Kyle Freeland SP | COL
Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Falls to San Diego
Freeland (4-12) took the loss Wednesday, allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings against the Padres. He struck out six.
Freeland was done in by the long ball Wednesday -- all four runs against him came via home runs. The 30-year-old southpaw is still looking for his first win since May 14. Freeland's now 0-8 with a 6.28 ERA over his last 12 starts (61.2 innings). Overall, his ERA is up to 4.86 with a 1.47 WHIP and 72:35 K:BB across 21 starts (113 innings) this season.

Tanner Bibee SP | CLE
Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Goes five innings in no-decision
Bibee did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on seven hits and four walks over five innings against the Astros. He struck out four.
Bibee was fortunate to escape with only two runs against him Wednesday, as he had to contend with multiple baserunners in four of his five innings. Still, the 24-year-old Bibee has pitched well of late -- he's held opponents to three runs or fewer in each of his last seven starts, going 4-0 with a 1.96 ERA in that span. Overall, Bibee sports a 3.14 ERA with a 1.25 WHIP and 95:35 K:BB across 17 starts (94.2 innings) in his rookie campaign. He's currently lined up for a home matchup with the Blue Jays early next week.

Domingo German SP | PIT
Yankees' Domingo German: Goes on restricted list
German was placed on the restricted list Wednesday after agreeing to voluntarily submit to inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse.
"It is critical that Domingo completely focuses on addressing his health and well-being," reads a statement from the Yankees. "We will respect his privacy as he begins this process." Nestor Cortes (shoulder) has cut short his minor-league rehab assignment and is presumably going to take over German's spot in the rotation beginning Saturday against the Astros. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said German will not return this season, per Andy Martino of SNY.tv.

Slade Cecconi SP | CLE
Diamondbacks' Slade Cecconi: Selected for MLB debut
Arizona selected Cecconi's contract from Triple-A Reno ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Giants.
Cecconi has struggled to a 6.38 ERA in 103 innings (20 starts) this season in the Pacific Coast League, but the Diamondbacks need a fill-in for Tommy Henry, who landed on the injured list this past Sunday due to left elbow inflammation. Cecconi does have good control, so maybe he'll be able to work deep and rack up some strikeouts in what will be his major-league debut at Oracle Park in San Francisco.

James Kaprielian SP | TOR
Athletics' James Kaprielian: Undergoes shoulder surgery
Kaprielian underwent arthroscopic surgery Wednesday to repair the posterior labrum in his right shoulder, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Kaprielian has been on the shelf since late June because of a right shoulder strain and is now officially done for the remainder of the 2023 campaign. The 29-year-old finishes with a 2-6 record, 6.34 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 57:31 K:BB in 11 starts and three relief appearances covering 61 innings.

Jack Flaherty SP | DET
Orioles' Jack Flaherty: O's debut coming Thursday
Flaherty will make his Orioles debut in a start Thursday at Toronto, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports.
Flaherty was acquired from the Cardinals ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline in exchange for prospects Cesar Prieto and Drew Rom. The 27-year-old impending free agent right-hander had pitched to a 4.43 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 106:54 K:BB through 109.2 innings (20 starts) this season for St. Louis.

Miles Mikolas RP | WAS
Cardinals' Miles Mikolas: Drops suspension appeal
Mikolas dropped the appeal of his five-game suspension and will begin serving it Wednesday, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
The suspension stems from his intentional plunking of Ian Happ on July 27. Mikolas just started Tuesday night against the Twins and will slot back into the Cardinals' rotation early next week versus the Rays. He stands 6-7 with a 4.29 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 94:26 K:BB through 134.1 innings (24 starts) this year.

Marcus Stroman SP | NYY
Cubs' Marcus Stroman: Lands on IL with inflamed hip
The Cubs placed Stroman on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with right hip inflammation, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
The transaction is retroactive to Tuesday, so the earliest date Stroman will be eligible for activation is Aug. 16. Stroman wasn't known to be dealing with an injury coming out of his most recent start Monday, but he'll be deactivated after enduring a rough stretch over the past month. In his last seven starts, Stroman has gone 1-4 with a 9.00 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 28:16 K:BB in 30 innings, taking some luster off of what had been his second All-Star campaign. Hayden Wesneski could be the Cubs' top choice to replace Stroman in the rotation.

Cole Ragans RP | KC
Royals' Cole Ragans: Recalled for start Wednesday
Kansas City recalled Ragans from Triple-A Omaha ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Mets.
Ragans pitched pretty well in a spot start for the Royals last month against the Rays, but the 25-year-old left-hander owns a career 5.06 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 54:32 K:BB in 69.1 total innings of work at the major-league level. He is not a recommended fantasy streamer versus New York.

Nestor Cortes SP | PHI
Yankees' Nestor Cortes: Set for weekend return
Cortes (shoulder) said Wednesday that he's preparing to return from the 60-day injured list this weekend against the Astros, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Cortes had been scheduled to make his third and final minor-league rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but he instead arrived in the Yankees clubhouse ahead of their series finale against the Rays and seems to have completed his recovery from the rotator cuff strain that sent him to the IL in late May. Luis Severino is currently listed as the Yankees' starter Friday versus Houston, but that could change given how badly he's struggled. The Yankees may also look to have Cortes start Saturday and get piggybacked by Domingo German, who tossed five innings in relief after being scratched from his start Monday against the Rays. Per Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, Cortes said he'll be limited to around 60 pitches in his return to the Yankees, so if he starts, he could struggle to reach the five innings he would need to qualify for a win.
