  • Slade Cecconi SP | CLE

Diamondbacks' Slade Cecconi: Joins big club

The Diamondbacks recalled Cecconi from Triple-A Reno on Sunday, and he will start against the Giants.

Cecconi was unable to make the big-league roster out of spring training. He had a good outing in his last start with Reno on April 16, allowing one run on five hits and one walk while striking out six batters over six frames. Cecconi appeared in seven games for the Diamondbacks last season and posted a 4.33 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 20:4 K:BB over 27 innings. To make room for Cecconi, the Diamondbacks optioned right-hander Justin Martinez to Triple-A Reno. Cecconi will be thrown right into the fire, as he will start Sunday for Merrill Kelly (undisclosed).

  • Merrill Kelly SP | ARI

Diamondbacks' Merrill Kelly: Won't start Sunday

Kelly (undisclosed) was scratched from Sunday's game against the Giants, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

Kelly was set to make his fifth start of the season Sunday. It's unclear why Kelly was scratched, though Piecoro speculates that its due to an injury. Kelly has gone 2-0 over his first four starts of the year, posting a 2.19 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 21:6 K:BB over 24.2 innings. In Kelly's place, Slade Cecconi, who was called up from Triple-A Reno on Sunday, will get the start.

  • DL Hall RP | MIL

Brewers' DL Hall: Placed on IL

The Brewers placed Hall on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to a left knee sprain.

Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel notes that Hall sustained the injury on a bunt play in the second inning of Saturday's game against the Cardinals. Hall has failed to last four innings in each of his last two appearances, and he has a 7.71 ERA, 2.27 WHIP and 13:10 K:BB over 16.1 innings this season. With Hall on the IL, the Brewers recalled southpaw Jared Koenig from Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding move. Bryse Wilson, who threw 3.2 innings as the Brewers' opening pitcher against the Padres on April 17, is a candidate to replace Hall in the starting rotation, per Adam McCalvy of MLB.com.

  • Noah Davis SP | PIT

Rockies' Noah Davis: Serving as 27th man Sunday

The Rockies added Davis to the active roster to be the 27th man for Sunday's doubleheader against the Mariners.

Davis was called up for Saturday's game, though he did not make an appearance and was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque after the contest. He'll stick around with the Rockies for Sunday's doubleheader and be available should the team need an additional arm. In four starts with Triple-A Albuquerque this season, Davis has an 0-2 record with a 7.13 ERA, 1.92 WHIP and 21:10 K:BB over 17.2 innings.

  • Dakota Hudson SP | LAA

Rockies' Dakota Hudson: Season-high five walks in loss

Hudson (0-4) took the loss against Seattle on Saturday, allowing four runs on seven hits and five walks over four innings while striking out one.

Hudson left a sinker over the plate on the first pitch in the top of the second and watched as Cal Raleigh sent it into the stands in left field. The right-hander would then allow a run in each of the next three frames, with the last one coming home after he was relieved by Victor Vodnik in the fifth. Hudson has allowed at least three runs in three of his four starts to open the season and now carries a dismal 12:11 K:BB on the campaign after issuing a season-high five walks in Saturday's loss.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Draws second start

Vasquez is scheduled to start Thursday's game against the Rockies at Coors Field.

Though Vasquez had struggled over his three starts with Triple-A El Paso prior to being called up Saturday, he held his own in his 2024 MLB debut, limiting the Blue Jays to one earned run on four hits and one walk while striking out three over five innings in a losing effort. With Yu Darvish (neck) set to miss at least one more turn through the rotation while he's on the injured list, Vasquez will benefit from another start with the Padres.

  • Reds' Nick Martinez: Throws multiple relief innings

Martinez allowed two hits and struck out two over three scoreless innings, picking up his first hold in Saturday's 7-5 win over the Angels.

Martinez made his second relief appearance since being removed from the starting rotation. He's thrown multiple innings in each outing, allowing one run on five hits while striking out five over seven innings. That multi-inning relief role is one in which Martinez thrived as a member of the Padres in 2023.

  • Charlie Morton SP | ATL

Braves' Charlie Morton: Logs first quality start

Morton (2-0) earned the win Saturday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings against the Rangers. He struck out four.

The only damage against Morton came in the second inning after the right-hander allowed two singles and a walk in the first three at-bats to open the frame. He would allow two runs in the inning before going on to retire 12 of the next 15 batters he faced in the contest. It marked Morton's first quality start of the season, though he's now allowed at least two runs in three consecutive outings, posting a 16:8 K:BB over that stretch.

  • Kyle Freeland SP | COL

Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Won't need surgery

Freeland (elbow) won't need surgery but is expected to miss about 4-to-6 weeks, MLB.com reports.

Freeland is still resting the injury and could be out until late June, though it's a positive that he'll avoid surgery. He struggled mightily until being sidelined, as he posted a 13.21 ERA and 2.55 WHIP across 15.2 innings. Peter Lambert has entered the rotation in Freeland's place.

  • Reds' Graham Ashcraft: Grabs third win

Ashcraft (3-1) earned the win over the Angels on Saturday, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four over five-plus innings.

Three of the five runs against Ashcraft scored in the sixth inning as the right-hander ran out of steam -- he allowed a two-run homer to Miguel Sano in the sixth and reliever Nick Martinez allowed an inherited runner to score. The bullpen was scoreless from that point and in turn secured Ashcraft his third win already in the early going. He doesn't miss a ton of bats -- Ashcraft got a modest nine swings and misses Saturday -- and as a result he should be considered a volatile option best deployed judiciously by fantasy mangers. He tentatively lines up for a home start against the Phillies next week.
