Jose Quintana SP | COL
Cubs' Jose Quintana: Out with lat inflammation
Quintana was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with left lat inflammation, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.
Quintana presumably suffered the injury during Sunday's contest, as he pitched three innings of one-run relief after Tyler Chatwood (forearm) left with an injury. The severity of the injury remains unclear, but it's poor timing for the Cubs given Chatwood's injury and the upcoming doubleheader this weekend. Adbert Alzolay is a likely candidate to enter the rotation in the meantime.

Carlos Martinez SP | SF
Cardinals' Carlos Martinez: Won't return this weekend
Martinez (illness) won't return from the COVID-19 injured list until sometime next week, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Martinez was part of the Cardinals' coronavirus outbreak that shut down the team early in the season. He's been cleared to resume baseball activities for over two weeks but evidently still needs a bit more time before he's ready to go. He's expected to pitch as a starter once he's activated.

Joe Musgrove SP | SD
Pirates' Joe Musgrove: Officially activated ahead of start
Musgrove (triceps) was activated as expected ahead of his scheduled start against the Cubs on Wednesday.
Musgrove has missed nearly a month with triceps inflammation. He threw just two innings in a simulated game late last week, so he's unlikely to go too deep into the game Wednesday. Carson Fulmer was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

David Peterson SP | CHC
Mets' David Peterson: Moving to 'pen for now
Peterson will be available out of the bullpen Wednesday and is not scheduled to start either of the Mets' next two games, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
Peterson owns a strong 3.51 ERA through the first five starts of his big-league career, though his 18.9 percent strikeout rate and 10.4 percent walk rate are both fairly poor. He wasn't great in his first start back from shoulder inflammation Friday, allowing three runs in four innings against the Yankees. It's possible the rookie moves back into the rotation at some point in the near future, pushing either Robert Gsellman or Seth Lugo, who began the year in the pen, back to their original roles, but it will be Gsellman, rather than Peterson, who starts against the Yankees on Thursday.

Brandon Woodruff SP | MIL
Brewers' Brandon Woodruff: Returning Saturday
Woodruff (personal) is slated to return from the paternity list to start Saturday's game against the Indians, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Assuming Woodruff experiences no complications with the COVID-19 intake testing protocol upon joining the Brewers in Cleveland, he'll be able to stay on turn in the rotation. He left the team to witness the birth of his child immediately after completing his start against the Pirates this past weekend.

Walker Buehler SP | SD
Dodgers' Walker Buehler: Activated ahead of start
Buehler (hand) was activated off the injured list as expected Wednesday ahead of his scheduled start against Arizona, Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Buehler will wind up missing just one turn in the rotation due to a blister. His 4.32 ERA through his first five starts is worse than his typical standard, though he's coming off an 11-strikeout, one-run outing against the Rockies his last time out. Scott Alexander was optioned in a corresponding move.

Edward Cabrera SP | CHC
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Throwing off mound
Cabrera (arm) has been cleared to resume throwing off the mound, but his MLB debut is not imminent, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
The Marlins were buyers at the trade deadline and have not been shy about promoting top prospects this year, so if they think Cabrera can help them down the stretch, he could be an option later in September, most likely as a reliever. However, as one of the organization's most prized arms, Cabrera figures to be handled very carefully. Reports surfaced in late July that Cabrera was dealing with a minor right arm injury.

Jose Urena SP | LAA
Marlins' Jose Urena: Could join rotation Monday
Urena (COVID-19) could be activated from the injured list to start Monday's game against the Braves, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
After testing positive for COVID-19 in late July, Urena was cleared to resume working out at the Marlins' alternate training site Aug. 15. Though the right-hander has seemingly built his arm back up following the shutdown, he's been sitting in limbo at the alternate site since Miami didn't have a spot available for him in the rotation. Urena looks poised to get a start in the near future, however, as the Marlins will have an opening after Elieser Hernandez exited his outing Tuesday against the Blue Jays with right lat soreness. The Marlins haven't decided whether Hernandez will require an IL stint, but manager Don Mattingly already suggested Hernandez won't be ready to go when his next turn comes up Monday.

Ian Anderson RP | ATL
Braves' Ian Anderson: Strong effort in win
Anderson (2-0) picked up the win in Tuesday's 10-3 victory over the Red Sox, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out eight.
While Atlanta's bats gave him plenty of run support, Anderson didn't need most of it as he held Boston in check over 96 pitches (61 strikes). The rookie has been a godsend for the team's banged-up rotation, delivering quality starts in both his trips to the mound so far with a 2.25 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB through 12 innings. Anderson will look for his third straight win in Sunday's home outing against the Nationals.

Jon Gray SP | TEX
Rockies' Jon Gray: Shelled by San Francisco
Gray (2-4) took the loss against the Giants on Tuesday, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits while striking out one.
It was an ugly day overall for Colorado's pitching staff, which yielded 23 total runs and saw its most effective effort come from a catcher (Drew Butera, who allowed one run in 1.2 innings). Gray took much of the damage, surrendering three runs in the first frame, two more in the second and another pair in the third before his outing mercifully ended. Four of the nine hits Gray gave up went for extra bases, including a pair of home runs off the bat of Alex Dickerson. Gray was coming off a strong start in his previous outing, but he has struggled overall in 2020, posting a 6.69 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 39 innings. Once a reliable source of punchouts -- he averaged at least one whiff per inning in each of the past four seasons -- the right-hander has seen his strikeout rate topple to a career-low 13.4 percent this season due, in part, to losing a couple ticks off his fastball and slider. Gray will try to get back on the right track when he faces the Padres in San Diego on Monday.
