Cole is not starting Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the White Sox, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Cole returned to the clubhouse shortly after beginning his warmup in the bullpen, per Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest, but the specifics of his absence remain unclear. Chris Devenski will start the nightcap in his place as the Astros are likely to employ a bullpen game on short notice.

Mejia was placed on the restricted list Tuesday for personal reasons.

Mejia last pitched for the Angels on Saturday, and he'll now be away from the team for an unspecified period of time due to the personal issues. Jake Jewell was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake to bolster the bullpen.

Canning (elbow) was activated off the 10-day injured list to start Tuesday versus the Pirates.

Canning landed on the injured list in early August with right elbow inflammation, but he's able to make a quick return to the starting rotation. The 23-year-old has a 4.76 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 86:26 K:BB over 79.1 innings this season. His previous outing was one of his best of the year as he fired six scoreless frames with seven strikeouts.

Carrasco (illness), who is scheduled to throw another bullpen session Tuesday, felt so good Monday that he tried to convince team trainers to let him toss a side session Monday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.

The team trainers didn't let Carrasco throw a day earlier than scheduled, but it's good to see that the right-hander is feeling healthy as he continues to fire bullpens. A timetable for his return remains a mystery at this point, though he's hopeful to return to the mound by the end of the 2019 campaign.

Manager Alex Cora stated Tuesday that "there's a good chance" Eovaldi will open Wednesday's game against the Indians, Tom Caron of NESN reports.

Eovaldi was expected to slot in as the team's primary closer after returning from injury, but he's struggled out of the bullpen since being activated from the injured list. Cora has been using in Eovaldi in low-leverage situations of late, but it appears that the right-hander will be given an opportunity to slot in as Boston's opener Wednesday. He'll likely have a chance to work deeper into the ballgame than a traditional opener, as he's slated to fire around 55 pitches. According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, Eovaldi will be used as a starter for the rest of the season in an effort to build his pitch count back up.

Luzardo (lat) is scheduled to return from his rehab assignment at High-A Stockton and make his next start Thursday with Triple-A Las Vegas, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Shut down in the spring with a left rotator cuff strain, Luzardo was cleared to rejoin the Triple-A rotation in late June, making three starts for the affiliate before being shut down with a Grade 2 left lat strain. The 21-year-old made quick progress in his recovery and was cleared to begin a rehab assignment about a month after suffering the lat injury. Luzardo looked dominant between starts with the Athletics' rookie-level Arizona League affiliate and at High-A, spinning five scoreless innings while notching 12 strikeouts. If he fares well in his initial outings upon returning to Triple-A, Luzardo could be in store for a late-season promotion to the big leagues.

The Rays promoted Ryan from High-A Charlotte to Double-A Montgomery on Tuesday, Sam Dykstra of MiLB.com reports.

The 23-year-old righty will move up a rung on the minor-league ladder on the heels of earning Florida State League Pitcher of the Week honors for turning in a one-hit, 13-strikeout gem in his most recent start Aug. 7. After the seven-inning shutout performance, Ryan now maintains a 1.79 ERA and 159:23 K:BB across 110.1 innings between Charlotte and Low-A Bowling Green in 2019.

Allard is listed as the Rangers' probable pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays.

As anticipated, Allard will be granted a second turn through the rotation, despite working only 4.1 innings and giving up two runs on three hits and three walks in his Rangers debut in Milwaukee over the weekend. The 22-year-old lefty has lost some prospect cachet after once being one of the more heralded young pitchers in the Braves organization, but he'll have a longer leash to prove himself at the big-league level with Texas than would have been possible in Atlanta.

Howard signed a minor-league contract with the Royals on Tuesday and will be assigned to Triple-A Omaha, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.

The 26-year-old Howard has yet to pitch above the Double-A level and made only three appearances with the Reds' Southern League affiliate at Chattanooga this season before he was released by the organization in June. The Royals saw enough potential in the righty -- a first-round pick in the 2014 first-year player draft -- to give him a look, but he'll need to produce quality results before building any serious momentum for a big-league callup.

Suarez (2-4) took the loss against the Pirates on Monday, giving up six runs (four earned) on seven hits over three innings, striking out two and walking none in a 10-2 defeat for the Angels.

The left-hander continues to struggle, as this was his third straight start in which he's yielded at least four earned runs. He's seen his ERA rise to 6.57 over that stretch to go along with a 1.64 WHIP across 49.1 innings. He'll look to get on track in his next start against the White Sox on the road on Saturday, but at this point the 21-year-old has done little to inspire confidence he'll provide viable fantasy numbers.
