Mets' Juan Soto: Working as DH on Thursday
Soto (back) will serve as the Mets' designated hitter and bat third Thursday against the Cubs.
Back tightness prevented Soto from playing in either game of Wednesday's doubleheader, and although the Mets are still holding off on returning him to the field, the fact that he's been cleared to work as the DH is an encouraging sign that the injury isn't bothering him too much. Soto was enjoying a hot streak at the plate before getting hurt, slashing .395/.509/.744 with four homers, eight RBI, eight runs and a 10:4 BB:K across his last 13 games.

Mets' Juan Soto: Sitting out Game 2 of twin bill
Soto (back) is out of the lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Cubs.
Soto will wind up sitting out both ends of the twin bill after exiting Tuesday's loss 9-6 loss due left side back tightness. Earlier Wednesday, manager Carlos Mendoza told Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com that a trip to the injured list hasn't been ruled out for Soto, though the Mets look like they'll wait at least one more day to make a decision on that front. Carson Benge will cover left field for the nightcap while Soto remains on the bench.

Mets' Juan Soto: Sitting out first game of twin bill
Soto (back) is not in the lineup for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Cubs.
Soto had to leave Tuesday's game against the Cubs due to left side back tightness, so it's not a surprise he's sitting for the first game of a double dip. He is considered day-to-day. MJ Melendez is grabbing a start in left field in Soto's place.

Mets' Juan Soto: Stint on IL not ruled out
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday that Soto (back) is still being evaluated and it's possible the outfielder could need a stint on the injured list, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports.
Soto was forced to depart Tuesday's game versus the Cubs with tightness in the left side of his back, and he is not in the lineup for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader. A decision on a possible trip to the IL for Soto is expected to be made later Wednesday.

Mets' Juan Soto: Deemed day-to-day
Manager Carlos Mendoza said after Tuesday's game against the Cubs that Soto (back) is considered day-to-day, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports.
Mendoza said that Soto's back locked up on him during the game, which had an impact on his ability to throw and swing. The fact that the team has labeled him as day-to-day bodes well for his chances of avoiding the injured list, though the 27-year-old star could still sit out a game or two as a precaution. MJ Melendez and Eric Wagaman would be candidates to start in the outfield during any games Soto might miss.

The 27-year-old went 0-for-2 in his two at-bats, and more information on his status will likely be provided in the near future. In the meantime, Jared Young has shifted to left field while Mark Vientos has now entered the lineup at first base.
