The Saints signed Hines to the practice squad Thursday, John Sigler of SaintsWire reports. Hines has appeared in three games this season for the Chargers, where he totaled two rushing attempts for minus-2 yards. The veteran's biggest contributions came on special teams, as he racked up 195 return yards through his three appearances. Hines will likely be elevated for Sunday's game against the Jets and serve as the No. 3 running back behind Evan Hull and Audric Estime.

The Saints are expected to sign Hines to the practice squad, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports Wednesday. Devin Neal (hamstring) has already been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Jets and Alvin Kamara (knee/ankle) has been sidelined for the Saints' last three games, leaving Evan Hull and Audric Estime as the only healthy running backs on New Orleans' active roster. Hines appeared in three regular-season games for the Chargers earlier in the season before being cut from the practice squad in late October, but the veteran running back is poised to get another chance with the Saints. Assuming he's signed to the Saints' practice squad, he could be elevated for Week 16 to provide New Orleans another option out of the backfield and a returner on special teams.

Hines reverted to the Chargers' practice squad Friday, per the NFL's transaction log. Hines and Jaret Patterson were both elevated to the Chargers' active roster for Thursday's game against the Vikings due to the absences of Hassan Haskins (hamstring) and Omarion Hampton (ankle). Hines saw just seven snaps (four on offense, three on special teams) while logging two carries for minus-2 yards, and he was the Chargers' clear RB3 behind Kimani Vidal (54 offensive snaps) and Patterson (15 offensive snaps). Hines has been elevated from the practice squad by the Chargers three times this season, which is the maximum amount. He would have to be signed to the active roster in order to play for the Chargers for the rest of the season.

Hines reverted to the Chargers' practice squad Monday. Hines was elevated to the active roster for a second straight game in Week 7, playing just one snap with the offense in Sunday's 38-24 loss to the Colts. The running back instead made his biggest mark on special teams, where he returned four kickoffs for 98 yards. With Hassan Haskins (hamstring) listed as a non-participant on Monday's estimated injury report, Hines could be a candidate for elevation again in Week 8 with the Chargers facing the Vikings on Thursday.

The Chargers elevated Hines from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday. Hines will be elevated to the Chargers' active roster for a second straight week and will be available to play against the Colts, the team that drafted him in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Hines primarily served on special teams during the Chargers' Week 6 win over the Dolphins, when he turned three kickoff returns into 97 yards. However, the veteran running back could be deployed out of the backfield to spell Kimani Vidal if Hassan Haskins (chest) is not cleared to play Sunday.
