  • Patrick Corbin SP | TOR

Diamondbacks' Patrick Corbin: Looks hittable in no-decision against Mets

Corbin yielded four runs on nine hits (two homers) over six innings in Wednesday's extra-inning win over the Mets. He struck out six and walked one.

After opening the season with a 2.29 ERA despite a 1.27 WHIP over his first six outings, Corbin looked to be in for a course correction, and it's hit him hard -- he's been ripped for 16 runs over his last 16 innings spanning three starts. Sure, pitching in Arizona does him no favors, but he's actually been far worse on the road. The lefty's 4.35 FIP seems to indicate that his 4.38 ERA is pretty reflective of his true level at this point in time; it wouldn't be surprising to see him improve as the season goes on, as we've seen him be better than this before, but Corbin's best deployed as a streaming option in mixed leagues right now.

  • Johnny Cueto SP | LAA

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Loses rematch against Kershaw

Cueto (4-3) gave up five runs on eight hits and a walk over six innings in a loss to the Dodgers on Wednesday. He struck out six.

Cueto handed Clayton Kershaw a rare loss with seven strong innings back on the first day of May, but the Dodgers' ace got his revenge this time around, cruising through seven scoreless frames. This has been a bit of an up-and-down season for Cueto so far, as his 4.50 ERA and 1.26 WHIP would imply, but he's really only had three unsavory starts out of nine. Keeping the ball on the ground has been a bit of an issue, as he's doing that at his lowest rate since his rookie season of 2008; in fact, his current 39.2 percent mark represents an 11-point drop from last year. Cueto obviously has a lengthy and impressive track record, so he should be able to adjust accordingly; there's no reason to downgrade your opinion of him just yet.

  • Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw: Silences Giants for seventh win

Kershaw (7-2) gave up just three hits over seven scoreless innings in a 6-1 win against the Giants on Wednesday, striking out five without a walk.

He tossed just 89 pitches in doing so, getting lifted after seven with this game well in hand. Baseball's best pitcher has mostly been up to his usual tricks, as he holds a 0.89 WHIP to accompany a 2.15 ERA through his first nine outings. It's worth noting that Kershaw's strikeout rate has dipped noticeably from past seasons (8.90 K/9), but it's a good bet that the stud southpaw will normalize that stat by ripping off a few double-digit-whiff games in a row at some point. He'll next take the ball against the Cardinals on Tuesday.

  • Pirates' Jameson Taillon: Allowed to resume some baseball activity

Taillon (groin) was cleared to play catch and resume light cardio drills Wednesday, Stephen J. Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Taillon also had a pathology report come back positive for testicular cancer, so he's not completely out of the woods at this point. According to Nesbitt, he next step is to be re-examined next week to determine if the cancer has spread to any other part of his body. More information should be available following this check-up.

  • Kenta Maeda SP | NYY

Dodgers' Kenta Maeda: Anticipated return next week

Maeda (hamstring) is expected to be activated from the disabled list sometime during the Dodgers' series with the Cardinals next week, Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register reports.

There was some speculation that Maeda could return after the minimum 10 days on the DL in order to start Sunday's contest, but the Dodgers will instead turn to Brandon McCarthy for that outing. No exact date for his return has been provided, nor have the Dodgers revealed who will be bumped from the rotation to make room for the Japanese hurler, but more information on that front should emerge sometime in the coming days.

  • Jon Gray SP | TEX

Rockies' Jon Gray: Continues bullpen sessions in boot

Gray (toe) has been throwing bullpen sessions while wearing his walking boot, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.

Of course, there's only so much one can do while wearing a walking boot, but Gray is doing everything possible to be ready as soon as possible. He'll likely need some rehab starts in order to get completely back to form and currently sits without a firm return date, but it seems like a return to the rotation is on the horizon.

  • Zack Greinke SP | KC

Diamondbacks' Zack Greinke: Claims fifth win Tuesday

Greinke improved to 5-2 on the season after giving up four runs on five hits and two walks over 6.2 innings in Tuesday's 5-4 victory over the Mets. He struck out eight batters during the outing.

Greinke saw his streak of five consecutive quality starts come to an end after serving up a two-run homer to Rene Rivera in the seventh inning to cut the Diamondbacks' lead to one run, but the bullpen shut down the Mets the rest of the way to help the right-hander secure another victory. Though he's served up nine homers in as many starts this season, Greinke has been able to avoid significant damage to his ERA thanks to an impeccable 66:11 K:BB, which represents the best ratio of his career. He'll benefit from another favorable matchup in his next turn Monday against the White Sox.

  • Marlins' Odrisamer Despaigne: Receives call-up to Miami

Despaigne was officially recalled from Triple-A New Orleans on Wednesday, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports.

Despaigne will join the active roster in place of starter Tom Koehler, who was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans following a disastrous outing Tuesday against the Astros. Manager Don Mattingly hasn't formalized his plans for Despaigne just yet, but it seems more likely that the 30-year-old will settle into a long-relief role initially rather than replacing Koehler in the rotation.

  • Tommy Milone SP | SEA

Mets' Tommy Milone: Gives up five runs in loss to Diamondbacks

Milone (1-1) gave up five runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four batters over 5.2 innings in Tuesday's loss to the Diamondbacks.

Most of the damage against Milone came in a four-run third inning, which was capped off by Paul Goldschmidt's steal of home. Milone later served up a homer, marking his sixth consecutive appearance with at least one home run allowed. His performance between Milwaukee and New York this season has been uninspiring (6.25 ERA, 1.52 WHIP), to put it nicely, but the Mets may not have a choice but to let Milone eat innings at the back end of the rotation until Steven Matz (elbow) returns from the DL.

  • Marlins' Odrisamer Despaigne: Expected to receive promotion to big club

The Marlins are expected to recall Despaigne from Triple-A New Orleans on Wednesday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

With the Marlins optioning starter Tom Koehler to the minors after his awful start Tuesday against the Astros, the team has a void in the rotation that Despaigne eventually could be a candidate to fill. After delivering an uninspiring 4.15 ERA (6.23 FIP) over five starts with New Orleans, Despaigne seems more likely to settle into a long-relief role initially before potentially getting a look as a starter. If that's the case, reliever David Phelps, who had success in a starting role late last season, would perhaps represent the best option to assume Koehler's rotation spot.
