Diamondbacks rookie shortstop Chris Owings will likely see some playing time at second base over the remainder of the season, MLB.com reports. The team could be looking to see if Owings can function as a regular second baseman with the intention of having both he and Didi Gregorius on the field regularly in 2014.

"I've been taking ground balls over there," Owings told MLB.com Friday. "Whenever he decides to play me over there, I'll be ready."

Owings, a natural shortstop, played 11 games at second base in the minors this season.

Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada is facing an important offseason, according to the Star-Ledger. 

Manager Terry Collins said Tejada would likely be the team's starting shortstop next season depending on how hard he works. Tejada broke his fibula, which will put him out of action for a while. He struggled through the season, dealing with injuries and a prolonged stint in the minors. 

Tejada hit .202 in 208 at-bats. 

Nationals manager Davey Johnson indicated that infielder Zach Walters has a chance to make the team next season, MASN.com reports.

"At some point I would like to see more (of Walters)," Johnson said. "He has three quality at-bats up here. He had a good year down there. He is young. But he can play all positions in the infield and he to me is a guy you need to look at to be a part of this club next year."

Walters hit .253/.286/.517 with 29 home runs and 77 RBI in 487 at-bats for Triple-A Syracuse during his age-23 season.

Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford is not in the team's starting lineup Thursday against the Mets.

Crawford will be replaced by Ehire Adrianza, who will make his first start in the majors. Crawford is hitting .256 in 481 at-bats. 

Mets infielder Ruben Tejada saw his season come to an end Wednesday after a collision with outfielder Andrew Brown. According to MetsBlog.com, Tejada is out for the season with a broken right fibula.

Tejada finished Wednesday's game against the Giants 1 for 3 before suffering the injury. He finishes his season with a .202/.259/.260 batting line, with each mark representing a career-low at the major-league level. Tejada appeared in just 57 games, picking up 208 at-bats. 

Dodgers manager Donmattingly told MLB.com he plans to give shortstop Dee Gordon an opportunity to play at second base and in the outfield before the season is over.

"There's a possibility as the season goes on that we would see him somewhere other than short," Mattingly said Tuesday. "I think we could see him play somewhere different."

Mets infielder Ruben Tejada will likely be called up Tuesday, according to ESPNNewYork.com.

The move was expected, as Tejada was supposed to join the team soon. Tejada's accumulated enough time in the minors this year that his free agency has been pushed back to 2017. Tejada is hitting .209/.267/.262 in 187 at-bats. 

Diamondbacks shortstop Cliff Pennington will go on paternity leave for the next three games, the Arizona Republic reports. Pennington is expected to return to the club for Friday's game against Colorado.

Mets manager Terry Collins told reporters Sunday that infielder Ruben Tejada will be called up from Triple-A in the next few days. Reports Saturday suggested that the team could be waiting until at least Tuesday to make a move to delay Tejada's free-agency clock for a year.

Tejada has hit .288/.337/.379 with two home runs and 24 RBI in 240 at-bats with Triple-A Las Vegas.

Diamondbacks shortstop prospect Chris Owings is expected to receive "significant" playing time over the rest of September, MLB.com reports.

"We're going to use him," manager Kirk Gibson told MLB.com Wednesday. "We've got to see what he can do. He's earned it, he's played well. I want to find out what he can do, for sure, I don't want him to just sit there."

Owings was named the MVP of the Pacific Coast League after hitting .330/.359/.482 with 12 home runs, 81 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 546 at-bats with Triple-A Reno.
