  • Corbin Burnes SP | ARI

Brewers' Corbin Burnes: Sent to minors

Burnes was optioned to Triple-A San Antonio on Friday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Manager Craig Counsell was noncommittal about Burnes' next start after Wednesday's outing, so it's not a major surprise to see him headed to Triple-A. The 24-year-old has a 10.70 ERA and 2.15 WHIP, and gave up a whopping 11 home runs in his four starts (17.2 innings). He did record 24 strikeouts, but that was mitigated somewhat by eight walks. The Brewers undoubtedly will hope Burnes can iron things out at San Antonio and return to the big-league rotation at some point this season, but if the club adds starting pitching via trade or free agency he could also resurface in the bullpen, where he had success in 2018.

  • Braves' Touki Toussaint: Scheduled start postponed

Toussaint won't start Friday against Cleveland as the game has been postponed due to rain.

The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Saturday. The Braves haven't yet announced their plans for their rotation going forward, but it's likely that Toussaint will start one of Saturday's games.

  • Sixto Sanchez SP | MIA

Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Flashing heat in extended spring

Sanchez was touching 98 mph with his fastball during a two-inning stint in an intrasquad game at the Marlins' spring training complex Thursday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

The right-hander was the big prize from the Phillies in the J.T. Realmuto trade, and while the Marlins have brought him along slowly to begin the season. Sanchez flashed his impressive upside during his 24 pitches Thursday. He's set to make his first start for Double-A Jacksonville on May 2, but after throwing only 46.2 innings in 2018, Miami will keep a very close eye on his workload this year.

  • Brewers' Adrian Houser: Could fill rotation opening

Houser is 1-0 with a 1.10 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and 18:2 K:BB in 16.1 innings over three starts with Triple-A San Antonio.

Houser began the season in the minors, but he may not be there for long, as his early performance gives him a strong case to fill the opening in the Brewers' rotation created by the placement of starter Freddy Peralta (shoulder) on the injured list.

  • Jose Quintana SP | COL

Cubs' Jose Quintana: Start pushed back to Tuesday

Quintana's next start will come Tuesday against the Dodgers instead of Sunday against the Diamondbacks as originally scheduled, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.

Tyler Chatwood will make a spot start Sunday, giving the Cubs an extra righty against the righty-heavy Diamondbacks and an extra lefty against the lefty-heavy Dodgers. The change of plans costs Quintana a two-start week and gives him a tougher opponent for his next start, though it likely means he'll gain a two-start week next period.

  • Chris Paddack RP | TEX

Padres' Chris Paddack: Takes loss despite quality start

Paddack (0-1) took the loss against the Reds on Thursday, giving up three earned runs on three hits over six innings, striking out five and walking one as the Padres fell 4-1.

Paddack tossed a quality start, but his teammates could only muster up a single run of support, and he eventually was tagged with the loss. Nonetheless, the 23-year-old is still off to a great start, as he's sporting a 2.25 ERA, a 0.80 WHIP and a solid 21:7 K:BB over 20 innings, while holding opponents to a .134 average. The right-hander will take the mound next at home against the Mariners on Wednesday.

  • Zach Eflin SP | BAL

Phillies' Zach Eflin: Falls to 2-2

Eflin (2-2) took the loss against the Rockies on Thursday, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits over six innings, striking out two and walking three as the Phillies fell 6-2.

Eflin wasn't particularly sharp in recording two strikeouts against three free passes, but he still managed a quality start in a losing effort. It was a welcome rebound performance after he was blown up for six earned on 10 hits by the Marlins in his last start after two lights-out outings to start the year. The 25-year-old now has a 3.68 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP through 22 innings on the season.

  • Kyle Freeland SP | COL

Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Picks up second win

Freeland (2-3) picked up the win against the Phillies on Thursday, giving up just two hits and no runs over six strong innings, striking out seven and walking none in Colorado's 6-2 victory.

It was a stellar effort from the left-hander, who bagged his second win of the season while lowering his ERA to 4.23 through 27.2 innings to go along with a 30:10 K:BB. His exit after 86 pitches was due to a blister that popped up during his last start, per Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post, but his removal may have been a precautionary measure with the Rockies leading. If the blister doesn't cause him to miss a turn in the rotation, Freeland is slated to take mound next at home against the Nationals on Tuesday.

  • Julio Urias SP | LAD

Dodgers' Julio Urias: Takes advantage of final start

Urias (1-1) picked up the win after allowing one hit and two walks while striking out nine over six shutout innings in Thursday's game against Milwaukee.

Urias brought his best stuff to the ballpark for his final start before moving back to the bullpen, fanning a season-high nine batters. He helped himself by firing first-pitch strikes to 14 of 21 batters faced and was ultimately pulled after six strong innings with 91 pitches. With Clayton Kershaw back from the injured list, Urias will become a reliever for the foreseeable future.

  • Zach Davies SP | WAS

Brewers' Zach Davies: Tosses another stellar outing

Davies allowed three hits and three walks while striking out two over five scoreless innings Thursday in a no-decision against the Dodgers.

Davies found himself in a few jams Thursday night but made it through five scoreless innings with 97 pitches, 57 for strikes. He often had to battle from behind in the count, firing first-pitch strikes to eight of the 20 batters he faced. The 26-year-old has puzzled the Dodgers over his past two starts, allowing just one run over 12 innings while striking out eight.
