  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Not in lineup Friday

Perdomo is absent from the lineup Friday versus the Orioles.

Nick Ahmed will start at shortstop and bat eighth as the Diamondbacks look for platoon advantages against left-hander Cole Irvin. The switch-hitting Perdomo carries a .633 OPS in 54 plate appearances this year versus southpaws. He's put up a .786 OPS in 353 plate appearances versus righties.

  • Giants' Brandon Crawford: Activated, in lineup Friday

Crawford (forearm) was activated from the 10-day injured list Friday, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Crawford will start at shortstop and bat eighth against the Padres following a two-week absence to heal a minor left forearm strain. The 36-year-old has slashed just .194/.264/.318 across 270 plate appearances when healthy this season.

  • Javier Baez SS | DET

Tigers' Javier Baez: Out again Friday

Baez (undisclosed) remains out of the lineup Friday versus the White Sox.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told reporters Thursday that Baez was "beat up a little bit," and now the 30-year-old shortstop is sitting for a third consecutive game. Zack Short will fill in and bat ninth at Chicago.

  • Alika Williams SS | PIT

Pirates' Alika Williams: Not starting Friday

Williams isn't in the Pirates' lineup Friday against the Cardinals.

The Pirates seem to have fallen into a pattern of rotating between Williams and Liover Peguero at shortstop over the past several days. Friday will mark Peguero's turn to start at short while Ji Hwan Bae starts at second base.

  • Grae Kessinger SS | NYM

Astros' Grae Kessinger: Activated to MLB roster

Houston activated Kessinger (illness) from the COVID-19 injured list Friday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Kessinger has been away from the Astros since Aug. 19 due to COVID-like symptoms. The 26-year-old infielder returns to a .194/.293/.333 slash line through his first 41 major-league plate appearances.

  • Jose Tena 3B | WAS

Guardians' Jose Tena: Recalled from Triple-A

Cleveland recalled Tena from Triple-A Columbus on Friday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.

Tena earns a September call-up to the Guardians after slashing .275/.359/.419 with eight homers and 16 steals in 96 games this summer between Double-A and Triple-A. The 22-year-old can back up multiple spots on the infield as Cleveland aims to gain ground in the AL Central standings.

  • Anthony Volpe SS | NYY

Yankees' Anthony Volpe: Reaches 20-20 mark with big homer

Volpe went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in Thursday's extra-inning loss to the Tigers.

Volpe recorded both extra-base hits in the contest for New York. His fourth-inning double was negated when he was picked off second base, but he made up for that lapse with a clutch homer in the ninth, slugging a two-out, three-run, game-tying shot off Detroit closer Alex Lange that resulted in the contest going into extra innings. The long ball was Volpe's 20th of the campaign, and he's already recorded 21 thefts, making him the first player in franchise history to put up a 20-20 performance as a rookie. Volpe had also recorded a 20-20 season in each of his previous two years in the minors.

  • Paul DeJong SS | DET

Giants' Paul DeJong: Sits amid struggles

DeJong is not in the lineup Thursday at San Diego.

Casey Schmitt will start at shortstop and bat ninth for the visiting Giants. DeJong has gone 3-for-25 (.120) through his first seven games with San Francisco after a 3-for-44 (.068) run with Toronto.

  • Miguel Rojas SS | LAD

Dodgers' Miguel Rojas: Not starting Thursday

Rojas isn't in the Dodgers' lineup Thursday against Atlanta, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

After having his six-game hitting streak snapped Wednesday, Rojas will get a breather and hand starting shortstop duties to Amed Rosario, who will bat ninth Thursday.

  • Jon Berti 3B | CHC

Marlins' Jon Berti: On bench Thursday

Berti is not in the lineup Thursday against the Nationals.

Joey Wendle will get a second consecutive start at shortstop as the Marlins face another right-hander in Joan Adon. Berti has out-produced Wendle on the whole this year, but the veteran speedster carries a weak .255/.294/.319 season slash line versus righties.
