Javier Baez SS | DET
Tigers' Javier Baez: Absent from lineup
Baez is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Yankees, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Baez had started each of the last five contests after missing a couple games with an illness. Zach McKinstry will man shortstop Wednesday.

Nick Allen SS | HOU
Athletics' Nick Allen: Moves to bench Wednesday
Allen is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mariners.
Aledmys Diaz will pick up the start at shortstop in the series finale while Allen rests after starting the past two days. Unless the Athletics call upon Allen for a pinch-hitting appearance Wednesday, he'll finish August with a .271/.311/.414 slash line over 23 games.

Anthony Volpe SS | NYY
Yankees' Anthony Volpe: Belts 19th homer
Volpe went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 4-2 victory against Detroit.
Volpe struck out in each of his first three plate appearances before hammering a solo shot to left field in the ninth inning. The long ball was his fifth over his past 16 contests, a span during which he's slashing .250/.311/.589 with 13 RBI. Volpe is up to 19 homers on the campaign and has already reached 20 thefts. He's one long ball away from becoming the first rookie in Yankees history to put up a 20-20 season.

Ernie Clement SS | TOR
Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Nabs third straight start
Clement will start at shortstop and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Nationals.
He'll man shortstop for the third game in a row after going 2-for-7 at the dish between the first two contests of the series with Washington. The Blue Jays seem content to go with Clement as their primary option at shortstop until Bo Bichette (quadricep) is cleared to return from the 10-day injured list.

Mikey Romero SS | BOS
Red Sox's Mikey Romero: Back on IL with back strain
High-A Greenville placed Romero on its 7-day injured list Aug. 19 with a lower-back strain, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
Romero had just been promoted from Single-A Salem on Aug. 15 before suffering the injury in his third game with Greenville on Aug. 17, when his back appeared to seize up on him as he made a throw across the diamond. The shortstop previously missed the first two and a half months of the season with a back injury and could be headed for an extended absence again, though Speier relays that the 19-year-old is expected to avoid surgery. Romero has compiled a .214/.294/.286 slash line with no home runs and two stolen bases over 34 games between three different levels in 2023.

Osleivis Basabe SS | SF
Rays' Osleivis Basabe: Not in Tuesday's lineup
Basabe is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Marlins.
Basabe started the past four games and will take a seat Tuesday after going 2-for-10 with an RBI and a caught stealing. Vidal Brujan will handle shortstop and bat sixth versus Miami ace Sandy Alcantara.

Mason McCoy SS | SD
Blue Jays' Mason McCoy: Contract selected by Toronto
The Blue Jays selected McCoy's contract from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old was acquired by Toronto from Seattle in exchange for Trent Thornton in late July and will now have the chance to make his major-league debut. McCoy has a .572 OPS in 21 games since joining Buffalo but fared better with the Mariners' Triple-A affiliate with a .737 OPS. He'll provide some defensive versatility after Bo Bichette (quadriceps) landed on the injured list but may not see much playing time.
-
Bo Bichette SS | NYM
Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Lands on injured list
Bichette was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right quadriceps strain, retroactive to Aug. 28.
Bichette sat out Monday's contest against Washington after leaving Sunday's matchup with the Guardians due to quad tightness, and he will end up on the injured list after an MRI revealed a strain. It's unclear how long the 25-year-old is expected to be sidelined by the injury, though he won't be eligible to be reinstated until Sept. 8. Mason McCoy was promoted from Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move, though it's likely Santiago Espinal or Ernie Clement that will see most of the reps at shortstop while Bichette is out.

J.P. Crawford SS | SEA
Mariners' J.P. Crawford: Hits leadoff blast
Crawford went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a walk and two additional runs scored in Monday's 7-0 win over the Athletics.
Crawford took Kyle Muller's second pitch of the game over the center-field wall. This was Crawford's second homer in four games, and he has three multi-hit efforts in that span. The shortstop is at a .268/.384/.421 slash line with 12 long balls, 42 RBI, 76 runs scored and one stolen base through 114 contests this season. Prior to 2023, he'd never hit more than nine homers or posted an OPS better than .714 in any big-league campaign.
