NHL Player News

  • Nikolaj Ehlers LW | CAR

Hurricanes' Nikolaj Ehlers: Two points in shootout loss

Ehlers scored a power-play goal and added an even-strength assist in Monday's 3-2 shootout loss to the Flyers.

Both points came in the first period as Carolina grabbed an early 2-0 lead that eventually slipped away. The goal was Ehlers' 25th of the season, the sixth time in his career he's reached that mark, and it was also the 250th of his NHL career. The veteran winger has also hit 70 points on the season for the very first time.

  • Hurricanes' Brandon Bussi: Downed by Philly in shootout

Bussi turned aside 21 shots in regulation and overtime and three of four shootout attempts in Monday's 3-2 loss to the Flyers.

Carolina grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first period, only for Philly to strike back with two tallies in the second. Bussi and Dan Vladar then shut down all the offense the rest of the way, until Tyson Foerster finally got a shot past the Hurricanes netminder in the fourth round of the shootout. Bussi hasn't taken a regulation loss since March 17, going 5-0-1 over his last six starts, but his 2.79 GAA and .869 save percentage during that time haven't exactly locked him into the No. 1 job in the crease for the team's postseason run.

  • Cole Reinhardt LW | FLA

Panthers' Cole Reinhardt: Two goals, including GWG

Reinhardt scored two goals, one the game-winner, in Monday's 3-2 victory over the Rangers.

The 26-year-old winger opened and closed the scoring on the night, banging home a rebound midway through the first period before ripping a one-timer past Jonathan Quick late in the third. Reinhardt has taken on a bigger offensive role down the stretch with most of Florida's stars shut down, finding the back of the net in each of his last three games, but on the season, he's produced just eight goals and 13 points in 58 contests while primarily handling a bottom-six role for the Golden Knights and Panthers.

  • Panthers' Daniil Tarasov: Collects win Monday

Tarasov stopped 24 shots in Monday's 3-2 win over the Rangers.

The Panthers staked Tarasov to an early 2-0 lead, and while he eventually let it slip away, Cole Reinhardt bailed him out with a game-winner late in the third period. The 27-year-old Tarasov has taken over No. 1 duties from Sergei Bobrovsky in the Florida crease as the team plays out the string on the season, starting four of the last five games and going 2-1-1 with a 2.94 GAA and .880 save percentage. However, Bobrovsky seems likely to get the nod for the season finale Wednesday, at home against the Red Wings, in what could be his final game as a Panther.

  • Rangers' Jonathan Quick: Falls to Florida in final start

Quick made 14 saves in Monday's 3-2 loss to the Panthers.

In what was his final NHL start after Quick announced that he'll be retiring after the season, the 40-year-old netminder nearly took the game to overtime, but Cole Reinhardt ripped a one-timer past him with less than two minutes left in regulation to break a 2-2 tie. Quick wraps up his 19th season with a 6-17-2 record, a 3.09 GAA and an .891 save percentage, and he's got a solid Hall of Fame case -- he's the winningest American-born goalie in NHL history with 410 wins, and his trophy case includes two Jennings Trophies and two Stanley Cup rings.

  • Maple Leafs' Artur Akhtyamov: Sitting duck behind struggling team

Akhtyamov made 26 saves on 32 shots in a 6-5 loss to Dallas on Monday.

Akhtyamov tried, but the team in front of him has played such bad hockey in the last few months that the young netminder had no chance. The guy was a sitting duck behind the Eastern Conference's worst and NHL's fourth-worst goal differentials (minus-44). Vancouver (minus-96), Chicago (minus-65) and Calgary (minus-47) are worse. Akhtyamov needs to be avoided.

  • Matthew Knies LW | TOR

Maple Leafs' Matthew Knies: Ending season with whimper

Knies put up two assists Monday in a 6-5 loss to Dallas.

Knies had gone three games without a point, and aside from a four-point outburst a week ago, he had just five points (three goals, two assists) in his previous 12 games dating back to March 17. Knies is a franchise cornerstone, but he doesn't have the ability to lift the team into success. Overall, he has 66 points (23 goals, 43 assists) and 139 shots in 78 games this year.

  • Maple Leafs' Jacob Quillan: First NHL goal in loss

Quillan scored a goal Monday in a 6-5 loss to Dallas.

It was his first NHL goal. The undrafted 24-year-old Quillan has played in 22 games this season. He has one goal, one assist and 14 shots while averaging 10:09 of ice time. Quillan also 12 goals and 21 assists in 38 games with AHL Toronto this season.

  • John Tavares C | TOR

Maple Leafs' John Tavares: Ninth 70-plus point season

Tavares scored a power-play goal in a 6-5 loss to Dallas on Monday.

Tavares cleaned up the crease with those silky mitts -- the guy knows how to snipe. He is on a three-game, three-point streak (one goal, two assists), and he has 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) in his last 12 games. Tavares has nine 70-plus seasons in his illustrious career. This year, he tallied 31 goals, 40 assists and 192 shots in 81 contests.

  • Maple Leafs' William Nylander: Five points in last two games

Nylander had a goal and two assists in a 6-5 loss to Dallas on Monday.

Nylander has five points, including three goals, in his last two games. The talented winger has 78 points, including 29 goals, in just 64 games. To put that in perspective, Nylander's 1.22 points-per-game ties him with opponent Mikko Rantanen's pace and is better than Jason Robertson's 1.19. Robertson has 96 points in 81 games. A full season would have seen Nylander deliver his first 100-point campaign.
