 batters during that time and has issued 28 free passes in his last 12 starts. Cantillo owns a 3.21 ERA with a 100:42 K:BB through 89.2 innings this season. He's expected to make his final start of the regular season next weekend at home against the Rangers.

  • Jeff Hoffman RP | TOR

Blue Jays' Jeff Hoffman: Collects 32nd save

Hoffman earned the save in Sunday's 8-5 win over the Royals, allowing one hit and zero walks in a scoreless ninth inning. He did not record a strikeout.

Hoffman got the call to protect the Blue Jays' three-run lead in the ninth. He yielded a double to Mike Yastrzemski, but Hoffman closed things out by getting Bobby Witt and Vinnie Pasquantino to both ground out, and the win clinched the Blue Jays a spot in the postseason. Hoffman has had his struggles this season but has not given up a run in each of his last four outings. He has a 3.71 ERA and 1.24 WHIP across 26.2 innings while converting on 10 of 13 save opportunities since the All-Star break.

  • Ryan Walker RP | SF

Giants' Ryan Walker: Converts 16th save

Walker struck out one and didn't allow a baserunner over two-thirds of a scoreless inning, earning the save in Sunday's 3-1 win over the Dodgers.

Walker has had some ups and downs this month, but he has converted four of five save chances. He came into this game after Joey Lucchesi stayed in to face Max Muncy at the start of the ninth inning. Walker is now at 16 saves, eight holds and five blown saves while pitching to a 3.81 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 57:17 K:BB across 59 innings this season.

  • Giants' Trevor McDonald: Shows well in first start

McDonald allowed one run on six hits and a walk while striking out three over six-plus innings in a no-decision Sunday versus the Dodgers.

McDonald went pitch-for-pitch with Emmet Sheehan over the first six innings. In the seventh, McDonald put three straight batters on base, leading to the lone run on his line, before Spencer Bivens relieved him and put out the fire. McDonald has given up three runs while posting a 4:2 K:BB across eight innings over his two major-league outings this season. If he did enough Sunday to earn another turn through the rotation, that would likely come in a home matchup versus the Rockies in the final series of the season.

  • Mitch Spence SP | ATH

Athletics' Mitch Spence: Rough outing vs. Pirates

Spence (3-6) took the loss Sunday against the Pirates, allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and two walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out one.

Spence struggled out of the gate Sunday, allowing a pair of two-out runs in the opening inning before the Pirates added on with a two-run homer in the second. It's the first start and second appearance for Spence since he was recalled from Triple-A earlier this month. Overall, the right-hander sports a 4.96 ERA with a 1.41 WHIP and 65 strikeouts across 81.2 innings this year.

  • Trevor Megill RP | MIL

Brewers' Trevor Megill: Likely won't return until playoffs

Manager Pat Murphy said Sunday that the best case scenario for Megill (elbow) is to return for Milwaukee's regular-season finale Sept. 28 against Cincinnati, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

The best-case timeline, according to Murphy, would mean Megill would throw a bullpen Tuesday and live batting practice Friday. The timeline could be adjusted based on how the right-hander recovers from the throwing sessions, but that would mean he wouldn't return until the postseason. The Brewers are tracking toward a top-two seed in the NL, which would allow them to bypass the wild-card round and give Megill extra time to get healthy.

  • Tanner Rainey RP | DET

Tigers' Tanner Rainey: Summoned to big-league club

The Tigers selected Rainey's contract from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Rainey began the season with the Pirates, accumulating an ugly 10.57 ERA and 1.70 WHIP over 7.2 innings spanning 11 appearances. He was released in early July and subsequently signed a minor-league deal with Detroit. Since joining the organization, Rainey has been effective with Toledo, posting a 2.52 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 35:14 K:BB across 25 innings. He'll likely fill a low-leverage spot in the Tigers bullpen over the final week of the campaign. Charlie Morton was designated for assignment Sunday to make room for Rainey on the 28-man active roster and 40-man roster.

  • Drew Pomeranz RP | LAA

Cubs' Drew Pomeranz: Takes loss in relief

Pomeranz (2-2) allowed a run on two hits across an inning of work to take the loss Saturday against the Reds. He struck out two.

The southpaw entered a 2-2 game in the fifth inning after Chicago starter Javier Assad covered four innings, and Pomeranz allowed a solo home run to Spencer Steer. This was the first run allowed by the veteran reliever over his last seven appearances, and he still has a sparkling 2.30 ERA for the season to go along with a 10.0 K/9. Pomeranz should stick in a key relief role for the Cubs as they head into the playoffs.
