Sale was placed on the 10-day injured list with left elbow inflammation Saturday, retroactive to Aug. 14.

Sale racked up 25 strikeouts over his last two starts since allowing eight runs in a brief outing against the Yankees on Aug. 3. The seven-time All-Star is 6-11 with a 4.40 ERA across 25 starts. Ryan Brasier was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket in a corresponding move.

Paxton (9-6) allowed four runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts across five innings but was credited with the win against the Indians on Saturday.

The outing ended a string of three straight quality starts for Paxton. The left-hander allowed two runs before recording an out and was nicked for two more runs in the fifth inning on RBI singles by Carlos Santana and Yasiel Puig. Paxton has a 4.53 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 141 strikeouts in 113.1 innings this season and will next take the mound in a tough test Friday in Dodger Stadium.

Eovaldi is expected to throw 60 pitches when he starts Sunday against the Orioles, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Manager Alex Cora confirmed Eolvadi will start Sunday if the Red Sox didn't need him in relief Friday -- they didn't -- so he looks like a go for Sunday. The 60-pitch limit means he's unlikely to go long enough to pitch the five innings needed to qualify for a win.

Medina was promoted to High-A Tampa on Saturday.

Medina needs to be added to the 40-man roster this offseason, so his ascent up the ranks isn't strictly related to readiness. He has some of the best pure stuff in the minors, but his command is well below average, hence his 115:67 K:BB in 93 innings at Low-A. However, he has been pitching very well of late, fanning 51 with 12 walks over 35 innings in his last six starts.

Carrasco (illness) will return this season as a reliever, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.

If his arm feels good Saturday, he will throw an inning in a rehab appearance for Double-A Akron on Monday. Manager Terry Francona said that Carrasco's eyes lit up when he was told he would be kept on a reliever's program, so it seems like this is the best course for all parties. Carrasco will presumably be stretched out next year, but he will work out of the bullpen if he makes it back this season.

Cole (hamstring) played catch Friday for the first time since being scratched from Tuesday's start, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Cole said he felt no ill effects following the session and is expected to play catch again this weekend in Oakland. That will be followed by an "extensive" bullpen session when Houston returns home. Getting through that pain-free will clear Cole for a return to the rotation during a four-game set against the Tigers which begins Monday. "Right now, our hope is that he's going to be able to pitch at the back end of that Detroit Tigers series," manager A.J. Hinch said. The Astros will need a fifth starter Thursday.

Luzardo took the loss for Triple-A Las Vegas against Albuquerque in his return from the injured list Thursday, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and a walk over 3.1 innings. He struck out one.

The promising prospect was making his return to the Aviators after completing an extended rehab assignment due to a lat injury. Luzardo had mostly held his own in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League prior to Thursday's rocky outing, but the rough night pushed his ERA with the Aviators to a bloated 5.17 across four starts.

Verlander allowed two runs on four hits while striking out 11 over seven innings in a no-decision Friday versus the Athletics.

Verlander recorded his sixth consecutive double-digit strikeout performance, but he was long gone by the time the Astros dropped a 3-2 decision in 13 innings. The 36-year-old owns a 2.81 ERA and 0.84 WHIP with 228 strikeouts in 169.2 innings this season. The ace carries a 15-4 record into his next start, scheduled for Thursday versus his former team, the Tigers.

Sandoval (0-1) allowed three runs on five hits and a walk over 4.1 innings Friday, striking out three and taking the loss versus the White Sox.

Sandoval got into trouble in the third inning, allowing a pair of runs, and another run scored on his watch in the fourth. The 22-year-old now has a 5.79 ERA and 1.50 WHIP through 14 innings in the majors with a 15:7 K:BB. He's penciled in for Wednesday's road start against the Rangers.

Civale (1-2) allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts across six innings while taking a loss against the Yankees on Friday.

The right-hander gave up two runs in the first and then an unearned run, which proved to be the difference, during the fifth. This was the first time Civale allowed more than a run in any of his four starts, and yet he has a losing record. He also owns a 1.50 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 22 strikeouts in 24 MLB innings. Civale will make his next start at the Mets on Wednesday.
