Vasquez (2-2) took the loss against Atlanta on Wednesday, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out three batters over 3.1 innings.

After working in bulk relief in his previous outing, Vasquez got a traditional start Wednesday. The right-hander served up a two-run homer to Eddie Rosario in the second inning, which was enough to saddle him with the loss on a day when New York was shut out for the second straight game. Aside from the long ball, Vasquez gave up only one other hit, but he also walked three batters and needed 60 pitches to get through 3.1 frames. The Yankees' rotation is extremely thin right now with Nestor Cortes (shoulder) out at least another month, Carlos Rodon (hamstring) not eligible to return from the IL until next Tuesday and Domingo German (personal) out for the season, so Vasquez could be needed to fill a spot in the rotation -- either in bulk relief or as a traditional starter -- for the immediate future.

Kremer dropped to 11-5 after allowing three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four over six innings in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Padres.

Kremer turned in a baseline quality start, with just a rough third inning tarnishing his line. He's allowed no more than three runs in any of his last five starts, giving up 11 runs over 29.1 innings in that span. For the season, he's posted a 4.50 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 124:43 K:BB through 138 innings over 25 starts. The right-hander should get a little extra time to shake off this loss with Baltimore recently transitioning to a six-man rotation. He's lined up for a home start versus the Blue Jays next week.

Verlander (8-6) earned the win Wednesday, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits and two walks over five innings in a 12-5 win over the Marlins. He struck out two.

It wasn't Verlander's best effort, though he did enough to earn his second win thanks to Houston's offensive outburst. It's the first time in three starts that Verlander failed to make it through six innings since rejoining the Astros at the trade deadline. Overall, the veteran right-hander has a 3.36 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 94:35 K:BB across 19 starts (112.1 innings) between the Astros and Mets. Verlander currently lines up for a home matchup with the Red Sox in his next outing.

Marsh allowed a run on four hits and five walks while striking out six over five innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Wednesday.

Marsh worked behind opener James McArthur, who allowed three runs in a shaky first inning. Given that he allowed a season-high five walks, it could have been a much worse outing for Marsh, who was working in relief for the third time in his nine appearances this season. He remains in search of his first win (0-6) with a 5.68 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 41:24 K:BB through 38 innings. The Royals are just playing out the string, so the 25-year-old should continue to function as a member of the rotation. He's tentatively projected for a favorable road outing versus Oakland next week.

Syndergaard (1-2) took the loss Wednesday, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks over 4.1 innings against Cincinnati. He struck out three.

Syndergaard allowed just one run through his first three innings before the Reds broke the game open with four runs on a pair of homers in the fourth. The 30-year-old Syndergaard's now allowed 12 earned runs through his first four starts (21.1 innings) with Cleveland. His ERA sits at an unsightly 6.57 with a 1.45 WHIP and 49:15 K:BB across 16 starts (76.2 innings) this season between the Guardians and Dodgers. Syndergaard's currently lined up for a home matchup with those same Dodgers in his next outing.

Castillo (9-7) allowed four runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out three over seven innings to earn the win in Wednesday's 6-5 victory over the Royals.

For the second time in three August outings, Castillo was not at his best, but he was able to nab his second win of the month. The right-hander benefited from three of the Royals' four scoring plays against him coming on outs. This was the third time he's allowed four or more runs in nine starts since the beginning of July. Overall, Castillo is at a 3.23 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 166:37 K:BB through 150.1 innings over 25 starts. He's projected for another favorable start on the road against the White Sox next week.

Olson allowed four runs on eight hits across 2.2 innings and did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Twins. He walked one and struck out three.

After holding Minnesota scoreless over six innings in his last start, it was a different story for Olson on Wednesday. The rookie labored, as he needed 67 pitches to retire eight batters and allowed way too many baserunners. However, his offense bailed him out in an eventual 8-7 Detroit win. Olson has shown some promise in his debut season, but inconsistency has left him with a 4.83 ERA overall. The righty should stick in the rotation, and he lines up to start again Monday against the Cubs.

Paddack (elbow) is facing live hitters at the team's Fort Myers, Fla. complex this week, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.

He still doesn't have clearance to appear in a game, however. The Twins haven't ruled him out for returning this season, but the odds seem long given that he'll need several weeks of a rehab assignment. At least if he can appear in some minor-league or instructional league games, he'll get a head start on returning next season. The right-hander underwent the second Tommy John surgery of his career in May 2022.

Civale (6-3) earned the win Wednesday, allowing five hits and a walk over six scoreless innings against the Giants. He struck out five.

It was the first win for Civale since he was traded from Cleveland at the deadline. He's now 1-1 through his first three starts with Tampa while allowing five runs over 15.1 innings. Overall, Civale's ERA is down to 2.44 with a 1.12 WHIP and 69:24 K:BB across 16 starts (92.1 innings) between the Rays and Guardians. He's currently lined up for a favorable home matchup with the Rockies in his next outing.

Rodon (hamstring) threw a five-inning simulated game Wednesday in Tampa, Max Goodman of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.

As long as he responds well to the workout with no renewed discomfort, Rodon should be able to slot back into the Yankees' starting rotation next Tuesday against the Nationals. He's been on the 15-day injured list since Aug. 7 with a left hamstring strain after also missing the first three months of the 2023 campaign because of forearm and back problems.
