  • Jon Gray SP | TEX

Rangers' Jon Gray: Lackluster in defeat

Gray (8-8) took the loss Friday, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks over 3.2 innings against the Guardians. He struck out three.

While it was not his best effort, Gray's loss also owes something to Andrew Heaney, who got charged with six runs over two innings after relieving the right-hander, and the Rangers offense, which was stymied until the ninth. Gray has allowed at least three earned runs in his last five starts and seven of his last nine for an ERA of 5.72 over that stretch. With the Rangers in a dog fight to win the AL West or at least secure a wild-card spot, Gray will look to right the ship in his next start, tentatively scheduled to take place mid-week at home against Boston.

  • Hunter Greene SP | CIN

Reds' Hunter Greene: One out shy of quality start

Greene did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk over 5.2 innings against the Mets. He struck out six.

Greene was well on his way to finishing six scoreless innings in line for the win, but a two-out three-run home run by Pete Alonso tied the game for the Mets and sent Greene to the showers. Prior to Alonso's homer, Greene had gone 17 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run, and his six strikeouts lifted his total to 129 in 97 innings for a K:9 of 12.0. His next start is tentatively scheduled to take place at home against the Twins.

  • David Peterson SP | CHC

Mets' David Peterson: Strikes out 10

Peterson did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks over 5.2 innings against the Reds. He struck out 10.

The 10 strikeouts matched a career high for Peterson, who has reached that total on three other occasions. He pitched well, but a two-run homer by Spencer Steer in the sixth inning was Peterson's ultimate undoing as he finished one out shy of a quality start. He lowered his season ERA to 5.52 and has 113 strikeouts in 100 innings. His next start is scheduled to take place during the Mets' upcoming road trip to Miami.

  • Luis Ortiz SP | CLE

Pirates' Luis Ortiz: Another turn in rotation

Ortiz will start Saturday's game against the Yankees, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports.

Ortiz is set to take his third turn through the Pittsburgh rotation, and he's allowed three earned runs across 11.1 innings in his last two starts. He's only posted a 4:5 K:BB in that same span, a far less impressive mark. More positively, Ortiz should be able to handle a typical starter's workload.

  • Jared Shuster RP | STL

Braves' Jared Shuster: Confirmed as Saturday's starter

Shuster will start Saturday's game against the Marlins, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Shuster was recalled to the majors Wednesday but has not yet pitched. His last outing came Sept. 8 with Triple-A Gwinnett, when he worked six innings. Assuming he's effective, Shuster should be able to work deep enough into the game to qualify for a win.

  • Jose Berrios SP | TOR

Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Fans eight over seven scoreless

Berrios (11-10) earned the win Friday, allowing five hits and zero walks over seven scoreless innings in a 3-0 win over Boston. He struck out eight.

This is the fourth time in 30 starts that Berrios has gone at least seven innings without allowing a run. After a rough August that saw him go 1-3 with a 5.53 ERA, Berrios has delivered three consecutive quality starts in September with a 1.80 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 22 strikeouts over 20 innings. He'll look to continue this momentum and remain a key cog in the Blue Jays' playoff push in his next start, tentatively scheduled to take place in New York during a mid-week showdown against the Yankees.

  • Brayan Bello RP | BOS

Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Earns another quality start

Bello (12-9) took the loss Friday, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk over six innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out 10.

The only blemish to Bello's line came when Vladimir Guerrero blasted a two-out, three-run homer in the third. Otherwise, Bello was brilliant, striking out a career-high 10 batters and allowing only two additional baserunners on the evening. It marks his 15th quality start in 26 starts this season. The 24-year-old starter will take a solid 3.71 ERA into his next start, tentatively scheduled to take place next week in Texas.

  • Joe Musgrove SP | SD

    Padres' Joe Musgrove: Season over

Musgrove (shoulder) will not pitch again in 2023, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Musgrove had his throwing program slowed, meaning he won't be able to return again this season. He reportedly hasn't suffered a setback, but the Padres instead have opted to take a conservative approach given that they've fallen out of playoff contention. Musgrove will end the campaign with a 3.05 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and a 97:21 K:BB across 97.1 frames.

  • Gavin Stone SP | LAD

Dodgers' Gavin Stone: To pitch Sunday

Stone will pitch Sunday against the Mariners as either a traditional starter or bulk reliever, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Stone pitched as a traditional starter Monday and struggled across 5.1 innings against San Diego. Manager Dave Roberts' wording Friday, when he indicated that Stone would work "the bulk innings", suggests that the right-hander will follow an opener this time around, though it's unclear who will fill that role. Emmet Sheehan was originally projected to start Sunday but could throw a shorter outing instead with the Dodgers likely monitoring his innings carefully.

  • Alex Cobb SP | DET

Giants' Alex Cobb: Start pushed back to Tuesday

Cobb had his next start pushed back to Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Cobb was originally slated to start during a doubleheader Saturday against the Rockies, but the team has opted to give him extra rest, as he's been managing a hip issue of late. The team has yet to officially announce a starter to replace Cobb, but Ross Stripling (back) was activated from the injured list Friday and appears to be a logical candidate to take the mound.
