  • David Peterson SP | CHC

Mets' David Peterson: May get opportunity

The injury to Noah Syndergaard (elbow) could open up a role for Peterson later in the season, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Manager Luis Rojas called Peterson the team's seventh starter earlier in spring training, and he may have a greater opportunity to reach the big leagues in 2020 in light of Syndergaard undergoing Tommy John surgery. After posting a 4.19 ERA and 122:37 K:BB across 116 innings with Double-A Binghamton in 2019, Peterson flashed increased velocity in spring training. He was reassigned to minor-league camp before spring training was suspended and will likely begin the season with Triple-A Syracuse.

  • Mets' Michael Wacha: Rotation spot opens up

Wacha has a clear path to a rotation spot after Noah Syndergaard was diagnosed with a torn UCL on Tuesday, Jim Bowden of The Athletic reports.

Syndergaard will undergo Tommy John surgery and will miss the entirety of the 2020 season. Wacha had looked like potentially the odd man out in a battle with Rick Porcello and Steven Matz for the Mets' final two rotation spots, but all three should now be expected to win jobs.

  • Mets' Noah Syndergaard: Needs Tommy John surgery

Syndergaard was diagnosed with a torn UCL in his right elbow and will undergo Tommy John surgery Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Syndergaard reportedly experienced some soreness in spring training, though it didn't show up in his numbers, as he pitched quite well in Grapefruit League action, posting an 11:0 K:BB in eight innings of work. He'll now miss the entirety of the 2020 season and a fair portion of the 2021 campaign as well. The injury presumably means that both Rick Porcello and Michael Wacha will win rotation spots for the Mets once the season eventually opens.

  • Cal Quantrill RP | TEX

Padres' Cal Quantrill: Could make squad as reliever

Quantrill could fill a swingman role out of the bullpen this season, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

While Quantrill was battling Joey Lucchesi for the fifth spot in the starting rotation before the suspension of spring training, Lucchesi is considered the favorite for the role due to his considerable edge in experience. That could leave Quantrill to fill a role as a long reliever or spot starter as the Padres may be set on keeping him on the big-league roster after a strong spring in which the right-hander allowed only one run across seven Cactus League innings. Quantrill's likelihood of claiming a roster spot was no doubt boosted by the announcement that Andres Munoz underwent Tommy John surgery Friday and will be lost for the entire 2020 campaign.

  • Hunter Greene SP | CIN

Reds' Hunter Greene: Throwing bullpen sessions

Greene (elbow) has been throwing bullpen sessions and said on his personal Twitter account that he is feeling "stronger and better than ever before."

He is recovering from Tommy John surgery that he underwent April 9, 2019. Given the fact that the minor-league season may not begin until June or July, Greene could be fully recovered by the time games resume. He should open the year at High-A.

  • Braves' Touki Toussaint: Heading to Triple-A

Toussaint was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday.

The 23-year-old was competing for a spot in Atlanta's starting rotation but once the season resumes, he'll begin 2020 in the minors. Toussaint appeared in 24 games (one start) for the Braves last season and had a 5.62 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 13.1 percent walk rate over 41.2 innings

  • Brewers' Freddy Peralta: Will have big-league role

Peralta will have a spot on the Brewers' 26-man roster when play resumes, according to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com.

It remains to be seen if Peralta will open in the rotation or in a relief role, but the five-year contract he signed with the Brewers in late February all but guarantees he will pitch for the big club when action gets underway. Peralta allowed six earned runs over 12 innings (4.50 ERA) this spring, but opposing hitters had a tough time making contact against him, managing just six hits while being rung up 15 times (11.3 K/9).

  • Eric Lauer SP | LAD

Brewers' Eric Lauer: Will be healthy when action resumes

Lauer (shoulder) should be healthy when play resumes, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Lauer was going to miss the beginning of the regular season due to some shoulder soreness that popped up in early March, but the injury was always considered minor, and with games not expected to take place until at least May he has ample time to recover. Lauer has remained at the Brewers' spring training complex in order to focus on his rehab, so barring a setback he should be good to go when players return to the field.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Cut from big-league camp

The Cardinals optioned Woodford to Triple-A Memphis on Thursday.

Woodford was a long-shot candidate for the final spot in the Cardinals' Opening Day rotation, so it comes as little surprise that he was sent packing in the early round of cuts. The right-hander will prepare for a repeat season at Memphis after posting a 4.15 ERA and 131:75 K:BB in 151.2 innings with the affiliate in 2091.

  • Mason Denaburg SP | WAS

Nationals' Mason Denaburg: To be handled carefully this year

Denaburg (shoulder) will be managed cautiously this year, Byron Kerr of MASNsports.com reports.

He pitched through a shoulder injury in 2019 and it led to horrible results (7.52 ERA, 1.82 WHIP). The goal in 2020 will be for Denaburg to have some success on a light workload before the training wheels come off in 2021. He will likely be assigned to Low-A for his age-20 season whenever the minor-league season gets underway.
