Red Sox's David Hamilton: Working in platoon at shortstop

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that Hamilton and Romy Gonzalez will form a platoon at shortstop while Trevor Story (shoulder) is sidelined, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

The left-handed hitting Hamilton should fill the strong side of the platoon, with Ceddanne Rafaela also expected to see some time in the middle infield. It will be the first extended run of playing time in the big leagues for Hamilton, who shined Sunday in his season debut by going 2-for-4 with a solo homer and a walk.

  • Eddys Leonard SS | MIL

Tigers' Eddys Leonard: Nursing oblique strain

Leonard is recovering from a left oblique strain, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Leonard suffered the injury while playing for Triple-A Toledo and is now headed to extended spring training to rehab. It's not clear at this point how much time he might miss.

  • Orlando Arcia SS | MIN

Braves' Orlando Arcia: Three more hits in Monday's loss

Arcia went 3-for-5 with a run scored in Monday's loss to the Mets.

The 29-year-old shortstop has racked up five multi-hit performances in Atlanta's first nine games, while failing to collect a hit at all only twice. Arcia is batting a dazzling .417 (15-for-36) with five doubles in the early going, but his spot at the bottom of the lineup has limited his production otherwise -- those knocks have turned into just two RBI and four runs.

  • Vaughn Grissom 2B | LAA

Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Will see some action at shortstop

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that Grissom (groin/hamstring) will primarily play second base on his rehab assignment but will also see some action at shortstop, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Shortstop is Grissom's natural position, although the reviews of his defense there are not good. It doesn't sound like the Red Sox plan to use him as a regular at shortstop, but with Trevor Story (shoulder) out indefinitely, they want him prepared to handle the position on occasion. Grissom will begin a rehab assignment this coming weekend, per Julian McWilliams and Alex Speier of The Boston Globe.

  • Trevor Story SS | BOS

Red Sox's Trevor Story: Could require shoulder surgery

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that there is concern about the bone structure in Story's left shoulder and surgery might be required, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

Story is dealing with a subluxation and the worry after an exam in Boston with team doctors is that he might have additional damage. He will receive a second opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Friday, after which more will be known about his long-term prognosis. Story has not yet been ruled out for the season, but if surgery is needed, it's expected to be a season-ending procedure.

  • Oneil Cruz SS | PIT

Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Sitting out against right-hander

Cruz is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Tigers, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

It's Cruz's second day off of the season and his first versus a right-hander. He had batted leadoff in each of the previous six contest against righties. Jared Triolo will be at the top of the order Tuesday, while Alika Williams gets a start at shortstop.

  • Mookie Betts RF | LAD

Dodgers' Mookie Betts: Plays in 10th game at shortstop

Betts made his 10th appearance of the season at shortstop in Monday's game against the Twins.

It's a notable number because it means Betts will now have shortstop eligibility if your fantasy league uses a 10-game in-season threshold. Betts, of course, already has second base and outfield eligibility, as well. The 31-year-old is slashing a robust .375/.508/.792 with five home runs and two stolen bases in the early going.

  • J.P. Crawford SS | SEA

Mariners' J.P. Crawford: Swats second homer

Crawford went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Monday against Toronto.

Although Crawford smacked his second homer of the season, he wasn't able to reach safely in his other three at-bats. He's still looking for his first multi-hit game of 2024, slashing .140/.213/.279 with five runs scored and four RBI over 11 appearances.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Undergoes surgery

Perdomo (knee) underwent surgery to repair a torn right meniscus Monday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said the procedure went well. The organization believes Perdomo will need about a month to recover and rehab.

  • Anthony Volpe SS | NYY

Yankees' Anthony Volpe: Launches three-run blast

Volpe went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and a walk during Monday's 7-0 win over the Marlins.

Volpe's fourth-inning blast off Jesus Luzardo kicked off the scoring for the Yankees and provided more than enough run support during the team's shutout victory. Volpe doubled his home run and RBI total for the season with Monday's effort while the talented young shortstop's performance actually lowered his average to .417 as he continues to pace all of baseball in that department.
