Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Could get looks in outfield

Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Saturday that Sosa could be an option to see reps in the outfield once shortstop Trea Turner (hamstring) returns from the 10-day injured list, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Sosa has logged a total of just 5.1 innings of outfield in the majors and has never started a game in the outfield in the professional ranks. He's been outstanding at shortstop since Turner got hurt, slashing .310/.380/.606 with three home runs in 22 games, which has the Phillies contemplating other ways of keeping him in the lineup long term. The Phillies could have an opening in left field if Brandon Marsh (hamstring) needs to miss time, but Sosa will still be needed at shortstop until Turner is back.

Phillies' Trea Turner: Recovering from minor setback

Turner (hamstring) had a minor setback when he felt some leg soreness following a high-intensity workout May 25, MLB.com reports.

Turner resumed workouts this past weekend, doing some light jogging and change-of-direction running in addition to fielding grounders and hitting in the cage. The Phillies haven't offered a timetable for when he will run the bases, and Turner will need to start up a running program in addition to taking part in sliding drills before he's cleared for a rehab assignment. Turner will travel with the Phillies for their series in London against the Mets later this week to continue workouts, but he won't be activated from the 10-day injured list. After he had seemingly been trending toward an earlier-than-expected return, Turner now looks to be at least a couple weeks away from rejoining the Phillies lineup.

  • Luis Almeyda SS | BAL

Orioles' Luis Almeyda: Playing regularly in FCL

Almeyda (shoulder) has appeared in 19 games for the Orioles' rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate, slashing .167/.309/.278 with two home runs and four stolen bases across 68 plate appearances.

The 18-year-old infielder's 2023 campaign was cut short after he required surgery on his left shoulder last August, but he was cleared for action ahead of the start of the FCL season in early May. Almeyda has shown a patient approach at the plate (16.9 percent walk rate) thus far, but he's yet to make consistent contact and hasn't hit for much power.

  • Paul DeJong SS | NYY

White Sox's Paul DeJong: Heating back up

DeJong went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and two RBI on Sunday against the Brewers.

DeJong began the day with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and popped a leadoff homer three frames later. He went deep four times in a 12-game span through mid-May and has now gone yard twice in the last three games. DeJong has a 34.2 percent strikeout rate across 184 plate appearances this season, which will prevent consistent production, but he's hit .245 with a .766 OPS and six home runs since the start of May.

  • Romy Gonzalez 2B | BOS

Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Tracking toward brief IL stint

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Sunday that he's hopeful Gonzalez (hamstring) will be ready to return from the 10-day injured list around when he's first eligible to be activated, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.

Gonzalez was joined on the IL on Sunday by fellow infielder Vaughn Grissom, who is recovering from a right hamstring strain. Grissom's injury is believed to be the more significant of the two, as he'll be sent in for an MRI, whereas Gonzalez won't be subject to any further imaging. Assuming the tightness in his left leg subsides in the coming days and he's able to resume baseball activities, Gonzalez could be ready to return from the IL for the Red Sox's three-game series with the Phillies that begins June 11. In the meantime, the Red Sox are likely to lean on Enmanuel Valdez and Jamie Westbrook as the main options at second base, with the former occupying the strong side of a platoon.

  • Giants' Casey Schmitt: Homers in consecutive games

Schmitt went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 7-5 loss to the Yankees.

With Marco Luciano (hamstring) landing on the injured list Friday, Schmitt has a chance to make shortstop his own in June. This was Schmitt's second game in a row in the lineup -- he started versus right-hander Cody Poteet on Saturday and stayed in the starting nine versus southpaw Nestor Cortes on Sunday. Through eight games this season, Schmitt has two homers, five RBI and two runs scored over 30 plate appearances. Brett Wisely has also been an option at shortstop lately, and both Schmitt and Wisely offer utility upside if the Giants opt to get creative with their lineup decisions.

  • White Sox's Braden Shewmake: Shut down at Triple-A

Triple-A Charlotte placed Shewmake on its 7-day injured list Sunday due to an unspecified injury.

After receiving limited playing time with the White Sox, Shewmake was optioned to Charlotte on May 17 and had settled into an everyday role with the Triple-A club. However, he went just 4-for-33 (.121 average) at the dish over nine games with Charlotte before suffering an apparent injury Saturday and landing on the IL a day later.

  • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Homers, reaches base five times

Henderson went 3-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored while walking twice Sunday against the Rays.

Henderson led off the bottom of the first with his 19th homer of the year to provide the Orioles with the early advantage. He went on to reach base in all five at-bats, with the three-hit performance representing his fourth such effort of the season and first since April 24. Through 251 plate appearances over 57 games, Henderson is slashing .268/.368/.591 with 19 homers, 42 RBI, 44 runs and eight steals in as many attempts.

  • Jose Caballero 2B | NYY

Rays' Jose Caballero: Clubs third home run

Caballero went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored Sunday against the Orioles.

Caballero belted the first pitch of the seventh inning over the left-field wall for his third homer of the year. It was also his second hit of the day, representing his ninth multi-hit game in 54 games this season. The performance raised Caballero's average to .260 with three homers, 18 RBI, 27 runs and 20 steals in 28 attempts.

  • Mookie Betts RF | LAD

Dodgers' Mookie Betts: Pops leadoff homer Sunday

Betts went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk in Sunday's 4-0 win over the Rockies.

The Dodgers had all the offense they needed for the win after their first at-bat, as Betts drilled Austin Gomber's first pitch over the wall in left field. Prior to Sunday, Betts had gone 0-for-13 over the last three games, which was his longest slump of the season. That's a testament to his consistency and his elite skills as the tone-setter atop the Dodgers' lineup. Betts is slashing .318/.412/.515 with nine homers, 32 RBI, 43 runs scored, nine stolen bases, 14 doubles and three triples over 60 contests.
