  • Zac Gallen SP | ARI

Marlins' Zac Gallen: Strong in big-league debut

Gallen allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out six over five innings Thursday against the Cardinals. He didn't factor into the decision.

Gallen looked sharp in his first big-league action, though a high pitch count (99 pitches) forced him to exit the contest after five quality innings. His chief blemish of the night came in the fifth inning, when he allowed an RBI double to tie the game. Considering that Gallen turned in a solid performance, he should have a good chance to stick in the rotation while Pablo Lopez (shoulder) returns to health.

  • Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Average in return from IL

Wainwright allowed three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out six over 5.1 innings Thursday night against the Marlins. He didn't factor into the decision.

Wainwright was reinstated from the 10-day injured list prior to Thursday's start after missing one turn through the rotation due to a hamstring injury. The Marlins struck first in this one with a run in the fourth, and Wainwright would allow two more runs in the sixth before getting yanked. He fired 56 of 86 pitches for strikes and induced six groundouts compared to four flyouts. The 37-year-old right-hander has posted a 4.50 ERA and 1.39 WHIP with 67 punchouts over 76 innings this season.

  • Robbie Ray SP | SD

Diamondbacks' Robbie Ray: Settles for no-decision

Ray struck out nine and allowed three runs on four hits with five walks across six innings during a no-decision against the Rockies on Thursday.

While it wasn't an overly impressive stat line, it was Ray's third quality start in his last four outings. He also struck out at least nine for the third during that stretch. However, the Diamondbacks bullpen blew the lead in the ninth, so Ray settled for a no-decision. He is 5-4 with a 3.87 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 115 strikeouts in 88.1 innings this season. Ray will make his next start Tuesday at home against the Dodgers.

  • Dodgers' Ross Stripling: Expected to move into rotation

Stripling is expected to take Rich Hill's (forearm) spot in the starting rotation, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

Julio Urias drew the start Thursday night against the Giants, but it appears as though Stripling is in line to take over with Hill likely facing a 3-to-4-week absence. "I think he's earned that opportunity," stated Andrew Friedman, the Dodgers' president of baseball operations. Assuming Stripling does move into the starting rotation, his next outing would line up for Tuesday in Arizona.

  • Johnny Cueto SP | LAA

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Tossing side session over weekend

Cueto (elbow) will throw a bullpen session over the weekend, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Cueto completed his first bullpen session at the end of April, though the Giants continue to take it easy with the right-hander. He remains on track to return from the injured list by September if all goes according to plan.

  • Rich Hill SP | KC

Dodgers' Rich Hill: Facing extended absence

Hill (forearm) said it will likely be 3-to-4 weeks before he can resume throwing, Alanna Rizzo of Spectrum SportsNet LA reports.

The lefty was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday after leaving Wednesday's start with what has since been diagnosed as a flexor tendon strain. He received an injection to help facilitate the healing process. That process will be a long one, and after the shutdown period, Hill will likely require an additional five or six weeks to ramp up before potentially rejoining the major-league team. Hill himself seemed unsure about his chances of pitching again this season, saying he feels it's "still a possibility."

  • Rich Hill SP | KC

Dodgers' Rich Hill: Dealing with flexor strain

Hill was diagnosed with a flexor strain, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports.

Hill exited Wednesday's game due to forearm tightness, and a subsequent MRI revealed the veteran southpaw is dealing with a flexor strain. He had a PRP injection Thursday to help the healing. While the issue isn't expected to require surgery, per Vassegh, Hill likely won't be able to resume throwing for 3-to-4 weeks. He's still hoping to pitch again this season, though he has a lengthy recovery process ahead of him.

  • Rich Hill SP | KC

Dodgers' Rich Hill: Lands on IL

Hill (forearm) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.

This was expected after Hill exited Wednesday's game with a left forearm strain. He's expected to undergo an MRI on Thursday to determine the severity of the strain, at which point a timetable for his return will hopefully come into focus. JT Chargois was summoned from Triple-A Oklahoma City in a corresponding roster move.

  • Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Activated ahead of start

Wainwright (hamstring) was activated from the 10-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Thursday against the Marlins.

Wainwright wound up missing just one start while on the injured list with a bout of hamstring soreness. The veteran right-hander compiled a 4.46 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 61:31 K:BB in 70.2 innings (13 starts) prior to landing on the shelf. Daniel Ponce de Leon was sent back to the minors in a corresponding move.

  • Cardinals' Carlos Martinez: No move to rotation planned

Manager Mike Shildt said Wednesday that the Cardinals don't currently have any plans for Martinez to build up his arm in preparation for a return to the rotation, Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. "Carlos Martinez...the 2013 version? Sure. But we're in 2019. Different circumstances," Shildt said. "I can't say [a move to the rotation] will absolutely not happen. I'll never rule it out, but it's not in the forefront of my mentality."

When he returned from the 10-day injured list May 17, Martinez was hopeful to transition from the bullpen into the rotation after the All-Star break, but the right-hander's shoulder issues over the past two seasons may be a factor in the Cardinals' reluctance to explore a role change. In just over a month back with the big club, Martinez has already emerged as a key late-inning weapon for St. Louis, posting a 3.38 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over 12 appearances while collecting two saves and a hold.
