  • Jaguars' Travis Etienne: Records receiving TD in win

Etienne rushed four times for three yards and brought in his only target for a nine-yard touchdown in the Jaguars' 26-13 preseason win over the Chiefs on Saturday night.

The talented back found running room at a premium, but he was able to cap off the Jaguars' opening possession with a nine-yard touchdown grab in connection with Trevor Lawrence. Etienne projects for another robust role in the upcoming season as the Jaguars' clear No. 1 back. It remains to be seen if he'll see a boost in playing time during the team's second preseason game against the Buccaneers next Saturday night.

  • Zack Moss RB | CIN

Bengals' Zack Moss: Dealing with illness

Moss didn't play in Saturday's preseason loss to the Buccaneers due to an illness, Kelsey Conway of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

According to coach Zac Taylor, Moss became sick Friday night, so the Bengals exercised caution with their top running back as they kicked off exhibition season. Chase Brown, Moss's primary competition for RB reps, didn't fare too well Saturday, notching five carries for 10 yards while catching his only target for no yards. Moss will aim to get healthy ahead of next Saturday's preseason contest at Chicago.

  • Tony Pollard RB | TEN

Titans' Tony Pollard: Leads backfield in debut with TEN

Pollard rushed four times for 35 yards and a caught both of his targets for 11 yards in Saturday's 17-13 win over the 49ers.

Pollard was the first back utilized in Saturday's preseason opener and wound up leading the team with six combined touches for 46 yards. Tyjae Spears finished with just four total yards on four touches in the exhibition win, but he scored the only rushing touchdown out of the duo. Pollard showed good burst and acceleration in his brief debut Saturday, and he remains the preferred fantasy target out of Tennessee's backfield as we enter draft season.

  • Jordan Mason RB | MIN

49ers' Jordan Mason: Star of opening drive Saturday

Mason rushed six times for 34 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's preseason tilt against the Titans.

Unquestioned starter Christian McCaffrey (calf) sat out Saturday's preseason opener along with the rest of San Francisco's star players, affording Mason the opportunity to start the team's exhibition opener against Tennessee. The 25-year-old was featured heavily on the 49ers' opening drive and wound up scoring the only first-half touchdown for his club. Mason's strong start to the preseason schedule has the running back in a position to seize the primary backup role behind CMC, with Elijah Mitchell (hamstring) and rookie Isaac Guerendo (hamstring) both missing Saturday's contest to injury.

  • J.K. Dobbins RB | DEN

Chargers' J.K. Dobbins: Not in line to play Saturday

Dobbins isn't slated to play in Saturday's preseason opener against the Seahawks, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.

The same goes for fellow key RB Gus Edwards, which sets the stage for Kimani Vidal, Isaiah Spiller, Jaret Patterson and Elijah Dotson to handle backfield work versus Seattle on Saturday. Dobbins' next chance to see exhibition action will be Aug. 17 against the Rams.

  • Gus Edwards RB | LAC

Chargers' Gus Edwards: Not slated to face Seahawks

Edwards is not in line to play in Saturday's preseason opener against the Seahawks, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.

Also not on track to see action Saturday, per Popper, is J.K. Dobbins, who is listed along with Edwards as a co-starter on the Chargers' unofficial depth chart. With the top duo not slated to log snaps, Kimani Vidal, Isaiah Spiller, Jaret Patterson and Elijah Dotson are available to handle backfield work versus Seattle.

  • Packers' MarShawn Lloyd: Picks up hamstring injury

Lloyd suffered a hamstring injury during Saturday's preseason game in Cleveland.

Lloyd was the fourth Packers running back to get a touch in the team's exhibition opener behind Josh Jacobs, AJ Dillon and Emanuel Wilson. Prior to his departure in the third quarter, Lloyd had one carry for eight yards and caught his only target for one yard. If he's unable to return Saturday, his next chance for game action will arrive Sunday, Aug., 18 at Denver.

  • Ray Davis RB | BUF

Bills' Ray Davis: Second RB into preseason opener

Davis rushed five times for two yards and caught three of four targets for 19 yards in Saturday's 33-6 preseason loss to the Bears.

Davis was the second running back in the game for Buffalo after James Cook got the start. Cook and Josh Allen subbed out at the end of the first quarter, but the rest of the starters remained in the game as Davis and Mitch Trubisky checked in. Davis didn't find much running room but showcased some nice pass-catching ability. The rookie fourth-round pick out of Kentucky is competing with Ty Johnson (hamstring) for the backup role behind Cook. Johnson didn't suit up against the Bears but could be ready to return for next Saturday's preseason game against the Steelers.

  • James Cook RB | BUF

Bills' James Cook: Bottled up in preseason start

Cook rushed four times for two yards and wasn't targeted in Saturday's 33-6 preseason loss to the Bears.

Cook played the entire first quarter alongside Josh Allen before both checked out of the game to begin the second quarter, replaced by Ray Davis and Mitch Trubisky, respectively. While Cook failed to find running room in this one, his breakout 1,122-rushing yard 2023 regular season has earned the 24-year-old running back some breathing room atop the depth chart. The Bills will travel to Pittsburgh for their next preseason game next Saturday.

  • Khalil Herbert RB | NYJ

Bears' Khalil Herbert: Gets nine carries Saturday

Herbert rushed nine times for 31 yards and wasn't targeted in Saturday's 33-6 preseason win over the Bills.

D'Andre Swift got two of the first three touches among Chicago's running backs and took a screen pass 42 yards before ceding the next eight touches to Herbert while the Bears' starters were in the game. Roschon Johnson didn't play against Buffalo after starting the Hall of Fame Game last week, so it remains unclear where Herbert stands relative to Johnson in a backfield that will likely be led by Swift but have room left over for at least one more meaningful contributor. Herbert will look to bolster his case for regular-season playing time in next Saturday's preseason game against the Bengals.
