Angels' Nolan Schanuel: Beginning rehab assignment
Schanuel (ankle) will begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga on Friday.
Schanuel was placed on the 10-day injured list with left ankle inflammation May 27 and hasn't played since May 23. Prior to going down with the injury, Schanuel was slashing .262/.313/.387 with four home runs, 24 RBI, 18 runs scored and a 13:33 BB:K across 208 plate appearances. Schanuel's 6.3 percent walk rate is well below his 10.6 percent career average. Lacking power, Schanuel also owns a career-high 14.3 percent infield flyball rate this season.

Angels' Nolan Schanuel: Doing some drills
Schanuel (ankle) has started to run, take grounders and has done shuffling drills, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
After landing on the IL on Wednesday, Schanuel has begun participating in his first drills since the injury took place. The 24-year-old has not begun running at full intensity quite yet, but he felt fine at the pace he was going at Monday. The next step in the recovery process for Schanuel is hitting.

Schanuel's ankle has been bothering him off and on since early April, but it flared up on him recently, leading to a trip to the 10-day injured list. The first baseman isn't sure at this point how long he might be sidelined, but it appears likely to be longer than a minimum absence. Vaughn Grissom is filling in at first base for the Angels while Schanuel recovers.

Schanuel drove in a run on a double in the bottom of the fifth inning -- RBI No. 24 for the first baseman this season -- but he appeared to pull up while jogging into second base. Schanuel was removed from Saturday's game against the Rangers after six innings with an apparent injury, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
Fletcher points out that Schanuel appeared to pull up while running into second base on his RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning, indicating some sort of lower-body issue. Schanuel stayed in the game initially but was then replaced at first base by Vaughn Grissom before the top of the seventh.

Schanuel went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in an extra-inning loss to the Athletics on Thursday.
Schanuel helped the Angels get off to a promising beginning with a two-run homer to right field in the first inning. However, that ended up being the team's only runs -- and the first baseman's only hit -- in the contest. Schanuel surprised when he went deep twice in his first three games of the campaign, but he's since hit just two long balls over 44 contests, with Thursday's home run snapping a 23-game homerless stretch. He ranks in the bottom 10 percent leaguewide in barrel rate and bat speed, so there's no reason to believe he'll suddenly morph into a power hitter.

Schanuel went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Tuesday's 5-2 loss to the White Sox.
Schanuel has now posted back-to-back multi-hit games against Chicago with a pair of doubles across nine plate appearances. The first baseman has hit safely in 14 of 22 games this month and is slashing .241/.304/.375 with three homers, 19 RBI, 10 runs scored and a 10:19 BB:K across 125 plate appearances on the season. Schanuel doesn't hit the ball hard or possess much power, but he doesn't chase pitches out of the zone or strike out often.

Schanuel's three hits were a season high, and it's just his fourth multi-hit effort of the year. The first baseman is regarded for his contact skills, so this has been an unusually quiet start to the campaign for him. He's batting .227 with a .631 OPS, two home runs, 12 RBI, five runs scored, two doubles and no stolen bases over 18 games. Schanuel matched a season high in RBI on Sunday, drawing multiple walks for the third time this year as well. The first baseman has hit third in the lineup in 12 of his first 14 appearances, so he should have plenty of RBI chances batting behind Zach Neto and Mike Trout going forward.
