  • Zack Greinke SP | KC

Royals' Zack Greinke: Falls to Guardians

Greinke (1-11) took the loss Tuesday, allowing four runs on four hits and zero walks over five innings against Cleveland. He struck out one.

After throwing 62 pitches in his first start since returning from a brief IL stint, Greinke got up to 71 pitches Tuesday. However, he added another tally in the loss column, allowing four runs including a pair of homers to No. 9 hitter Bo Naylor. Greinke now has 11 losses on the season, the second-most in baseball. Over his last five appearances (25 innings), he holds a 7.56 ERA, a 2.2 HR/9 and an 8:5 K:BB.

  • Corbin Burnes SP | ARI

Brewers' Corbin Burnes: Takes loss despite quality start

Burnes (9-6) was charged with the loss Tuesday against the Reds after he gave up two runs on three hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out six.

Burnes was once again in peak form, though Cincinnati was able to tally a pair of runs during the fourth inning on two singles, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. The right-hander totaled 31 called and swinging strikes as he delivered a fifth straight quality start, though he was unable to extend his four-start win streak. Burnes has a 3.46 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 131:43 K:BB across 127.1 innings this season.

  • Aaron Civale RP | CHC

Guardians' Aaron Civale: Tosses gem against Royals

Civale (4-2) earned the win Tuesday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over eight innings against the Royals. He struck out five.

Civale logged his longest start of 2023 on Tuesday, allowing one run over eight frames on 93 pitches. He was especially effective at limiting power, holding the Royals without an extra-base hit. Though Civale hasn't been a strong producer in the strikeout column (6.85 K/9), he owns an impressive 2.54 ERA and a 0.6 HR/9 through 71 innings in 2023. Civale will look to continue his breakout campaign in his next projected start, which is expected to come against one of MLB's worst offenses in the White Sox.

  • Andrew Abbott SP | CIN

Reds' Andrew Abbott: Fans nine over six scoreless

Abbott (6-2) earned the win Tuesday at Milwaukee after he struck out nine and allowed seven hits and one walk over six scoreless innings.

The Brewers had traffic on the bases in every inning, but Abbott induced 15 swinging strikes to help deliver his fifth scoreless start of the season. Since he surrendered six runs over 4.1 frames against Milwaukee on July 7, the rookie left-hander has given up just two runs with an 18:5 K:BB across 20 innings over his past three starts.

  • J.P. France RP | HOU

Astros' J.P. France: Allows just one unearned run

France (6-3) earned the win Tuesday against the Rangers after he gave up one unearned run on five hits and two walks across seven innings. He struck out three.

The rookie right-hander generated a mere four swinging strikes but allowed only five singles as Texas managed just a single unearned run against him. It's France's fourth victory in his past five starts, and he has a 1.72 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 16:6 K:BB over 31.1 frames in that span. The 28-year-old now has a 2.87 ERA through his first 14 major-league starts.

  • Kyle Freeland SP | COL

Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Targeting Friday return

Freeland (shoulder) will likely be activated from the 15-day injured list Friday to start the Rockies' series opener versus the Athletics at Coors Field, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports.

Freeland is slated to throw a live batting practice session Tuesday and should be activated from the 15-day injured list Friday if all goes well. The 30-year-old southpaw has been on the IL since July 14 with a dislocated right shoulder and is on track to face baseball's worst offense during his return.

  • Merrill Kelly SP | ARI

Diamondbacks' Merrill Kelly: Activated for start Tuesday

Kelly (calf) was activated from the 15-day injured list ahead of his start Tuesday against the Cardinals, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

Kelly is back in the Diamondbacks' rotation after missing about four weeks because of a blood clot in his lower right leg. He did not go out on a minor-league rehab assignment but reportedly got his pitch count up to around 75 in a recent simulated outing. The 34-year-old carries a 9-4 record with a 3.22 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 98:37 K:BB through 95 innings (16 starts) this season.

  • Royals' Daniel Lynch: Setback with shoulder

Lynch (shoulder) was unable to complete a scheduled bullpen session Monday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Lynch is scheduled to undergo follow-up testing later this week, and his IL stint is now certain to last longer than 15 days. He's been on the shelf since July 19 because of a left shoulder strain that was initially believed to be relatively minor.

  • Karl Kauffmann RP | COL

Rockies' Karl Kauffmann: Sent back to Triple-A

Colorado optioned Kauffmann to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.

Kauffmann threw 43 pitches over four innings of long relief Monday versus the Nationals and wasn't going to be available for the next few days. Riley Pint has been brought up to fill the bullpen vacancy for Colorado.

  • Chris Sale SP | ATL

Red Sox's Chris Sale: Could begin rehab next week

Sale (shoulder) could be ready to begin a rehab assignment next week, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Sale will throw an up-and-down bullpen session Thursday at Triple-A Worcester and, assuming that goes well, could be cleared to start pitching in rehab games next. McCaffrey notes that the Red Sox are considering bringing Sale back from the injured list early and having him build up his stamina while in the majors. Sale is eligible for activation Aug. 1, but it seems as if he would need at least a few more days than that. He's been out since early June with a stress reaction in his left scapula.
