Trades for veteran players business as usual for Yankees

The Yankees' trade for Ichiro Suzuki is the latest in a long list of mid-season trades that brought veteran players to New York.

After the Yankees traded for Ichiro Suzuki on Monday, shortstop Derek Jeter noted that trading for a veteran is something the Yankees have always done since he joined the team in 1996 when the Yankees added Cecil Fielder.

Fielder hit 13 home runs in 53 regular-season games for the Yankees that season, while knocking in 14 runs and hitting three home runs in playoffs as New York topped the Braves in the World Series. If Suzuki fits in as well, plenty of Yankees fans will be happy.

But as Jeter noted, adding a veteran during the season has been a common practice as the team has reached the playoffs in 16 of the last 17 seasons, winning five World Series.
