Sutter announced his retirement from the NHL on Sunday, Jason Gregor of Sports 1440 Edmonton reports. Sutter as selected 11th overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Hurricanes. He spent 13 years with Carolina, Pittsburgh and Vancouver, tallying 152 goals and 289 points in 770 career games. The 34-year-old hasn't played since the 2020-21 campaign but was attempting a comeback in training camp with Edmonton.

Sutter signed a professional tryout agreement with the Oilers on Wednesday, per CapFriendly. Sutter has missed the last two seasons while recovering from long-term symptoms of COVID-19. The 34-year-old will now look to win a bottom-six job as a defensive center while training with the Oilers' during camp in September. The long layoff and the role he could see if he makes the team are both factors that will likely keep Sutter from reaching fantasy relevance if he's able to resume his career.

Sutter (COVID-19) remains sidelined with long-haul symptoms of the virus that don't allow him to train, Ben Kuzma of The Province reports. Sutter, an unrestricted free agent following the expiration of his contract with the Canucks, remains unable to do cardio exercises for more than a short period. His long-haul symptoms include difficulty breathing when he works outs, He missed all of the 2021-22 season, and without any progress in his treatment and a return to normal activity, the center's career will remain on pause. Sutter has 152 goals and 137 assists in 770 games, but it's unclear if he'll continue to pursue a playing career or eventually decide to retire.

Sutter is facing an extended absence as a result of long-haul COVID-19 symptoms, Brendan Batchelor of Sportsnet 650 reports. At this point, it may be fair to wonder if Sutter will be able to play at all this season due to his lingering COVID-19 symptoms. The 32-year-old center will no doubt be placed on long-term injured reserve to start the season while Nicolas Petan figures to have the inside track to a third-line center spot without Sutter available.

Sutter is still suffering from fatigue and won't be ready for the start of the regular season, Ben Kuzma of The Vancouver Province reports. Sutter has yet to report to training camp and evidently isn't particularly close to being ready to join his teammates. With Sutter out indefinitely, Justin Dowling may get the first crack at centering the Canucks' fourth line once the regular season gets underway.
