Jose Quintana strikes out six in no-decision

White Sox pitcher Jose Quintana did not factor into the decision in his team's 6-5 loss to the Indians Wednesday, giving up three earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six in five innings.

Quintana remains at 5-3 while owning a 3.62 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 105:39 K:BB ratio. He's scheduled to face the Yankees Monday.

Orioles place Jason Hammel on 15-day disabled list

The Orioles placed pitcher Jason Hammel on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, retroactive to July 29, due to a right flexor mass strain. Hammel, who is expected to have an MRI Thursday, is feeling tightness in his forearm.

Hammel went 0-4 with a 5.52 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and 19:14 K:BB ratio in 29 1/3 innings over five July starts.

  • Justin Verlander earns 11th win in wild outing

Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander moved to 11-8 with a victory Wednesday over Washington.

Verlander allowed just one run on four hits over six innings, but had to work around five walks. He struck out and induced a sharp 12 swinging strikes on 103 pitches. His ERA is down to 3.88.

Manager expects Alex Cobb back in mid-August

Rays manager Joe Maddon said Wednesday he expects starting pitcher Alex Cobb (concussion) to return in mid-August. Cobb is expected to make the first of two rehab starts Saturday for Class A Port Charlotte.

Alex Cobb to begin rehab Saturday

Rays pitcher Alex Cobb threw 50 pitches during a simulated game Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Times reports. Cobb reported everything went well.

The starter, who has been out with concussion-related issues, is expected to make the first of two rehab starts Saturday in Port Charlotte.

  • Kevin Gausman SP | CHC

Kevin Gausman 'still learning to pitch'

Orioles starter Kevin Gausman said he's "still learning to pitch" in Triple-A, according to MASN.

Gausman was sent back to Triple-A in early July, and is being stretched out as a starter. While he's struggled in his first two starts at the level, Gausman said he's been a little unlucky. "People look at the numbers, and if they're not at the game, they don't really get a feel for what happened," Gausman said. He added that he's noticed he'll get ground balls in crucial situations that will roll just out of reach of his fielders.

The 22-year-old pitcher also admitted that there are still plenty of things he needs to work on. "I've given up a lot of two-strike hits. That's something I've struggled with a little as a starter, something I need to be a little better at," he said. Gausman believes being more aggressive should help.

Gausman had a 6.21 ERA in 33 1/3 innings in the majors.

  • Alex Cobb SP | DET

Alex Cobb to throw simulated game Tuesday

Rays pitcher Alex Cobb will toss a simulated game Tuesday, and hopes to make a rehab start Saturday, according to the Tampa Bay Tribune.

Cobb has been out since June 15 with concussion related issues. He's also dealt with leg and blister issues, which have pushed back his rehab. Cobb had a 3.01 ERA in 83 2/3 innings prior to the injury.

  • Chris Sale SP | ATL

White Sox will not trade Chris Sale

The White Sox have been rumored to be willing to part with a number of players, but pitcher Chris Sale will remain with the club, according to FoxSports.com.

Sale hasn't really been mentioned in trade talks, but would have brought back the biggest return for the Sox. By keeping Sale, the team has decided he's one of the pieces they will build around. Through 137 innings, Sale has a 2.69 ERA.

  • Jason Hammel SP | TEX

Jason Hammel getting no help from offense

Orioles pitcher Jason Hammel hasn't won a game since May 27, but it's not entirely his fault.

Hammel's performance has been up and down, making him partially responsible for his struggles. At the same time, the Orioles offense has gone cold when he's been on the mound. During his first 11 starts, the Orioles scored 7.09 runs for Hammel. That's dropped to just 2.7 in his last 10 starts. Even in Hammel's good starts, he's not getting enough production from his team to earn wins. Hammel will attempt to break that streak Friday against the Mariners.

  • Kyle Gibson SP | BAL

Kyle Gibson hit hard by M's

Minnesota rookie starter Kyle Gibson had trouble again against the Mariners as the Twins dropped the finale of their three-game series against Seattle, 6-4, on Sunday afternoon at Safeco Field.

Gibson served up home runs to Michael Saunders and Nick Franklin in the fourth inning. The young right-hander was tagged for five runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three over five innings pitched for his third loss of the season.

Gibson allowed nine earned runs combined over his last three starts. He is scheduled to make his next start Saturday at home against the Astros.
