Astros' Jeremy Pena: Cracks first homer of season
Pena went 1-for-3 with a solo home run during Saturday's 2-1 win over the Mets.
Pena got the scoring started in the fifth inning when he took Griffin Canning deep for a 363-foot solo homer to left field. Pena is looking to build off a solid 2024 campaign in which he slashed .266/.308/.394 with 20 stolen bases, 15 home runs and 70 RBI across 650 plate appearances. Pena and the Astros will enjoy the off-day Sunday before starting up a three-game home series against the Giants on Monday.

Astros' Josh Hader: More efficient in second save
Hader walked one batter in a scoreless ninth inning Saturday to record the save in a 2-1 win over the Mets.
Hader was shaky in his first save opportunity Opening Day, and he got off on the wrong foot Saturday when he walked Juan Soto on six pitches. Hader was able to steady himself by getting Pete Alonso to pop out on the first pitch, and the southpaw closer was able to cruise through the final two batters to earn his second save of the season. Hader is already on track to log a fifth consecutive 30-save season, and he'll look to earn his third of the year during the upcoming three-game home series against the Giants starting Monday.

Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Fans five in quality start
Arrighetti (1-0) got the win Saturday against the Mets, allowing one run on one hit and two walks while striking out five across six innings.
Arrighetti found himself in trouble with two baserunners in the first inning, but he got out unscathed after striking out Mark Vientos. Arrighetti proceeded to retire the next 12 batters and held a 1-0 lead heading into the six inning. He gave up his lone run when he fielded a groundball from Juan Soto and casually tossed it to first base, which allowed Jose Siri to dash to home plate and barely beat out the tag. It was the only blemish in what was a strong start for Arrighetti, who is tentatively slated to start against the Twins on the road next week.

Astros' Cam Smith: Sitting out Saturday
Smith is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Mets, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Smith started his big-league career 1-for-1 but now sits at 1-for-5 with two walks through his first two games. He'll take a seat for Saturday's series finale, opening up right field for Zach Dezenzo.

Astros' Jake Meyers: Riding pine Saturday
Meyers isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game versus the Mets, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Meyers will take a seat Saturday after going 0-for-3 with three strikeouts in Friday's loss. Chas McCormick will fill the open spot in center field and bat ninth.

Astros' Brendan Rodgers: Getting Saturday off
Rodgers isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Mets, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Rodgers is 0-for-6 with a walk and two strikeouts through two games this season. The Astros will give him a chance to regroup Saturday while Mauricio Dubon starts at the keystone and bats eighth.

Astros' Yainer Diaz: Idle Saturday

Astros' Hunter Brown: Fans seven during loss
Brown (0-1) was saddled with the loss Friday against the Mets, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out seven batters over six innings.
Brown got off to a great start by striking out Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto during the first two at-bats of the game. However, three consecutive hits from the Mets to begin the second frame put Houston in a 2-0 hole, and Soto's third-inning solo blast gave New York all the insurance it would need. Brown performed well enough to earn a quality start during his first appearance of the new campaign, but it's hard to take home a win when your offense only provides one run of support. He'll look for a better result next week when the Astros travel to Minnesota.

Astros' Mauricio Dubon: Out of lineup again Friday
Dubon is not in the lineup for Friday's tilt against the Mets, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.
All signs had pointed to Dubon opening the season as the Astros' starting second baseman, but he's now been on the bench in favor of Brendan Rodgers for each of the first two games. Dubon should still play plenty in a utility role, but it's clear that Rodgers is higher than him in the second base pecking order right now.

Astros' Christian Walker: First hit for Houston
Walker went 1-for-4 with a run scored in Thursday's game against the Mets.
Walker dealt with an oblique issue for most of spring training, but he was able to return for Opening Day. He was slotted into the cleanup spot and delivered a one-out single in the third inning to continue a key rally for the Astros. Walker should be a threat for 30 home runs while putting up strong counting stats in his first season in Houston.

Astros' Cam Smith: First career hit Opening Day
Smith went 1-for-3 with a single during Thursday's 3-1 win over the Mets.
The 22-year-old Smith earned a spot on the Astros' Opening Day roster after a strong spring and started in right field Thursday. Batting seventh in his MLB debut, he wasted no time registering the first hit of his big-league career, delivering the first pitch of his first at-bat through the right side of the infield during the second inning. The 2024 first-round pick made it to the majors with just 32 minor-league games under his belt, but he's now getting a chance as Houston's primary right fielder.

Astros' Framber Valdez: Seven shutout frames on Opening Day
Valdez (1-0) picked up the win Thursday against the Mets, striking out four and giving up four hits and two walks across seven scoreless frames.
Valdez got off to a rocky start by allowing one hit and one walk in the first frame, but he managed to escape unscathed and didn't face much resistance over the following six innings. The Astros' shutout was broken in the ninth inning when Josh Hader gave up a sacrifice fly to Francisco Lindor, but the southpaw reliever managed to punch out Juan Soto for the save to give Valdez the Opening Day victory. It's a strong start to the 2025 season for Valdez after posting career bests in 2024 in ERA (2.91) and WHIP (1.11) across 176.1 regular-season frames. He's tentatively slated to face off against the Giants at home next week.

Astros' Josh Hader: Escapes with Opening Day save
Hader earned the save Thursday after giving up one run on two hits and one walk in the ninth inning to close out a 3-1 win against the Mets. He struck out two.
Entering the ninth inning up three runs, Hader found himself in immediate trouble after giving up back-to-back singles before allowing a walk to load up the bases. He steadied himself by punching out Hayden Senger, and after giving up a sacrifice fly to Francisco Lindor, Hader managed to close things out by striking out Juan Soto. It took Hader 35 pitches to come away with the Opening Day save, which will affect his availability out of the bullpen Friday and potentially Saturday.

The Astros placed France (shoulder) on the 60-day injured list Thursday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

The Astros placed Whitley (knee) on the 15-day injured list Thursday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
