ChiSox prospect Carlos Rodon struggles in relief role in MLB debut

Carlos Rodon, the White Sox No. 3 overall pick in 2014, made his major-league debut Tuesday, giving up two runs, three hits and three walks in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

"Yeah, a little bit of butterflies. It was fun to be out there, though. Considering," Rodon said afterwards. "[Relief] is something I have to be ready for. No excuses. Maybe overthrowing but no excuses. Just have to be good in that situation."

Rodon gave up a two-run single to pinch hitter Ryan Raburn in the sixth and allowed two more runs in the seventh.

"I threw all over the place but finally found some command," Rodon add.

  • Indians starter Carlos Carrasco fans eight on Tuesday in victory

Indians starter Carlos Carrasco (2-1) struck out eight batters in five innings on Tuesday and took the win against the White Sox.

The lone run he allowed was a first-inning solo shot from Jose Abreu.

"I felt a little bit tight, so they took me out," Carrasco said. "I missed a week or something like that, so they wanted to take care of it and they did the right move."

"I thought he pitched really well," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "I thought he used his off speed especially well tonight."

Carrasco returns to the hill on Sunday in Detroit.

  • Nathan Eovaldi SP | TEX

Yanks' starter Nathan Eovaldi goes seven strong for first win

Starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (1-0) pitched into the eighth inning on Tuesday, allowing one run on eight hits to earn his first win as a Yankee.

Eovaldi struck out four and was never in any trouble until a leadoff double in the eighth inning, at which put the right hander turned it over to the bullpen.

"I moved my arm a little closer to my body in my last bullpen [session], and I was able to keep it there for most of the game," Eovaldi said. '"It really helped my command."

Eovaldi will get his first taste of the Subway Series on Sunday when his next start will be at home against the Mets.

  • Wade Miley SP | CIN

Red Sox pitcher Wade Miley earns first win of the year Tuesday

Red Sox pitcher Wade Miley tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings in Boston's 1-0 win over the Rays Tuesday. Miley scattered three hits with four walks and three strikeouts in his outing.

He ran into a jam in the sixth after walking two consecutive batters to load the bases for Desmond Jennings with two outs before getting the hook. Alexi Ogando came on and finished off the inning, getting Jennings to groundout to short.

Miley, now 1-1 on the year, lowered his ERA to 6.08 in three starts. He will look to keep rolling Sunday against the Orioles.

  • Drew Smyly SP | CHC

Drew Smyly 'definitely' ready, Rays yet to decide on Friday start

Rays pitcher Drew Smyly said Tuesday he's "definitely" ready to make his season debut, but the Rays have yet to decide whether he'll pitch Friday against the Blue Jays, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Smyly threw 70 pitches while racking up 3 2/3 scoreless innings in his most recent rehab outing Sunday as he continues his return from shoulder tendinitis. If the team decides he's not quite ready to return, Smyly would make one more rehab start before likely making his debut next week.

  • Alex Cobb SP | DET

Rays' Alex Cobb scheduled to throw bullpen Friday

Rays pitcher Alex Cobb (forearm) will play catch Tuesday and Wednesday before throwing his first bullpen session Friday, the Tampa Tribune reports.

Cobb has remained limited to playing catch while working his way back from forearm tendinitis. As he'll likely need to go on a rehab assignment before being cleared for a return, it's likely he doesn't make his season debut until May.

  • Nathan Eovaldi SP | TEX

Yankees SP Nathan Eovaldi winless in last six road starts

Yankees starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi heads into Tuesday's start at Detroit with a 2-1 record and 2.96 ERA in eight career starts in March/April. However, he hasn't had a ton of success on the road recently.

Eovaldi is winless in his last six road starts, including Wednesday against the Orioles. He is 0-5 with a 6.23 ERA in that span. It is the longest road losing streak of his career.

The Tigers enter play Tuesday with 70 runs, which is tied for the fourth-highest total in the majors. They are also second in the majors with a .308 batting average against right-handed pitchers.

  • Kevin Gausman SP | CHC

Orioles' Kevin Gausman working more from stretch

Orioles pitcher Kevin Gausman has pitched out of the stretch upon entering his last two appearances despite not having runners on base, and it's a change he made after talking with bullpen coach Dom Chiti, masnsports.com reports.

"I've just been doing it because I talked to Dom about whatever you warm up doing, that's what you continue to do," Gausman said. "I've been coming in with guys on base, so I've been going out of the stretch. Throwing from the windup, my only time doing it before in the game was my warmups, so that's why I did it. Probably my last outing was the first time I did it. It's pretty comfortable, but I definitely need to keep doing it out of the windup just to be ready if I do start one day or if they need a spot starter. Just one of those things you can't just stop doing."

Gausman went two scoreless innings in his most recent appearance without giving up a run, making it his first scoreless appearance of the season.

"It was good," he said. "Obviously, I've given up some home runs in some bad situations, but other than that I feel like I've been pitching well, so to finally have the results to go with it was definitely nice."

Gausman indicated he's stretched out enough to transition to starter when needed.

"I think I still probably could," he said. "I would probably need one or two bullpens, and then maybe one extended start. But physically it's really not that big of a difference just because I started the whole spring and I've done it most of my career."

Gausman has posted a 6.75 ERA and 6:5 K:BB ratio in eight innings out of the bullpen.

  • Kyle Gibson SP | BAL

Twins P Kyle Gibson loses to Royals for first time in career

Twins pitcher Kyle Gibson went five innings and gave up four runs — three earned — in Monday's 7-1 loss to the Royals.

This was the first time in his career that Gibson lost to the Royals. He entered this game having won each of the four games he's played against Kansas City. This time, though, the Royals were able to get the best of him with a three-run sixth inning.

Yet to record an out, Gibson gave up a two-run double to Kendrys Morales before being pulled.

Gibson gave up four hits and walked four batters. He did not record a strikeout.

Gibson's next scheduled start is projected for Sunday against the Mariners.

  • James Paxton SP | BOS

Lloyd McClendon says mechanics not Mariners P James Paxton's problem

Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon dismissed the notion that starting pitcher James Paxton’s struggles are connected to his delivery, per MLB.com.

“No, I don’t see that and I’m not going to talk about Paxton,” McClendon said. "I don’t want to hear anything about mechanics. That’s over with. He’s got to pitch.”

Paxton was shelled in his start on Sunday, allowing seven runs on nine hits in 2 2/3 innings, and now has a 5.40 ERA on the season.
