  • Jordan Lyles RP | KC

    Padres' Jordan Lyles: Resumes throwing

Lyles played catch Tuesday and is considered day-to-day while he recovers from right forearm inflammation, Bill Center of MLB.com reports.

The injury forced Lyles to the disabled list June 24 and will prevent him from making a second straight start Wednesday against the Athletics, with Luis Perdomo set to take the hill in his stead. Given that he has yet to resume mound work, Lyles seems likely to miss a third straight turn through the rotation early next week, though a return shortly before the All-Star break remains feasible. Over his eight starts this season, Lyles has posted a 4.79 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 47 frames.

  • Seth Lugo SP | KC

Mets' Seth Lugo: Not in mix for spot start Monday

Mets manager Mickey Callaway said Lugo is not under consideration for a spot start for Monday's doubleheader against the Phillies, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. "I would like to keep Lugo in the bullpen," Callaway said. "We saw the benefits of that [Sunday against the Marlins]," referring to when Lugo tossed 1.2 scoreless innings in his return to a relief role.

Lugo has turned in a credible 3.52 ERA in his five starts this season, but Callaway evidently places more value in the flexibility the right-hander offers out of the bullpen as a multi-inning setup ace or occasional long man. Triple-A Las Vegas starters Chris Flexen and P.J. Conlon now look like the leading candidates to start one half of Monday's twin bill, with Corey Oswalt in line to start the other game. The lack of a consistent pitching schedule out of the bullpen dampens Lugo's fantasy outlook, but he'll at least be a solid ratio stabilizer for owners in deep mixed or NL-only leagues in weeks where attractive streaming options aren't available on the wire.

  • Joe Musgrove SP | SD

Pirates' Joe Musgrove: Hopeful to miss one start

Musgrove said that he's hopeful to miss only one start due to the right index finger infection that resulted in his placement on the disabled list Tuesday, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.

The Pirates will hand Clay Holmes the start in Wednesday's series finale against the Dodgers in Musgrove's stead after the infection resulted in swelling that made it painful for the latter to play catch. It's a disappointing setback for Musgrove after he submitted one of his best starts of the season his last time out June 29 against the Padres, during which he tossed seven shutout innings and struck out five. The Pirates will likely wait and see how Musgrove responds to antibiotic treatment over the next few days before determining if he can realistically take the hill for his next turn through the rotation, which would come July 10 against the Nationals.

  • Yu Darvish SP | SD

Cubs' Yu Darvish: Next step still unclear

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Wednesday that Darvish (shoulder) is feeling better, but it's uncertain when the right-hander will be cleared to resume throwing again, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.

Now that Darvish is five days removed from the cortisone shot he required to address inflammation in his throwing shoulder, it was expected that the Cubs would provide an update Wednesday on the next step for his rehab. With Maddon not offering up any news on that front, it appears Darvish is still in a holding pattern with his recovery from the injury, making it increasingly unlikely that he'll be ready to return from the 10-day disabled list before the All-Star break. Maddon has stressed that having Darvish healthy and at peak form in the second half ahead of a potential playoff run is the club's top priority, so expect the Cubs to continue taking things slowly with their big offseason free-agent pickup.

  • Jose Urena SP | LAA

Marlins' Jose Urena: Reinstated from DL

The Marlins activated Urena (shoulder) from the 10-day disabled list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Rays, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

After a two-week absence due to an inflamed right shoulder, Urena will re-enter the rotation in place of Sandy Alcantara (infection), who shifts to the DL less than a week after his first MLB start. Urena didn't head out on a minor-league rehab assignment prior to being activated, but he shouldn't face any limitations with his pitch count in his return to action. In fact, manager Don Mattingly may actually prefer if Urena works deep into Wednesday's game after Miami used seven relievers in Tuesday's 16-inning loss.

  • Rockies' Antonio Senzatela: Tosses seven scoreless innings in win

Senzatela (3-1) tossed seven scoreless innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Giants, allowing three hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Senzatela was brilliant in his first big-league start since April 27, notching five separate 1-2-3 innings and scattering three singles as he stifled the visitors. He avoided hard contact for the most part, inducing nine groundball outs mixed in with some weak flyballs. Perhaps most importantly, Senzatela was economical with his pitches, needing just 95 to make it through seven frames and thus providing the bullpen with some much-needed rest. Though his previous stint with the club was awful, Senzatela has earned another turn in the rotation for now.

  • Zack Greinke SP | KC

Diamondbacks' Zack Greinke: Collects ninth win

Greinke (9-5) allowed two runs on seven hits in a win over the Cardinals on Tuesday, striking out four and walking one in 6.2 innings.

Greinke surrendered just one extra-base hit in Tuesday's outing and threw 64 of 95 pitches for strikes. Greinke had gone his previous two starts without walking a batter, and overall has only walked 20 in 109.2 innings this season. The veteran right-hander has a 3.36 ERA and 1.11 WHIP, and his 112 strikeouts are good for fifth among NL pitchers. He will next take on the Padres in a start at home.

  • Jack Flaherty SP | DET

Cardinals' Jack Flaherty: Strikes out seven in loss

Flaherty (3-4) struck out seven and walked one in a loss to Arizona on Tuesday, allowing four runs on four hits in six innings.

Flaherty held the Diamondbacks to one run through four innings, but then gave up a three-run homer to Paul Goldschmidt in the fifth to lose a 2-1 lead. Despite the loss Flaherty still holds an excellent 3.19 ERA and 1.05 WHIP to go along with an 80:19 K:BB in 67.2 innings. He's gone winless in his last four starts and will look to even his record in his next start against the Giants in San Francisco.

  • Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw: Beats Pirates for second win

Kershaw (2-4) allowed two runs on four hits while striking out two over six innings in a win over the Pirates on Tuesday. He did not issue a walk.

Kershaw was efficient, completing the six frames on 74 pitches. The Dodgers' offense did its part against Ivan Nova and helped Kershaw get into the win column for the first time since April 15. Kershaw has built up gradually since skipping a rehab assignment and may be limited again next week against the Padres in his fourth start back from the disabled list, but his restrictions figure to be mostly lifted from there. While his strikeout rate is trending in the wrong direction, there is hope that with improved health he can still be a big difference maker for fantasy owners in the second half.

  • Reds' Anthony DeSclafani: Mediocre against White Sox

DeSclafani gave up five runs on six hits and one walk while striking out five over 5.1 innings against the White Sox on Tuesday. He did not factor in the decision.

The two rebuilding clubs combined to score 20 runs in this one, so neither starter factored in the decision. DeSclafani and his counterpart, Lucas Giolito, failed to prevent runs at acceptable clips, but the Reds' hurler was the better starter by a slight margin. Thursday's off day may allow DeSclafani to get a two-start week next week, with the first start coming Monday in Cleveland and the second coming in St. Louis.
