Leiter underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove a loose body from his right ankle region Tuesday and should be considered out indefinitely, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
Leiter is expected back before the end of the season but is without an official recovery timeline, so it's safe to assume he'll be sidelined for the foreseeable future. The right-hander landed on the injured list over the weekend due to a posterior impingement in his right ankle, which he apparently has been pitching through for most of the campaign.

While Leiter hasn't been forced to miss any turns through the rotation as a result of the ankle injury, he's been pitching through the issue for most of the season, and his conditioned worsened when he slipped on the field during an April 22 start, per Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News. Pitching through the ankle concern could be a factor in why the 26-year-old righty hasn't taken the step forward this season that both the Rangers and fantasy managers were counting on, as he's turned in a 5.29 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 80 innings over his first 15 starts. Texas recalled Jose Corniell from Triple-A Round Rock to take over Leiter's spot on the 26-man active roster, but it's not immediately clear who will replace Leiter in the rotation.

The Twins got to Leiter early Thursday, scoring four runs in the first inning, capped by a Brooks Lee three-run blast. He'd give up another two runs on a Trevor Larnach homer in the fourth. It's been a tough stretch of late for Leiter, who's lost his last three starts while giving up 15 earned runs across 13.2 innings. Leiter entered Saturday with back-to-back victories, including a 10-strikeout performance over 5.2 scoreless innings his previous time out. Leiter's only mistake in his outing was the solo homer he gave up to Isaac Paredes in the third inning. It's only two starts, but Leiter seems to be turning things around after a tough stretch that saw him allow 21 runs (20 earned) on 27 innings across five starts between April 11 and May 3. Leiter has bounced back and has allowed just one run on 11.2 frames in his last two starts. Leiter will try to keep it rolling in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled for next week against the Rockies on the road.

All four runs Leiter gave up came across the third and fourth innings, and all four were courtesy of the long ball. It was the first time the right-hander gave up more than two homers in a game this season, and it snapped a string of two straight homerless outings by Leiter. He did tie a season high by completing six frames, but Leiter has now given up at least three earned runs in four straight starts. He'll carry an unhappy 5.17 ERA into his next start, which lines up to be a road matchup against the Tigers.
Leiter (ankle) is scheduled to start Monday's game against the Yankees.
