  • Jalen Virgil: Cut loose by Buffalo

The Bills waived Virgil on Saturday. Buffalo needed to make room on the active roster with defensive players Dawuane Smoot (wrist) and Baylon Spector (calf) being activated off injured reserve, and Virgil was one of the cuts. The 26-year-old appeared in six games with the Bills this season but didn't see a passing target. Virgil logged 36 snaps on offense and 68 on special teams.

Virgil went without a target while taking the field for one of the Bills' 60 snaps on offense in Sunday's 44-42 loss to the Rams. • Jalen Virgil: Back with practice squad

Virgil reverted to the Bills' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction log. The wide receiver failed to produce any stats while playing 11 of the team's 76 offensive snaps and 10 snaps on special teams. • Jalen Virgil: Catches on with Bills' taxi squad

Buffalo signed Virgil to its practice squad Wednesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Virgil missed the entire 2023 season due to a torn meniscus. He entered training camp fully healthy, but he was unable to make the Broncos' 53-man roster after posting just one catch (on four targets) for 13 yards across Denver's three preseason games. Virgil did get some reps as a kick returner during the preseason -- he turned three kick returns into 88 yards against the Colts on Aug. 11 -- and he could get called up to the Bills' active roster at some point during the season to fill that role if needed.

Virgil is fully recovered from surgery to repair a torn meniscus suffered in the Broncos' second preseason game last year and which forced him to miss the 2023 campaign, Chris Tomasson of The Denver Gazette reports. Virgil had to spend the entirety of last season on IR after a 2022 rookie campaign that saw him appear in nine games and record two catches on five targets for 75 yards, while also seeing work in the return game on special teams. According to Tomasson, the 25-year-old is eagerly awaiting spring drills in April, where he'll work to start carving out a regular role for himself in Denver.
