  • Nick Ahmed SS | TEX

Diamondbacks' Nick Ahmed: Retreats to bench

Ahmed will sit Saturday against the Mets.

Ahmed returned from the injured list Friday and went hitless in his season debut. He won't be asked to start on back-to-back days right away, with Geraldo Perdomo starting at shortstop Saturday.

  • Javier Baez SS | DET

Tigers' Javier Baez: Eyeing Sunday return

Baez (thumb) is hoping to return Sunday against the Rockies, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Saturday was the earliest he reportedly could have returned, but he will miss both games of the twin bill. He will take batting practice on the field in preparation for a return Sunday. Harold Castro will start at shortstop in his absence.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Will practice at 3B

Perdomo will receive practice reps at third base, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports.

Perdomo's playing time at shortstop took a hit when the Diamondbacks activated Nick Ahmed off the injured list Friday. Ahmed started Friday's game, but the plan is to ease him back to an everyday role. That means Perdomo will share shortstop for now while getting comfortable at third base, a position he's never played professionally and one of weakness early on for Arizona.

Diamondbacks' Nick Ahmed: Hitless in season debut

Ahmed went 0-for-4 in Friday's 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Mets.

Ahmed's shoulder injury improved to the point where he was activated from the injured list Friday. He'll resume his role as the primary shortstop, although the plan is for him to be eased back into the lineup, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports. That means Ahmed won't be starting every day immediately. In corresponding decisions, the Diamondbacks sent Yonny Hernandez back to Triple-A Reno and kept prospect Geraldo Perdomo, who will share shortstop with Ahmed while also getting practice time at third base.

  • Jorge Mateo SS | ATL

Orioles' Jorge Mateo: Swipes two bags

Mateo went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases in Friday's 5-3 win over the Angels.

Mateo got aboard with a fielder's choice and a single in this contest, and he stole a base each time. The 26-year-old has maintained a fairly regular role in the lineup, though he's often hit in the bottom third of the order. He's up to five stolen bases with a .250/.313/.295 slash line, three RBI, three runs scored and a pair of doubles through 13 games. Mateo also hasn't drawn a walk in nine contests after earning four free passes in his first four games this season.

  • Ezequiel Tovar SS | COL

Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Hot start at Double-A

Tovar is hitting .304/.396/.609 with three home runs and three stolen bases across 52 plate appearances at Double-A Hartford.

Tovar spent the early part of spring training with the big-league club, and he has begun the 2022 regular season with Double-A Hartford. He delivered a multi-homer performance April 22, which inflated his overall numbers given the small sample. However, Tovar hasn't looked out of place at his current assignment, as he also has five doubles while striking out at a 25 percent clip.

  • Anthony Volpe SS | NYY

Yankees' Anthony Volpe: Swipes three bags in Double-A game

Volpe went 0-for-2 with three walks and three stolen bases Friday in an Eastern League contest against Hartford.

The Yankees' top prospect has largely struggled in his first taste of Double-A ball, slashing .146/.294/.341 with 16 strikeouts in 51 plate appearances. His considerable skills haven't been entirely invisible, however, as he has slugged two homers and notched five steals through 11 contests. Volpe broke through with 27 homers and 33 thefts across stints at Low-A and HIgh-A last season, but he has found the going much tougher so far at the Double-A level.

  • Red Sox's Xander Bogaerts: Three hits in win

Bogaerts went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in a 4-3 win Friday in Tampa Bay.

Bogaerts recorded a hit in each of his first three plate appearances against Corey Kluber, scoring in both the first and third innings. The three-time All-Star has five three-hit games on the season with four of those coming in his last six contests. He is 15-for-29 with six extra-base hits in the last seven games, raising his batting average to .385 for the season.

  • Rays' Wander Franco: Two blasts in loss

Franco went 2-for-5 with two solo home runs in a 4-3 loss Friday against Boston.

Franco homered off Michael Wacha in the first and fifth innings, accounting for all of Tampa Bay's runs off the starter. He came to the plate with the Rays down 4-3 with two outs in the ninth and nearly walked it off but Trevor Story made a nice play on a sharply hit ground ball to end the game. The 21-year-old is off to an incredible start with 11 extra-base hits in 13 games and a 1.111 OPS. He's recorded multiple hits in eight games this season.

  • Giants' Brandon Crawford: Doubles twice, drives in three

Crawford went 3-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI and a run scored in Friday's 7-1 win over the Nationals.

Crawford led off the second inning with a double and scored on a Mike Yastrzemski single. In the same frame, he drilled a three-run double and knocked Patrick Corbin out of the contest. It was his third multi-hit game in his last six appearances and his first three-hit performance of the season. Crawford is now slashing .245/.302/.367 with four extra-base hits and seven RBI.
