The Bears released Pettis (undisclosed) from injured reserve Thursday with an injury settlement, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. The injury settlement allows Pettis to sign with another team once he is recovered from whatever is ailing him. The 2018 second-round pick missed all of last season due to a back injury he sustained during training camp. Pettis appeared in all 17 regular-season games for the Bears in 2022, and he finished with 19 catches (on 41 targets) for 245 yards and three touchdowns.

The Bears placed Pettis on injured reserve Tuesday with an undisclosed injury, Larry Mayer of the team's official site reports. With no designation to return, the only way Pettis can play this season is if he reaches an injury settlement and gets released by the Bears. He scored a pair of touchdowns during the preseason but isn't likely to be more than a fifth or sixth wideout even if he gets healthy at some point soon.

Pettis caught each of his three targets for 53 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-3 preseason win over the Bengals on Saturday. A 2018 second-round pick, Pettis was the Bears' No. 3 receiver as recently as 2022 but didn't play in 2023 after suffering a back injury last August. He's now battling for one of the final roster spots, having caught each of his three passes Saturday in the third quarter after starting QB Caleb Williams was pulled from the game.

After missing the 2023 season with a back injury, Pettis is likely battling for a depth role in the Chicago offense. In 2022 with the Bears, Pettis posted 245 receiving yards and three touchdowns, which represented his best season since 2018. Unlike previous Bears teams, Chicago now has a strong trio of wide receivers in DJ Moore, Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze. As a result, Pettis will likely be battling for a roster spot against Tyler Scott, Velus Jones, DeAndre Carter and others.

The Bears signed Pettis (undisclosed) to a one-year deal Friday, Larry Mayer of the team's official site reports. Pettis was dealing with an undisclosed injury back in September of 2023, but it now seems as if he's moved past the issue. The 2018 second-round pick has spent time with the 49ers, Giants and Bears throughout his five-year NFL career, and he's agreed to terms to return to Chicago. Pettis' most recent in-game action came back in 2022 with the Bears, appearing in 17 games and catching 19 of his 41 targets for 245 yards and three touchdowns. The 28-year-old wideout also returned 18 punts for 163 yards in 2022, and he'll likely be competing to make Chicago's 53-man roster as a return man this offseason.
